Maintenance / 1968 Monoleaf Rear Spring Front Bushing
« on: January 11, 2010, 04:09:58 PM »
Two questions: when the monoleaf rear springs were available from GM, did they come with the front bushing installed or was the bushing sold seperately? Also, has anyone installed the Perfect Circle front bushing. How is the quality, would you recommend them? Thanks, Joe.

What is the correct inside diameter of the Corbin style wire clamps originally installed on first generation Camaro heater hoses?. There is one size for the 5/8" ID heater hose, and another for 3/4" ID heater hose. Also, were the clamps originally colour-coded? Thanks.

Maintenance / Ball Joint Lubrication Problem
« on: April 24, 2009, 07:05:44 PM »
I recently replaced all four ball joints on my 68 coupe with TRW products. Three of the ball joints accept the new grease while purging the old grease. However, one of the ball joints will not purge out the old grease. The rubber boot swells as I pump in new grease but no old grease comes out. Any ideas as to what is causing this problem and suggestions how I might correct this? Thanks for any help provided. Joe.

Maintenance / 1968 6 Cylinder Radiator Hoses Part Numbers
« on: April 20, 2009, 12:38:08 PM »
I'm looking for the GM part numbers for both radiator hoses for my 1968 6 cylinder engine? No P/S, no A/C, no A.I.R. Also, does anyone know of a source (besides GM dealers) where I might find both? Thanks for your help. Joe.

Maintenance / Vibration - not the good kind
« on: September 01, 2008, 01:15:38 PM »
My 68 6 cylinder 3 speed manual drives as smooth as silk up to 60 mph. Beyond that speed, there is a general vibration throughout the car, some of it felt at the steering wheel but not excessively. In order to cure this, I was thinking, for starters, of having the four wheels rebalanced, then the driveshaft. If those steps don't cure the problem, how should I proceed? Opinions and recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks, Joe.

Originality / Torque Drive Transmission
« on: August 02, 2008, 12:24:22 PM »
I am curious about the Torque Drive transmission, option MB1, that was available in 68 and 69 with the 6 cylinder engines. My 68 shop manual doesn't include it but my 69 manual does, implying that the option was available part way through 68. Can anyone confirm this and give an approximate availablity date? Also, I assume that the shift lever was column mounted only, am I correct? Finally, does anyone have or had a Camaro with this option? If so, how did it perform? Thanks, Joe.

« on: July 09, 2008, 06:30:32 PM »
Can anyone tell me the GM part number for the clutch release bearing for my 68 Camaro 6 cylinder 3 speed manual transmission? It is the longer one at 1 7/8". Thanks, Joe.

Maintenance / Clutch Release Bearing Gouges
« on: July 04, 2008, 04:14:46 PM »
Can anyone help me figure out what caused the two gouges pictured on my Federal Mogul 1697 clutch release bearing? The gouges are located at the two points where the release fork contacts the bearing collar. The bearing has been in my 68 Camaro 3 speed for 10 years and has 20,000 miles on it. I removed the bearing from the car to inspect it because I had the transmission out; the bearing didn't give any problems when driving the car. I still have the original GM bearing that has 95,000 miles on it which has no gouges whatsoever. A second question; when I press on the face of the bearing, the part that contacts the clutch fingers, and spin it, it turns smoothly and quietly. However, if I spin the face without applying pressure, it drags and is noisy. Is this normal? Thanks for any help that can be provided. Joe.

Maintenance / Saginaw Manual Trans Front Bearing Shield
« on: January 22, 2008, 12:34:40 AM »
The factory original GM front bearing in my Saginaw 3 speed trans came with a metal shield facing the inside of the transmission. About 10 years ago the bearing was replaced with one without the shield, apparently will no ill effect. Any opinions or comments about the absence or presence of the shield? Thanks, Joe.

Originality / Gearshift Knob Part Number
« on: November 23, 2007, 01:26:32 PM »
Does anyone know the part number for a 1968 3 speed column shift knob? The colour is blue, goes with the 717 blue interior. Many thanks.

Maintenance / 3 Speed Trans Rebuild
« on: November 18, 2007, 01:12:05 PM »
I have a question regarding the synchronizers on my 3 speed trans but this question can apply to 4 speeds also. I'm rebuilding my trans using all NOS GM synchronizers, gears and blocking rings, all in perfect condition. The 1st and reverse synchronizer slides very nicely but the 2nd and 3rd less smoothly. The GM shop manual says that the synchronizer assembly (hub and slider) is a matched set and must be kept together. No problem, I haven't mixed them up. My question is, is the circular location of the slider on the hub matched also? If so, then there's probably a mismatch there as I've removed the slider from the hub without marking the relationship. Is it just a question of trying out the slider on each of the 30 different splines on the hub to find the smoothest combination. Or are there other ways to ensure a smooth sliding action. All comments and suggestions are appreciated. Sorry about the long-winded question, but I want to get this right the first time. Thanks for any help provided.

Maintenance / Noisy Valve Lifters or Valves Needing Adjustment?
« on: August 22, 2007, 04:46:20 PM »
How can I differentiate noisy valve lifters from valves needing adjustment. The engine in question is a stock 230 cubic inch six cylinder which runs perfectly. Thank you, Joe.

Originality / 1968 Speaker Delete Cardboard
« on: August 03, 2007, 12:44:41 PM »
A while back there was a discussion of this subject. While removing my heater control panel to repair a broken defroster lever, I had easy access to the speaker delete cardboard so I removed it to photograph it, as it is a rare piece. Of course I put it back. Joe.

Maintenance / 68 Inner Heater Box
« on: July 24, 2007, 03:12:48 PM »
Can anyone tell me where the cable, that originates with the top lever (Air-Fan) on the non a/c heater control panel, ends up. All three levers control doors within the inner heater box, I have figured out which doors the bottom two levers control, but not the top lever as it's cable disappears behind the heater box. Furthermore, my shop manual says that sliding the top lever from the left to the centre opens the Air door and sliding it further to the right operates the 3 speed fan. When I slide the lever from the centre to the right, there is extreme drag on the lever and I'm afraid something is going to break. My understanding is that the travel from the centre to the right side is for operating the fan only. Is this correct? I have removed the cable from the lever so I know the binding does not originate in the heater control panel. I'd appreciate any light anyone could shed on this problem as well as directing me to any exploded diagrams of the inner heater box. Thanks in advance. Joe.
