Restoration / Re: What is meant by N44 versus Quick ratio

Hi Mike, I believe you have to take it apart and compare the worm gear it to the picture I posted, if I'm correct in my assumption, if the gear looks like the top one then it would be an N44, but again it would not be an "N44 box" all the manual boxes are the same.

From everything I have read and the info posted thus far, I am thinking that you are correct. That top worm gear shaft sure appears that it would definitely make the steering super quick lock to lock. As mentioned, probably a little too quick for everyday street use for sure.

I've been trying to search and help you but all I found was what you already know. N44 69 Z's pitman arm p/n 3953225 has forging #3953227 but info also states that manual steering boxes used different sector gears inside the gear housing in addition to different length pitman and steering arms. The general consensus is that most had a long pitman and short outward at 5.25 inches. Doing a search even in GM archives, I have not found part number 5678504 other than it simply stating 68/69 Z special steering. Sorry I can't be of more help. Maybe send David Pozzi a PM to see if he could elaborate. That's what I would try.

Have you visited pozziracing.com and looked at his info on Camaro steering linkage? It has tremendous info and pictures including info about N44.

I think your approach to keeping all the original drive train and parts removed is smart. No doubt you want to get rid of all the surface rust you described. You want to be proud of your girl whether she's out and about or in your garage. So I agree, do what makes you happy. You've already stated that you plan to document things as you disassemble and rebuild. Only thing I can add, is document with pictures along with notes; and document even the smallest details even if it doesn't make sense at the time. After all, it's just the matter of using a digital camera and you only have one chance to do it. Things that you remove should be labeled or marked for later reference if needed and probably stored in specifically marked containers for ease of finding. The reason I mention this is because many folks start post asking what something is, because they didn't take this approach years ago and no longer remember. It happens. And it will continue to happen. You are at the stage to be way ahead of this situation. Good luck with your build and keep us posted along with updates and pictures. You know what you want. Just my 2 cents.

Kelley, "If it is not live may as well be Ebay" That's funny. I really don't see where going out at this time is very smart or important, especially for something such as going to a auction and such. Yea, you might get a better deal with less competition, but you might get something else to go along with it. Not to mention taking it home to your family, friends. This will more than likely drive the prices down in the foreseeable future. People will more than likely start prioritizing their spending for necessities instead of their wants, desires. Who knows, this might eventually flood the market with people wanting to cash in on getting rid of their rides, which will also drive the prices down. Many possibilities.

The XLS is what I use to run in a 396/325. And I agree with Ed. Stay away from the Champion's.

I'll be out in the garage tinkering with the Camaro and listening to the oldies radio station while all the Superblob hysteria is taking place. Couldn't care less who wins.

Sounds like your getting the Camaro set up to the way you want to enjoy her. Good for you. Most often it is this type build that gets the most enjoyment from their owners. You don't have the worries of putting wear and tear plus miles on them. Actually get to go out and enjoy it for what it is. "Keep on truck'in".

I do read his post and articles. Probably the best that I have come across. And I am also very impressed with your post, comments, knowledge. I was actually leaning toward the video aspect so younger future owners could sorta get their info from the actual horses mouth so to speak, in a way that would further concrete what his and the other's opinions were on their shared knowledge base. I also realize that it would take way to many hours to even get a glimpse of what they could share. I've read books both before and after meeting the author and it sometimes help give me a different view on what they were trying to get across. Not saying, at all, that his reports or others input are difficult to follow. I guess with age, and many of us are getting there, that I just sorta would like to have captured real time down to earth video of people who are still with us who have been so instrumental to keeping this hobby alive and actually started. Actual first hand participants. A time capsule with respect to those who would be involved in such an endeavor. I realize that this will not happen and that is okay. I guess I am feeling a bit nostalgic these days.

It would be so nice if a few of the folks. such as John and others in the know, could get together and have an informal discussion video taped for the sake of prosperity. The wealth of knowledge that could be captured would be absolutely tremendous for sure.

Nice job Ed. You guys (John, etc.) never fell to share your knowledge and make it easier to understand the procedures taken to do much of the things most of us would never know. Much appreciated!
