Restoration / 67 327 oil filter bypass valve
« on: January 06, 2013, 02:32:21 PM »
I searched the forums and around the net and can't find what I'm looking for anywhere and CRG has been my favorite source of info for years now so I'm turning to you guys first.

Is anyone familiar with the oil filter bypass valve plate that GM used in the early small block chevy canister type oil filters?  I have the original valve plate and am considering replacing it for new in my new engine but sometimes a new aftermarket part isn't as good as the original.

So my question is:  Does the bypass valve ever need replacing? Does it have any moving parts inside that can stick of does it just divert some oil around the filter? Has anyone ever taken one apart to see what's inside?

TIA, Mike.

General Discussion / powerglide specialty tool
« on: December 04, 2012, 11:00:45 AM »
I'm hoping that someone can share their knowledge of powerglide transmissions with me and save me a bunch of time. I am changing the shifter selector shaft seal and it requires you to remove the shifter shaft first. After removing the drain pan you need to loosen two small (approx 1/4") screws that secure a C clamp to the shifter shaft so that you can slide the shaft out of the tranny case. Sounds easy enough right?

Well the screw heads appear to be 12 point which is unusual in small size screws. They may even be something different but they are in a spot that makes it hard to measure them or count the points. 1/4" six point slips and 7/32" six point is too small. Metric six point won't turn them either.

My question - are these 12 point heads? Do I need a specialty tool to remove them?

Thanks in advance, Mike.

Restoration / reputable machine shop in CT
« on: October 02, 2012, 06:32:29 PM »
I've been a member here for years but haven't posted in a long time. Now I'm getting my hands back into the Camaro and am happy to see that Camaro.org still lives because I have a question that you guys may be able to help me with. Is anyone willing to recommend a full auto machine shop in Connecticut? I'm thinking about completely rebuilding the 327 engine that is in the care now or the original number matching L6 that I have on the engine stand but something needs to be done, the old 327 is dead tired. I live in between New Haven and Hartford area.

TIA, Mike.

General Discussion / parts too good to throw away
« on: September 23, 2010, 03:27:26 PM »
I have a few body parts that I think are too good to throw away but don't have space to store and have no immediate use for. I believe that they are all OEM because they came from my car that I bought in 1987.

Front fender set (weld patches and surface rust)
radiator support (welded patch)
front upper valance (good)
cowl vent (good)
trunk lid (fair)

The fenders and radiator support have surface rust and have weld repair patches but are solid. The trunk has a dent and a little rust in a seam. The valance and vent are nice but need to be stripped.

The parts are in Connecticut for pick up only. Come and see them and make me an offer - I need the space.

Restoration / Deluxe interior door panel emblem
« on: September 14, 2010, 11:28:36 AM »
I am shopping for new door panel emblems for my 68 deluxe interior.  In my search I've found that I can get exact reproduction parts or repro parts with longer stronger studs. The longer posts are claimed to fit better on repro door panels.

Has anyone seen these parts? Do the new improved parts look original? Any pros or cons either way?

Thanks, Mike.

Restoration / repor grille fit
« on: August 08, 2010, 05:44:34 PM »
Has anyone had trouble with a reproduction grille?

I just installed a new grille and when I tried to install the OEM headlight bezels the bezels don't align with the upper and lower grille moldings - the headlight bezel is about a half inch taller than the grille. The grill seemed to fit between the upper and lower valance without squeezing it so I think that the aftermarket grille is just made badly.

My next step is to remove the grille to see if maybe I did squeeze it smaller when I installed it but I don't think that it is possible for me to have crushed it this much. Has anyone ever had the same problem with an aftermarket grille? Will maybe a set of aftermarket bezels fit better to the aftermarket grille?

Restoration / attaching 68 grille to lower valance
« on: August 03, 2010, 09:15:20 PM »
I searched the forum here and can't find what I'm looking for. Can anyone tell me what was used to attach the 68 standard grille to the lower valance? The assembly manual appears to show that it used bolts and nuts but it looks like that would be very difficult to assemble. I'm planning to use clip on nuts on the plastic grille and sheet metal screws.

Restoration / Window felt wiper
« on: July 17, 2010, 10:41:41 AM »
Can anyone give me advice on how to remove a quarter panel window felt without ruining the paint? I'm thinking about removing the window and trying to break the metal tabs of from the back.

Restoration / front window glass mounting hardware
« on: June 30, 2010, 05:12:38 PM »
The plastic rollers in my front windows are worn out and need replacing. Does anyone here have any experience with aftermarket window mounting plates with rollers? CHQ has a set for ~$55 which includes the plates and rollers for one front window glass but I've had bad fitting aftermarket parts in the past.

Or does anyone have any suggestions for rebuilding the rollers?

Restoration / rear bumper brackets
« on: June 13, 2010, 01:01:18 PM »
I'm installing the rear bumper on my newly painted 68 and I'm looking for a way to mount the brackets to the painted surface without ruining the paint. I'm thinking about making rubber gaskets or maybe using gasket paper between the surfaces but it occurs to me that if the material I use causes the seam to hold moisture I'll do more harm than good.

My question - did GM use any gaskets here? Is it best to just bolt it together metal to metal? I'd love to hear some opinions on this.

Restoration / 68 convertible header molding fit
« on: June 06, 2010, 10:11:20 PM »
I'm having trouble installing convertible header moldings on my 68. I bought a repro set from Classic Headquarters and they are so tight that I'm afraid to push them onto the header. Does anyone have any experience with these and did you get them to fit?

Maintenance / Quadrajet rebuild kit
« on: May 25, 2010, 11:49:42 AM »
I haven't rebuilt a quadrajet in twenty years and I need to get one working for my 68. Can anyone suggest where to get a quality rebuild kit? Autozone has a kit for $13 but I'm worried about the quality of the parts.

Originality / right side mirror date code
« on: May 24, 2010, 02:40:19 AM »
I just picked up an NOS OEM mirror on Ebay with a date code of  6-DMI-7. The mirror is rectangular but as has a 67 date code. I thought that all of the 67 mirrors were round so what's up with a 1967 rectangular mirror?

I'm not building a correct show car so I don't really care if the date matches my car but I am curious. I bought this mirror because I don't like the quality of the aftermarket mirror that I bought a while back, it won't even adjust to a position that I can use it. Can anyone say why a rectangular mirror would have a 67 date code?

Thanks, Mike.

General Discussion / The Paddock
« on: April 28, 2010, 11:16:18 AM »
Can anyone give me a recommendation good or bad for The Paddock Performance and Restoration?

http://www.paddockparts.com/

They are the only ones I can find that have Parchment seat backs for my 68 but I've never bought from them before.

Thanks, Mike.

Restoration / Disassemble bucket seat
« on: April 07, 2010, 04:42:19 PM »
I'm a little embarrassed to ask this but can anyone tell me how to separate the backrest of a bucket seat from the seat bottom? I've been wrestling with this for an hour and I'm stumped. What's most embarrassing is that I recovered these seats twenty years ago and obviously got them apart to get the vinyl cover over the hinge pin. I guess it's true that the memory goes first.

The hinge arms appear to be welded to the backrest frame and the hinge pins appear to be welded to the bottom frame. What am I missing?

TIA, Mike.
