General Discussion / Bittersweet
« on: February 18, 2023, 09:18:24 PM »
After 18 years of ownership I am selling my 69 Z28 RS. I have so enjoyed the car over these years. This one and a 69 L78 Chevelle will be sold. The Z will be sold at RK Motors in Charlotte. The Chevelle is not ready to be sold yet so not sure where it will be sold.
I want to thank all the guys on this site that have helped me with my car. I really enjoyed it. I am not closing the door on my Camaro ownership may just pivot to a 67 SSRS convertible or another 69 Convertible.

Thanks again

Lawrence

Restoration / 69 RS Actuators
« on: July 01, 2020, 07:25:02 PM »
Has anyone had to shorten the actuator shaft slightly to get the door to close correctly? Both of my headlight doors were perfect prior to taking the car apart and painting it. Now one door is slightly open beyond acceptable to me. I have adjusted the door cover, the bracket the holds the back of the actuator etc. The actuators that I put in the car 11 years ago! Were OER. This has been something that has always bugged me but have lived with it. Now going to take it to the next step and fix it perfect if I can.

Maintenance / 69 Z Manual steering
« on: June 05, 2020, 01:43:12 AM »
So I have had my car 15 years and always disliked the slack in the steering. I had the manual box rebuilt by Lares. Put back it back in and saw no improvement. Took it back out sent it back and they agreed they had made a mistake on the rebuild. Got it back re-installed and only mildly better than before. I am thinking that I may have another issue. I have installed a new idler arm. The ball joints are all original the car has 44k miles. What else is there to look over. I have seriously thought about putting PS in the car to eliminate this issue and make the car more drive able but I hate not keeping it original.
As a side note I have a 69 Chevelle with a rebuilt Lares manual steering box with new front suspension and it is sloppy too. Granted the Chevelle although a real L78 car only has the non fast ratio manual box.
Any suggestions are appreciated.
PS nice to be back on the board...has been awhile.

Maintenance / Temp sending unit for a 69
« on: April 26, 2019, 10:30:15 AM »
I have tried two different units with the same incorrect reading. Not sure if my gauge is out of calibration or what? I have grounded the gauge and it goes all the way to H. My gauge needle rests way below C when cold and rises slightly past the first mark, thermostat opens and it then settles back down to the first mark on the gauge. I have had two other 69's with gauges and as I recall the needle would rest at the first mark when cold not positive. I am using NAPA part number TS 6469 at the moment. If someone has another part number maybe with a different resistance let me know.

Thanks

Did the L78 in 69 come with engine lift hooks? If so were they painted silver like the intake or were they orange?

Thanks guys

Maintenance / Coil Issues
« on: March 10, 2018, 06:24:06 PM »
I wanted to share a problem that I had and the end result to fix. I had a misfire at 4500 rpm seemed like a lean problem. So I checked the carb, and ended up rebuilding it which was not the problem. Then changed the fuel pump which resulted in me removing the smog pump to get to the fuel pump. Still not the problem. So I changed out the old 293 coil with a Mallory coil that I have had for 24 years. Bingo bad coil. Since I did not have the correct number coil, I ordered a repo coil with the "298" embossed on the part, correct for a 69 Z28. I thought new coil should take care of the problem. Nope, same misfire at 4500 rpm. Put the old Mallory coil ran great. I thought maybe my plug wires had aged so put in good relatively new wires with the new 298 coil...misfire. So this told me the coil was bad for sure. So put the Mallory coil back in the car, and then put the crappy "correct" date coded Packard wires back on. Car runs great now. But previously I had the old 293 coil on the car with the Packard wires and the car ran fine. Just over the time has this problem surfaced. So I am wondering if I still have a problem masked by the better high output coil?

Restoration / Manual Steering Box Rebuild
« on: December 24, 2016, 01:42:25 PM »
Guys,

I had the above restored by Lares Corp. Frankly, wish I would had gone elsewhere. I had to send it back once I got it back because the box still had slop in it. Once received they called me and said there was a bushing that needed to be installed which they missed the first time. I have no problem with this. People make mistakes. They paid for the shipping etc. Got it back and it drove well until the slop returned. I was like man now what. So had a buddy over and while turning the steering wheel the top cover of the box was moving due to the fasteners being loose. I tightened them skeptical. Drove the car not many miles. Now they are lose again and tightened them up with lock tight this time. Are these bolts the style that you use them one and when removed you throw them out and install new ones? Or should I just put lock washers on the box? I don't want to do that because as I recall that is not right? Maybe the lock tight will work, but that just does not seem like a long term fix.

Thanks

Restoration / Deluxe seat covers code 712 on a 69
« on: March 02, 2016, 01:24:46 AM »
Guys,

I am thinking of replacing the original seat covers on the X66 car. They are ripped and getting worse. Which vendor do you like best? I have had good luck with Legendary but that was Mopar covers.

Thanks

Does anyone know where to get the slide clips that go on the end of the temp wire and fastens to the sending unit? Somehow mine broke.

Maintenance / BB manifold still tapping PS box
« on: November 08, 2015, 11:36:38 AM »
I put new motor mounts on my 69 L35 convertible but still have this annoying bumping of the manifold on the ps box. It only happens when the car is in reverse at certain rpms. Not a problem going down the road. I installed correct smog manifolds on the car hoping this would cure the problem. The previous manifolds were wrong and the problem worse. Still have not worked it all the way out. Any ideas?

What is the correct finish for a 69 L35 alternator fan? I understand the pulley is silver cadmium dichromate.

Restoration / Windshield washers will not turn off when wipers are on
« on: September 16, 2015, 02:36:34 AM »
I rebuilt my wiper motor, took apart my washer system cleaned it and installed an original used good motor. I also changed the switch. I am still getting the washer motor engaged when I turn the wipers on. I am not pushing the button in to engage the washer they are just squirting. Apparently there is a 12 volt signal finding its way to the washer motor. Anyone have any idea where to start to troubleshoot this?
FYI, this is on the standard non RS car.

Thanks guys

Lawrence
