Decoding/Numbers / '68 327/275 exhaust manifold #s
« on: August 14, 2008, 01:13:06 PM »
I'm getting conflicting information from my research on the manifolds I need. I don't really care if I have the 100% correct # casting, I just want it to have the right measurements, etc... to work with my factory exhaust and alternator brackets. Car will not have A.I.R.

I think the LH # is: 3892679 but I've seen two different listings for the RH # 3893608 and 3840912. Can anyone confirm which numbers I need and the differences between the two #s I have for the RH?  Can I use either for the RH?

Thanks in advance, Brian

Restoration / Correct Power Steering Pump
« on: July 22, 2008, 02:59:06 AM »
Hey Folks,

I'm finally to the point where I'm assembling my engine, and I've come across an issue with my PS pump. I bought my pump and pulley from a reputable source online. I'm questioning whether I got the correct pump because of the position of the return line. It is the '68 327/275 setup.  All of the research I've done, and the picture in the A.I.M. says the return line should come out and point down. This makes sense to me because the return line runs down underneath the engine stand and goes up to the pump.

My source says this is the correct one, but I don't see how I'm getting my return line up to the 11:00 position this nipple is in?

My source says this is the correct pump, but has offered to send me another type if I find out it's not correct. Thanks in advance for any help or verification. Brian

Originality / 327/275 Vibration Damper
« on: March 26, 2008, 12:55:33 PM »
Can anyone give me, or point me to where I can find some info about what damper the 327/275 L30 engine had on it? Part #, casting #, diameter, measurements, etc...??

I'm going to try to make my crate engine look like this set up, and I can't seem to find any info on what damper to use. I've searched here, Team Camaro, the web, my dealer, and can't get an answer. GM offers 12551537 damper which is the "clearance problem" damper for their crate engines. It's 6 3/4" diameter, about 2 3/8" "deep", of which about 1 1/8" is the snout. Has anyone used this damper with all the short pump L30 stuff? I'm scared it's going to mess up my pulley alignment.

Thanks in advance for any help, Brian

Originality / '68 327/275 Air Cleaner Snorkel
« on: March 14, 2008, 02:37:59 PM »
Does anyone know if the L30 snorkel is supposed to be smooth, or have the "therm thing" on it? Through my searching this site and others, I've seen photos of original L30s with the therm unit on it. But, the AIM doesn't show one that I can find. I'm not doing a 100 point show car restoration, but would like to have the correct air cleaner if possible. Thanks in advance for any responses...Brian

General Discussion / Will an Impala Air Cleaner Work?
« on: March 08, 2008, 02:14:18 AM »
I'm restoring my '68 RS Vert 327/Pglide and I'm emulating the 275 h.p. set up. I'm up at my neighbor's house, and I notice the snorkel of a black air cleaner sticking out of box of junk. So, I dig it out, and he says it's from a '68 Impala 4bbl. his dad used to have.  I happen to need the air cleaner for my set up. I studied pictures on here, and Team Camaro, of the L30 non-smog, auto,  air cleaner, and this thing looks like it should work!!

The snorkel points to the driver's side, has the Therm in it, and the heat pipe hole underneath. It has the breather hole sticking straight out of the side, on the right side. The breather does not come up from underneather. Unfortunately, my carb is out getting rebuilt and I can't do a test fit or anything. Plus my engine is in 1,000 pieces right now!!

Can anyone confirm or deny if this air cleaner could work??  Thanks in advance, Brian

Originality / Power Steering Pulley
« on: February 19, 2008, 01:43:56 PM »
New poster here!! I've been hanging out at Team Camaro, but now I realize my build seems to be taking a more "correct" direction. LOTS of good info here. A little background first: I'm beginning to gather parts for my engine, and I'm cloning the L30 set up for my '68 RS convertible. I didn't get an engine with the car, so I'm starting from scratch. Originality isn't a must, but I would like to do what I call "emulate" the factory.

Through my research here, I found there are two different PS pulleys for the '68 L30 and L48. Can anyone tell me what the difference would be? The L30 PS (non-smog) pulley is: 3860457CV and the L48 PS (non-smog) is: 3770509. Is there a difference with the diameter? The groove depth? Attachment with nut or not? Pulley throw? etc...

I have a donor pump that is supposedly from a '66 Chevelle 283 and it has the 3770509 pulley on it. Can I run this pulley? I have the correct '68 L30 pump mounting brackets.  Thanks in advance, Brian
