Originality / Letters in Fender extensions
« on: October 20, 2008, 10:34:28 AM »
Can someone tell me what this "GR" means inside my fender extensions. It does not mean Green. My car is Olympic Gold and I spoke to another RS Z/28 owner whose car was built one week later than mine and he too hat this written inside his fender extension. His car was Phantom Green though. Perhaps this like he "XO" on the inside of the fender helps tell the line worker something about the assemble of the car? If some can tell me what this means that would be great.

Thanks

« on: October 09, 2008, 10:38:02 AM »
Hi All,

The underside of my hood has a very small amount of Gold oversray on it around the cowl and upeer side edges. Was this a typical from the factory?

Originality / Original shocks off my 69 Z/28
« on: October 02, 2008, 01:25:42 AM »
My car has approx 36K miles on it and I would like to use my original front shocks. Is this being unrealistic? Are they just to old? Is there a way to test them prior to installing on the car? I would like to find new rubber for the bottom of the shocks and install that prior to finishing the project. I can use the repro sprirals but want to use as many original parts as possible.

I soaked the front shocks in evaporust and painted them. Here are the pics.

Originality / Fastener description or pictures
« on: August 27, 2008, 04:34:49 PM »
Is there a written description or pictures of the fasteners used to assemble a 69 Camaro. I know the AIM has the part number listed but I need a resource to call on in case I have questions about what bolt goes where when it is time to reassemble. I have my fasteners labled in seperate plastic bags but was just looking for one more resource.

Thanks

Originality / Lifting Hooks
« on: August 23, 2008, 11:03:42 PM »
Can someone confirm for me which engine lifting bracket/hook goes on the front of the motor. There is one that is a bit larger than the other, and one that has a "cut" out of one corner. I dont know any other way to describe it.

Thanks

Restoration / Leaf Springs
« on: August 15, 2008, 02:03:04 AM »
I had my leaf springs re-arched and went to pick them up and the guy had painted them. Great!!!!

I am considering having the black paint sandblasted off. Has anyone done this before? I am not sure what the sandblasted finish will look like when complete. I am trying to restore my car back to 100% original and want to avoid messing up my springs. The springs did have some rust on them prior to re-arching.

Thanks

Restoration / Front Disc brake lines
« on: August 11, 2008, 01:32:11 AM »
I am in the middle of restoring my car and just finsihed restoring the front brake calipers. The car has 36K miles on it and the original front and rear brake lines were on the car. The front lines seem to be ok but the rear lines are shot. I started looking at what the usual after market shops had to offer for front brake lines and noticed the lines are not even close to the originals. The bracket to hold the line to the sub frame is not even on the brake line. Can someone suggest a supplier for oriiginal style brake lines or should I just suck it up and use 39 year old front brake lines provided they dont leak? The lines look good.

Restoration / Factory markings
« on: August 05, 2008, 02:42:20 AM »
Is there a source that I can go to and get (look at) the suspension factory markings that generally came on the car? I know where the suspension paint went on my car I took pictures before the resto. Really looking for the chaulk marks.

thanks

Restoration / Sand blast or acid dip?
« on: July 24, 2008, 02:11:26 AM »
I am at a cross road with my restoration. I need to either sand blast or acid dip my sub frame, rear end, upper and lower control arms. Maybe just glass bead my control arms. Does any one have any experience with acid dipping these parts? The cost to acid dip all parts is around $350 vs. $150 for the sand blasting. The reason to acid dip is to get the surface rust from inside the sub frame out. The parts are in pretty good shape over all.

Thanks for the feedback.

Restoration / 69 Heater control knobs
« on: May 29, 2008, 11:52:13 AM »
I removed my switch assembly and during he process mildly scratched the plastic faceplate. I am considering replacing the plastic faceplate but to do so requires removing the small knobs at the end of the contol levers. I remember as a high school kid driving these cars that when those knobs fell off they were very hard to re install and stay installed. The knobs are on really secure now so my question is risk breaking the factory install of the knobs to replace a mildly scratched face plate or leave well enough alone?

Restoration / Paint on floor pans
« on: May 15, 2008, 09:37:10 PM »
I have a Norwood 69 Z Olympic Gold RS car that is at the painter now, and I need to confirm or get your comments on the following:

Background info:

1. Currently, there is surface rust on the underside of the car, but I can see gray primer in various areas that had oil etc.  had leaked on the underside of the car.
2. I understand that some cars came from the factory with gray primer as my car has on the underside and others were painted black. I see many cars that have been restored painted black on the underside, but not many with the gray primer.

Questions:

Is it correct for the underside to have the gray primer then the body color overspray then the black overspray due to the RS option?
A few months back there was a Lemans Blue RS Z car that was a high point car that had a gray primer underside with the overspray as I have explained. If anyone remembers that car and discussion was that car done right?

Thanks

Restoration / sub frame painting
« on: May 07, 2008, 11:39:27 AM »
Was the sub frame painted prior to installation? Was the fuel line on the car prior to sub frame painting? I just took my fuel line loose last night and the sub frame under the fuel line bracket is pretty much unpainted.

Thank you,

L Shaw

Restoration / kick panel cables
« on: April 22, 2008, 10:31:55 AM »
The cables for the astro ventilation (upper vents) in my 69 Z has broken plastic on the outside of the cable. Plastic is all there just split clean. Cable is fine just the hard plastic has dry rotted I guess. I was considering trying to fix the cables. Any ideas on how to glue or adher the hard plastic together so when you push the knob in on the kick panel the cable will push through the plastic.

Originality / White wire under dash
« on: April 21, 2008, 11:59:30 PM »
I am taking my car apart so I can get it painted. While removing the interior/dash noticed a white wire that was strung from one end of the dash to another. The wire appears to be for the courtesy lights, but my car did not come with courtesy lights. Did the factory put this wire in regardless of the option? BTW my car has not been taken apart previously....sure does not look like it anyway...lots of factory suff still in place.

Thanks
