It’s in CA so makes sense that it would be from a LOS car.

Ed, I know what you are saying. But sometimes the “worker bees” just get the work done and upper management may not know the details. Been there, done that. :)

Now obviously I have no personal first hand knowledge of this for Camaro production, but for minor things, I sure would not be surprised if it happened. Not all day, every day, but occasionally. That’s what inspections are for (P T B). Again most of these things were fixed before leaving the assembly plant.

Interesting. Can you carefully clean off the pad and take a better pic?

The serial numbers don't match but would have been on the assembly line in Norwood at the same time. I've owned the car for 37 years and the girl that owned it before me had owned it since the early 70s. Neither one of us replaced the engine. I've heard stories of the factory pulling engines with problems on the line, fixing it, and reinstalling it in the next car on the line that needed that engine. Anybody heard of such a thing? How could you prove the car was born with the wrong engine? The date codes on the engine match the car perfectly.

There are rare cases of things like this happening.

If you want, send me a pm with the car VIN and a pic of the engine stamp. Then will evaluate and get back to you.

I have not read it all yet, but thanks for posting this!!!!

Generally we don’t have data outside of 67 to 69.

Is this VIN in the DB? Danny

I assume you mean 9L510337 - it’s a 69 correct?

I am sure some incorrect things made it past the station where mismatched colors, etc. where put on the car originally. But there were inspections and quality control farther down the line. Most of that was probably fixed. Notice I said most, not all. Obviously things that were very minor made it through inspection.

There may have a slightly higher number of inconsistencies toward the beginning and toward the end of the model year.

Ed knows where I am going with this.  If the indicator is original to the car and it is the Turbo 400 type, that indicates the engine was a 396.  Just one thing to look at...

Andi is it a column shift manual 3 speed or an automatic? If an automatic, how many forward gears?

Yes, without the original engine, transmission and rear axle it will be tough to figure out what it had originally.

Also remember this, Chevrolet played around with the RPM that they used for horsepower and torque ratings. The numbers below are for 1969.

427/335 hp - the 335 hp was @ 4800 - Torque was   470 @ 3200 (10.25 compression)
427/390 hp - the 390 hp was @ 5200 - Torque was   460 @ 3600 (10.25 compression)
427/400 hp - the 400 hp was @ 5400 - Torque was   460 @ 3600 (10.25 compression)

427/425 hp - the 425 hp was @ 5600 - Torque was   460 @ 4000 (11.0 compression)
427/430 hp - the 430 hp was @ 5200 - Torque was    450 @ 4400 (12.0 compression and more timing)
427/435 hp - the 435 hp was @ 5800 - Torque was    460 @ 4000 (11.0 compression - 3x2 barrel carbs)

In other words, look for grease pencil markings after removing the rear seat. Look along the top edge of the metal structure, behind where the top of the upper seat would be.
