Restoration / Re: Overspray on underside of Hood
« on: October 10, 2008, 08:41:41 PM »
The black dip-primed hood, fenders, and header panel were mounted on a conveyor buck in car position with about a 1" gap between the panels when they were sprayed with body color; the outer edges of the vertical weld flange on the hood got full coverage, but very little or no body color normally showed on the inboard side of the hood flange.

Thanks John

Hi All,

The underside of my hood has a very small amount of Gold oversray on it around the cowl and upeer side edges. Was this a typical from the factory?

Originality / Re: NAT MFG marking on fender ???

Looks like "Pcs" under the "Nat". That reinforcement may have been the top piece in a container, with the supplier and the number of pieces noted on it. The fender outer "skin" came from Bristol Road Stamping, but that long inner reinforcement was welded to the fender "skin" at the car assembly plant (see the '68 Assembly Manual, UPC 11-13, sheet A3).

I have "GR" written on the inside of my lower fender extensions. My car is an Olympic Gold RS Z/28. Any idea what this means? I would post a picture but the file is to large.

Thanks 68Z. I am just going to put them on and drive it. I will see what happens. I will only drive the car around 1500 miles a year anyway.

Depends on how much you'll drive it.
If it's a show car, you can reuse them. If you're going to drive it, paint some Koni's grey and be done with it. The repros won't hold up to regular driving.....

I'd be interested in a picture of the shock date stamps if you get a chance... :)

Kurt here is a pic witth the date code. If you want a larger file that you can zoom in on let me know and I will email you a picture.

Here are some markings off my 69 Z/28 fender.

Anybody know how to make a picture file smaller?

My car has approx 36K miles on it and I would like to use my original front shocks. Is this being unrealistic? Are they just to old? Is there a way to test them prior to installing on the car? I would like to find new rubber for the bottom of the shocks and install that prior to finishing the project. I can use the repro sprirals but want to use as many original parts as possible.

I soaked the front shocks in evaporust and painted them. Here are the pics.

One source is AMK Products.  Their fastener catalog is on line.  Many good pictures of the various NOS / OEM fasteners that they have in stock.

Rich thanks, you are right this is a good source.

Is there a written description or pictures of the fasteners used to assemble a 69 Camaro. I know the AIM has the part number listed but I need a resource to call on in case I have questions about what bolt goes where when it is time to reassemble. I have my fasteners labled in seperate plastic bags but was just looking for one more resource.

Thanks

Jerry,

Thanks for the information. That is how mine were before I took them off just wanted to confirm they were on correct the first time.

I do have your fact book for  69 Z/28's. Is this the same book you are talking about?

Thanks,

Can someone confirm for me which engine lifting bracket/hook goes on the front of the motor. There is one that is a bit larger than the other, and one that has a "cut" out of one corner. I dont know any other way to describe it.

Thanks

Restoration / Re: Leaf Springs

Since it's new paint, I'd remove it with lacquer thinner or some similiar solvent. The paint should just melt off. Sandblasting will get grit in between the leafs and make a royal mess, and it will leave a clean, but rough surface. If they're rust-free under the paint you can use Cosmoline to stop any surface rust from forming on the bare metal. A good alternative is to paint them with cast-iron gray paint. Not 100% original, but the springs look nice and they won't rust. My 2 cents and good luck!

I tried Lacquer Thinner right when I got home. The paint started to come off but it did not come off easily...still alot on them and not coming off easily. The springs are dis-assembled.

I had my leaf springs re-arched and went to pick them up and the guy had painted them. Great!!!!

I am considering having the black paint sandblasted off. Has anyone done this before? I am not sure what the sandblasted finish will look like when complete. I am trying to restore my car back to 100% original and want to avoid messing up my springs. The springs did have some rust on them prior to re-arching.

Thanks

Perhaps the vendors pictures that I was looking at were only displaying drum brake options.

I will try Master Brake.

Thank you for the responses.
