This engine may be what it says it is, but I would be cautious.  The 3914678 casting number was also used on the 327 and 350, and with the last letter of the application code in question, I would not be 100 percent sure.  There are 327 and 350 codes in 1968 that start with M.

291 heads are common but the 3279 crank is not common.  Just my 2 cents.

If I was looking for a 302 I would buy it.

General Discussion / Re: Goodmark SS Hood
« on: October 18, 2008, 03:38:14 AM »
I picked up a new Goodmark 67-69 Camaro SS hood today that will go on my father's car over the winter.
I was very impressed with how it looked, but as of right now I can't comment on how it fits, because it
has not been bolted on yet.

I have an OLDER Goodmark cowl hood on my 68.  It fits OK, but not great.  I think the quality has improved
over the years.  The SS hood I put on my 67 Chevelle fit well - with original fenders.

Try to find a local Goodmark dealer and buy from them.  Sometimes you won't have to pay the shipping
charges if they are putting in a big order or if they order on a regular basis.  That can help keep the cost
down.  I paid under 300, including tax.  That price did not include the louvers.

General Discussion / Re: Were there 69SS327's built?
« on: October 18, 2008, 01:05:19 AM »
Could the car in question have a 350 in it and not a 327?  I believe they used the same block casting number.

Check the engine code on the block and also check to see if there is a partial VIN on the engine to see if
it is correct for the car.

It could be an SS 350 car.  Note I said COULD BE.

I don't have much info about the Goodmark Camaro SS hoods, but my dad has one on order.  I will update
you once it arrives and we look it over.

I did buy one for my 67 Chevelle SS and I was impressed.  Very good quality on the one I got.

General Discussion / Re: 400 block...
« on: October 13, 2008, 10:02:09 PM »
dutch,

I now understand the reasoning for building the 400.  If your 302 is original for the car, I guess I would NOT put it back in the car for
daily driving.  It is too valuable.

Build a 400, but make sure you do it right.  Find a good 2 bolt main 400 block, build it with the 5.7 rods and 10:1 compression (which
will depend on your piston and cylinder head combo) and you will have a blast.

dutch,

Why not rebuild the 302 that you have on the engine stand ???

If that is the correct engine for your car and you have no plans to all out race the motor, just rebuilding that should be fine.
If you are keeping the engine for origiinality and just going to build the 400 to save the 302 for some future rebuild, then
I understand.

The 400 small block Chevy is a good engine, if built correctly.  In my opinion if you are buying new rods and pistons for the
400, I would switch it to 5.7 rods clearanced for the 400 stroke.  There should not be a lot of additional cost for that.

The is no substitute for cubic inches, but then there is no substitute for the quickness and high rpms of a 302 either.

General Discussion / Re: Locking gas cap for 68 SS ???
« on: September 26, 2008, 09:27:32 PM »
Actually I think some of the repo stuff is better than the original.  But I can't say for sure about the gas caps.

In my opinion, the original SS gas caps were always loose, and never sealed correctly.  They would easily rock side to side
or up and down.

What I might try doing is finding a tight fitting regular gas cap and see if somehow combine parts of it with the SS cap to
make things fit better.

I am looking mainly for a good fit, but the locking capability would be a big plus.  Maybe I will try to have a custom one made.

Do you mean that the locking gas cap did not fit correctly or that the SS one did not fit right?

Even though the locking bow tie one won't be exactly correct, I believe it will be better than the original SS one.

First off, I am not trying to give a commercial to this company, but I just found this item this morning.

Go to   http://www.supermuscleparts.com/gascap.aspx

This is a repo, but it is only 24.95

I just wish somebody would make an SS version.

General Discussion / Locking gas cap for 68 SS ???
« on: September 24, 2008, 03:28:32 AM »
Does anyone know if any company makes a locking SS gas cap for a 68 Camaro, or does anyone know
of a way to convert a normal SS cap to a locking one?

Why did the original SS gas caps never seem to fit correctly?

Sorry if this has been asked before.  I tried a search but came up empty.

Originality / Re: Cowl vent panel differences ?

So that means the same panel was used for the 67 to 69 Camaro no matter which hood was installed?

Originality / Cowl vent panel differences ?
« on: September 22, 2008, 08:07:15 PM »
Does anyone know if there is a different cowl panel used with a cowl induction hood versus a regular flat hood or an SS hood?

Someone that I know has one and thinks it is for a 68 Camaro, but it might be from a Firebird.  Would one from a 67=68 Firebird work?

Thanks in advance and sorry if this question has come up before.
