Maintenance / Re: 346 Master Cylinder
« on: August 23, 2008, 06:15:48 AM »
Thanks Gents, pulled the rear seat and it was the same size as both seats supplied in the kit. So although the rear port on the master takes a larger fitting than the front port the seat diameters are the same.

Thanks Steve, actually I did read your posting before starting my thread. Did you notice if both seats were the same size or not in your master and kit? Don't want to pull out that rear seat before I know if one of the seats in the kit will fit.

Just picked up a Napa kit UP-501 and comes with 2 check valves. the seats in the kit both mic at about .435" in diameter, the front port on the master cylinder is 7/16" thread, which would seem to work with one of the seats although don't need to pull out that seat since its for front discs, the rear port however is a 1/2" thread, not sure if the .435" seat will work. +Are the seats the same on both ports or do I need to find a larger seat, .500", for the rear port?
thanks.

Thanks John, I sorta assumed, whether valid or not, that the Z28 master cylinder was intended for a JL-8, since the part number I described calls for "ALL 69 front disc Camaros except Z28".
I confirmed no check valve (RPV), by using the blunt end of a 7/64th drill bit, I should probably consider installing one before using this master cylinder.
The 69 Chasis Service Manual makes a strong emphasis on the correct secondary piston. Short of disassembling the main cylinder, is it safe to assume that I have the correct secondary piston installed? Are the aftermarket or replacement pistons marked or grooved correctly as the originals for identification?

Maintenance / 346 Master Cylinder
« on: August 19, 2008, 07:29:20 AM »
I picked up a Cardone 10-1423 Master cylinder from an Autozone about 7 years ago. It is a '346 casting with no identifiable stamp on it, i.e. US etc... It came up as a replacement for a 69 396 Camaro w/ front discs (the 69 Z28 master he pulled was a tall Bendix type).
The box says its a reman'd unit, couldn't pass on it for $14 at the time. I'm now considering installing it but noticed it doesn't seem to have the rear residual pressure valve installed.
Does anyone know if these are reproductions. Shouldn't a 396 Camaro with front discs also require the rear RPV? Why does the 69 Z28 master Cardone sells as a remanufactured unit resemble a bendix type master? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I do not want to talk about a supplier, but I had bad experience with these guys. After 2 attempts for Lee to fix it I sent it to Pro Steering (see link). I found out there was a bushing missing inside that let my box get sloppy very fast. I was not happy after removing it 3 times. Pro Steering turned it around in 1 day and it is working fine after a few months. I got the recommendation from 68Zproject in a post above.

Wasn't that Wyland or Wailin gear in Sun Valley about 10 years ago? My buddy owns Simpson frame in Hollywood and he recommended Wailin? where we picked up what he called a Hot-Rod box, early style box with late model super quick gears, very nice and responsive box, for my brothers 72 El Camino, he's never had a single issue with it and it is very responsive.  I think Lee bought the business and I've heard more than one complaint.

Mild Modifications / Re: thinking about a modern 302
« on: July 02, 2008, 06:45:44 AM »
The '68 and '69 302 used a 350 block, '67 used a 327 block for that matter, only difference was a 3.00" stroke compared to the 327's  3.25" stroke and the 350's 3.48" stroke.
have fun.

Saginaws were equipped on vehicles with engines producing less than 300 HP's. Tranny popping out of gear is a sign of a bad syncro. either go with a period correct Muncie or have your Saginaw rebuilt.

Thats Nov 18, '68, date codes on the block and heads imply the motor may be out of the same car since the seller is claiming it to be a DZ and the tranny is out of a 69 Camaro? Can't tell if the block was decked or just the pad ground down if so why? just a hunch. are the whereabouts of this car known?

Thanks John, found a link in Team Camaro mentioning the VC-1810/B28, same one I assume? It does however call for VC-680/B1 for the 69-70 302, not enough vacuum early enough with the B1?
What about springs while I'm at it?
thanks again.

Anyone know which vacuum advance control pod to use as a replacement in my DZ 302's 480 distributor?

I am interested as well. Are the numbers Ed listed corect? Ed, there is a guy that makes these pumps from old housings and new Delco parts I believe. Goat Hill Classics. I think he does good work. Buy COD or at a show if you can.

found on a web search:

Restoration / Re: Correct locaton of proportionong valve on sub frame
« on: June 09, 2008, 01:21:28 PM »
I can't explain why Chevy named them the way they did, but functionally, the one on the frame is a true proportioning valve (and its function was later incorporated into the "combination valve" that combined proportioning, front metering, distribution, and differential pressure switch functions in the mid-70's). The round one under the master cylinder has no proportioning function - it just remains closed until its inlet sees 30-40 psi, then it opens and allows fluid pressure to the front discs.

The function of the round metering valve (or "hold-off" valve) is to allow the rear system to see 30-40 psi (which moves the rear drum shoes out into contact with the drums) before the front discs see any pressure, to avoid disconcerting "front brakes first" on pedal application, which causes "nose-dive" at low speed. The metering valve on my '69 Z/28 is stuck open (needs a rebuild), and at low speed light brake application the car nose-dives and feels like it'll stand straight up on its nose when you step on the brakes. Gotta rebuild it this winter if I can find the correct kit with ALL the seals.

With that said I think my hold off valve (round valve) may not be opening soon enough since I tend to get premature rear brake lock up during panic stops. Because of this I took apart the subframe mounted proportioning valve and cleaned out what appeared to be hardened or glazed brake fluid gunk but the back wheels still tend to lock up during hard braking. Do you think tearing into the hold off valve will resolve my issue? how do you test the hold off valve for proper function?

Decoding/Numbers / Re: DZ 302 186 heads
« on: May 22, 2008, 01:30:34 AM »
I'm not positive about the 2-digit year code after '67 (my Corvette focus is '57-'67, and the 2-digit year code was the Tonawanda small-block discriminator during those years); Tonawanda big-block casting date codes used a single digit for the year. They may have changed the small-block date code format during and after 1967.

Thanks for the info JohnZ, apparently the "T" blocks also use a single digit year code for model year '69, whether cast in 68 or 69, but I concur on the missing front plug. here's a T on the face of another "T" block in the area behind the timing chain. I wonder if that identifies it as a Tonawanda casting?

Both plants had dedicated foundries nearby, so generally no blocks were exchanged between them. But exceptions could occur.

Post or email me a pic of the pad and I'll take a look.

Heres the link, seller just informed me no front plug so with the stamp and JohnZ's info it's definitely a Tonawanda block, but it has a single digit for the year.
