Originality / Re: Camaro driveshaft identification and . . .
« on: November 27, 2016, 01:00:16 AM »
Good afternoon bcmiller.  Here is what went on with my driveshaft. I measured it coming in at U-joint to U-joint centers at 48.5 inches.  Sold it to a p[erson who was looking for 1970 - 1981 shaft.  He calls me up after a week and says it is not right for his '79 Camaro for whatever reason.  The older U-joint with the spring retaining clips were on shafts prior to 1975 and the newer U-joints with a heated plastic installation process were from GM from '76 and up.  I had sold him the spring retaining clip U-joint shaft.
Now, a question; what is the length of a  a 69 shaft versus a shaft from 1970 - 1981 measured center of U-joint to center of U-joint?
Is a '69 shaft 49"   and a 70 - 81 shaft 48.5"  ??
Thanks!
Ted

Ted, sorry for the delayed response.

1969 AMA information says all Camaro driveshafts were 49.56 inches long (measured center of U joint to center of U joint).  I am fairly certain this is the case.

I am not sure on later second generation Camaro driveshafts.  Quoting from another site...
1) 70 Camaro 3 spd,and PG is part number 3981929
2) 70 Camaro TH400 is part number 3981930
3) 70 Camaro TH350, and 4 spd is part number 3981932

Originality / Re: Service Engines (CE coded)
« on: November 27, 2016, 12:44:23 AM »
Why are CE block stampings so irregular (spacing and letter height)? As compared to production engines. The examples pictured in this thread seem to be somewhat helter skelter in there line up.

We generally don't discuss details like this.

Thank you for the clarification-these details get confusing and it is good to understand what's right!
As a follow up- did GM keep records of which vehicles CE engines, CC cases, or CT transmissions ended up in?

Unfortunately no, not that I know if. Some dealerships may have done that, but chances of finding any documentation are very small.

Usually is also stamped same on the gasket surface on the rear of the main case.

It normally is for CC cases, but I don't think it is for CT stamped complete units.

Cook_dw,
I would gladly post the pics you've requested but from what I have read my transmission is a warranty replacement.  The numbers show it to be. Muncie M20 but a 69 model instead of a 68. Also there is no VIN stampings on it all. They don't appear to have been ground off, just never been stamped

A warranty (CT stamped) transmission would not have a VIN.

Tell us more.  What is the assembly date stamp on the pad?

Nothing on that VIN. You are in the same boat as a lot of people.

Engine and/or transmission missing is pretty common.  Axle typically stays with the car - unless it has been messed with A LOT.  And once the axle is gone, proving things gets more difficult without documentation.  That is my experience.

Check the axle date and code, then post or send direct to me and I can let you know if it is typical.  If it is, that may be original to the car, and then not an SS.  Holes can be drilled, so the Muncie hole is a clue, not definitive proof.

Are you thinking it was a small block or big block?  Have you checked the radiator, heater box, cross member?  Have you looked for the rear proportioning valve? The link to the 1968 model ID page is below.

http://www.camaros.org/diffs68.shtml

Another thing is you could pay the $ and get the original selling dealer from the link provided for NCRS docs, and then try to find information from the dealership if it still exists.  But that would be like finding a needle in a haystack.

As for pics, you need to reduce the size to 200 KB or less to attach.  Or host them somewhere else and link to them.

Stamp seems reasonable.

Looks like a good deal. Being able to drive it while you make gradual improvements is HUGE. That keeps things fun.

Oh and yes, WELCOME to the site. :)

Russ it depends on whether or not the pics are attachments or if they are linked to another site.

If they are attachments, you have to be logged in to see them.

Drop the oil pan to check the number on the crankshaft. That's the fastest way to determine for sure what you have now. Since the block has been decked, rebuilt (and the original application code stamp is mostly gone), no way to determine what it was originally.  And no way to say FOR SURE if the heads and crank were originally with that block.  If the head casting dates are close to the casting date of the block you could assume they are original, but can't be 100 percent sure.

The reason I said what I did is that I know there are over a dozen 350 engines out there that I personally know have 400 crankshafts in them. So they are now 383s. :)

Decoding/Numbers / Re: Hurst shifter identification help
« on: November 12, 2016, 07:48:56 PM »
Well I am sure it wasn't in a 67-69 Camaro originally. Looks like a 3 speed shifter (look how many levers there are on the bottom side and let us know). Probably for a pickup or bench seat car.

It's best not to be too specific about what is wrong with the stamping.

A picture would help. Sounds like a Hurst 3 speed shifter that I have.

Or you can have a Photo bucket or similar account and link to pics there.
