For a long time I thought the original orange color was the GM Truck color #516 "Tangier Orange."  But - last June that theory was put to rest.  The original color was Hugger Orange (see picture).  The computer matched color (the original color is on the drip rail) was "Flameau Red" that was virtually idential to Hugger Orange.  In the picture you can see the original color on the drip rail and Hugger Orange as well as Flameau Red spray-outs.

We did look long and hard around the Cowl area, and all I can say for certain is that no one saw white.  If anything, there MAY have been areas that had been black - but it was REAL hard to tell.

I really appreciate the input received thus far - keep it coming!  Thanks to all.

Paul

To answer the questions to date:  1) The original paint was still on the car - it was NOT stripped prior to resortation.  The orange was visible everywhere - but the car HAD been repainted at least 2x before.  It is possible that during the past repaints, the stripes were stripped or sanded off so that the next coat of new paint would be smooth.  (couldn'r feel any evidence of stripes)  At any rate - again, NO STRIPE color was evident.  Some say they beleive the car did not ever have stripes, but others say as a Z, it HAD to have come with stripes.

2) This car came with a black standard interior.

Thanks for your input!

Hello CRG Community:

At long last, we're getting very close to putting paint on my 67 Z/28.  This car was originally painted Hugger Orange (or very close to it....) in 1967 as a special order paint car.  This car DID NOT have a vinyl top.  During the stripping / body work process, we could not find ANY evidence of either black or white stripes on the car.  Nonetheless, I've come to believe that a Z/28 had to have / generally could not have come without / NEEDS stripes to say "Z/28."

Being that this is a special order paint car, I suppose that it COULD have come with either black or white stripes.  I've also learned that in 1969 Hugger Orange Z/28's HAD to have white stripes unless they were ordered with a black vinyl top, in which case the car would have black stripes as well.

But - since this car was made in 1967 - and again its a special order paint car - could it be "correct" with either black OR white stripes?  What would you do?  What do you think would be most "correct?"

Thanks for helping me with this decision.

Paul

My 06A 67 Z was built in Los Angeles and sold new in San Bernadino, CA in June 1967.  Its original black plates started with "VDH."  I hope this helps.  Paul

Kurt - thanks for the info on FSO vs. COPO - I learn something new every day.  And - thanks for the link to the color production estimate data by year.  Very interesting.  The bottom line:  I'm just happy to have a special order paint car.  Paul

I spoke with Bob Wingate who used to be a high-performance salesman at Clippinger Chevrolet in California.  He was the guy who actually ordered and sold my Special Order Paint 67Z (Hugger Orange).  As I recall, Bob said he used to order these cars using the COPO process.  He said a special order paint job cost something like an extra $12 way back in the day.  At any rate, I seem to recall that these cars could be ordered in relatively small lots with unique paint colors - principally for use by a particular company for their fleet vehicles.  When I talked to Bob he said my car was definitely a COPO car, but not in the sense that we think of COPO production cars today. (engine and performance pacakges vs. color)  Interestingly enough, a couple of years ago Jon Mello found a Los Angeles production 67 SS396 for sale on on ebay that was originally painted the same color as my car.  The paint code on the cowl trim tag for that car was O-O like mine, and the "unique" color lot code was L-243D (or something like that), while that same code on my car was L-243C - so that car was litereally the NEXT car painted after mine in 1967.  I should have bought that car for the wife.....  Its probably the case that Bob Wingate ordered up a few "high performance" Hugger Orange cars in 67.  (Z, L78, etc...)  He told me he used to order these uniqe high performance cars, and park them in the front corner of the lot to attract attention (and customers...).  As he told the story, people would come in to the dealership trying to make a deal saying, " I saw one of these cars at X dealership in the same color," as part of their negotiating strategy.  Of course, Bob knew that was absolutly not the case since few salepeople knew how to get cars "painted special" through the COPO process.  Enevitably, the customers would be back - and pay the price Bob wanted for these very unique cars.

I can tell you my June production (06A) 67 Z had black plates on it when I purchased the car - and the 1st 3 letters were "VDH".  I hope that helps.  Paul

Restoration / The story of my 67 Z/28 now undergoing restoration
« on: December 10, 2008, 09:13:31 PM »
Hello Everyone!

Its been quite a while since my last update.  Here's how things stand today.  I've attached a few pictures of the car in its current state at East Coast Muscle Cars.  Things have defintely come a long way.  All of the bodywork is complete, and we're in the blocking stage right now.  The car is looking very straight and in good shape.  I've also attached a picture of a section of original color along the roofrail and Hugger Orange as well as Flameau Red color spraty outs for comparison.  They look virtually identical to me.  The computer indicated the Flameau Red color was a closer match - but I can't tell the difference.

So, bodywork continues while Lucas Restorations/Camaro Hi Performance take on other more limited projects for the car (radiator, smog system, transmission, brakes, etc...)  Little by little, progress is definitely being made.

On the parts hunt - the list has gotten a bit shorter and evolved as well.  Of course, I'm still looking for NOS left door weatherstripping, original Front Door Panels and Rear Panels for a standard, black interior, 2 Rear Deluxe Seat Belts (black), a correct 1967 dipstick, and a correct AM/FM antenna.

All in all - that's not too bad!

I'll keep you posted at the next significant stage.

Restoration / Re: Looking for someone to restore my 1969 Camaro

I can wholeheartedly recommend Ken Lucas/Lucas Restorations.

Before I decided to work with Ken, I went back to Maryland and saw some of Ken's previous projects and met several of the people who would be involved in my restoration project.  I was so impressd with Ken's work that decided to ship my car from California to Maryland just so Ken and his team could do the work on my car.

Jerry MacNeish is obviously an expert on all drivetrain issues, and Lonny Gordon at East Coast Muscle Cars is an absoulte perfectionist when it comes to paint and body.  Everyone on the Lucas Restorations team has treated me very well.  I've been kept very well informed and the documentation of the restoration has been meticulous and very complete.  Ken is a fair and honest man, so I'd definitely give hime a call if I were you - you can't go wrong.

Restoration / Fan Clutch Restoration
« on: July 30, 2008, 08:25:39 PM »
Can anyone give a good recommendation for a place I can send the fan clutch for my 67Z for rebuild/restoration?  I'm a bit worried about making sure it gets to a place with a solid reputation due to the $$$$$ indicated value of this part recently. Thanks.  Paul

Rick Miller does awesome work on trim ring restoration.  He did an original set for my 67Z, and I've seen his handiwork on other cars at Carlisle legends judging this year.  If you are interested, please send me a private message and I'll pass on his contact information.  Paul

Hello guys.

Well, as far as the engine build goes, Guy Mancini put the engine together in 1998.  Its a bone-stock '67 302 with specs in accordance with the following link:   http://www.holisticpage.com/camaro/camaros/302.htm

Kerry - let me check with Jerry/Ken on the "c" date codes on the tanks to see if that's "close enough."  Thanks for looking and keeping me in mind - I'll get back to you soon.

More later...

Well, I called up Heartbeat City to check on the NOS 1967 door weatherstrip - they thought I was out of my mind.  I told them its listed on their website as "67 - 68 - 69 NOS Door Weatherstrip" and they said something like they didn't know it was there.  So, I'm still looking for that LEFT side door weatherstrip folks....  On the radiator front - they want $1,600 for what they say is an original 67/68 Z radiator.  Ouch.  Frankly, I think I'd be happy with "OD" and "IH" coded Harrison tanks, a top rail, and I'll just get a new core and a repro tag.  But I still need the tanks....dated "d" or "e" ideally.

Thanks.

Decoding/Numbers / Re: 67/68 z28 cowl plenum

I know this thread has not had a post in a while - but - at the Camaro Nationals last week I learned that a WIX Element No. 46927R may also fit the cowl plenum air cleaner.  For what that's worth...
