Decoding/Numbers / Re: VIN assignment - JohnZ?

Kurt,
How would the plant labor strikes affect the above mentioned process?  Would cars have been caught in limbo and have odd body, build, and VIN numbers?  Do you know the weeks involved?
  Thank you,
  Victor

Allen.
Remove your door panels and see if there are holes filled in. (rear quarters-Front fenders also are pierced) also check if the light buckets are R/S style, check if a vacuum canister was removed, Check the light switch,
Check if the rear panel under the bumper has been filled in. 68 R/S questions are rarely answered... We middle kids need to stick together. I am no expert but 30 plus years  of 68 R/S cars has provided me with a little insight. Any help i can provide I will.
  Good luck,

Originality / 1968 R/S Molding clips style
« on: November 26, 2010, 01:38:19 AM »
Hi Guys,
Part # 3921828 retaining clips in the AIM (page 423) shows a clip that looks like the repo items from classic camaro or rick's with a green finish and two prong construction, However the clips that were I removed were four prong brown finish clips that resemble a
bug with longer "leggs" on one side like a stink bug (the moldingd are somewhat triangle shapped). There is not a revision listed in my AIM but there is no printed date either, The car is an L.A. 05C, I want to use the brown clips that fit perfectly and holds the moulding very tight. Does anybody know if these clips were original? changed at the assembly plantat some point?  and if so, where can i get six more?
The brown four prong clips are far superior to the green two prong clips. Has any one else encountered these clips on their car?
 Thank you for your time,
  Victor

Joe,
Based on thirty years of collecting what is your opinion on the basic question Did the factory install "MUNCIE" stamped
shifters through the entire 1968 production run?

 John,
If there was no design change why would they replace them? What would your opinion be for the above question?

Originality / Re: '68 Disc Brake Assembly
« on: June 30, 2010, 12:39:22 AM »
Vic,
Yes they are different, One is to repair the car and the other to put the car together. You can use the correct 14" wheels, what are you using? Two piece rotors were a early 67 thing with a hub and a matching rotor. The photo seems to indicate that you are using the wrong holes, look for holes further out on the backing plate. Look at the picture then imagine a rotor in place.... the rotor diameter is just a bit smaller than the backing plate. Try mocking the parts up with the spindle, that should help. Be sure you have all the parts and pieces that were removed in the first place. Keep us posted. Good luck.

Vic,
1968 Factory disc brake camaros (- Z/28) came with 14" wheels. The offset (wheel depth) is what is crucial.
Scour through this site and the answers to most of your questions will be here. Click on the little boxes on the home page. A chassis service manual, Fisher body service manual are great investments. If you are going to be taking it apart a Factory assembly manual is a must. Good luck.

No, those NX wheels are for 68-69 drum brakes. They will not fit the front. Google Chevy rally wheel codes.

Hi Guys,
Still hoping for more replies from 68 guys. Now a few more questions come to mind, If all the Camaro shifters were the same why did the factory replace so many under warranty? and replaced them with what? The factory will always take the cheapest way, so there should have been some kind of improvement. My car is 6,000 from the last 1968 L.A. Camaro and about 27,000 overall. Would the factory limit the amount of High-end cars produced towards the end of a model year? I would still like to read all thoughts on this subject.

Googe "BorgWarner transmision ID". Be sure to check all the numbers. Looks like you have ground grabber traction bars !

Hi guys,
Does anybody have a 68 with a M21 with a factory original shifter lever that is smooth blank chrome? I have read the CRG section but it is very general. Not many responses to the above question so i am going to termite this.
I am trying to determin if, and if so when the factory finely did give up on the 1st design. (no extra support bar - that did very little anyway) or trying take a mini poll for cars after 05C. Rare396Bronze did you yourself remove the shifter and could describe it? like color, part numbers, tags, ect.
 Thank's

Does anybody have a 1968 Camaro with a M-21 (Four speed) built after O5C (MAY) with a factory original shifter stamped with "MUNCIE"?

I am referring to a 1968 05C factory BB car. I believe sometime before the end of the 1968 production run the factory switched to a plain levered muncie shifter, possibly the warranty shifter that the dealers were already replacing the "MUNCIE" shifter with due to torque twist issues.
