General Discussion / Does a short block include . . .
« on: September 24, 2010, 01:50:04 PM »
Just about ready to purchase a BBC short block and there is no balancer on the unit.. Correct or not to have this item on a short  block..
Can also be bought as a LONG  type purchase.  Does this include fully dressed heads e.g. rocker arms  and springs and guideplates ??
Guy is letting me pay in 3 installments and then I'll pick up the beast.. Seems decent enough, but I'd like your opine(s) on the strict definition of long vs short block..
Thanks!!

General Discussion / Edelbrock C396 QJ and C396 BBC intake
« on: September 24, 2010, 01:43:39 PM »
Just picked up this intake yesterday and it has a dual bolt pattern one for Q-Jet and the other is for Holley carbs. Any idea if this intake is a fair / good / great oval port dual plane ??
Why are there 2 bolts on the psgr. side of the plenum about 2 inches below where the carb would sit?  What would it take to run a square bore Holley on this beast??
Thinking about putting this on a 70s 454 low compression mill..

Thanks!!

Originality / Stock exhaust manifolds when and why . . .
« on: April 21, 2010, 11:28:21 AM »
Why and when did GM switch from individual exhaust manifold runners, e.g. where the manifold runners connect to the head to a, I believe it is called a "log" type unit, meaning the runners are connected at the top.  Again, why and when did they do this? Even headers are connected.
Sorry if I haven't explained me self correctly, but mebbe someone can wade through my dribble?
Thanks!

« on: March 07, 2010, 01:44:40 PM »
Any idea of how many 1969 Camaros were sold with 350ci 2 barrel Rochester engines in comparison to the more popular varieties e.g. 350 4 barrel units and the Big Block engines??
Thanks!

Where on the tranny would I spot the VIN or partial VIN to be sure it is correct for my setup??
Do not believe my Bud would pull the wool over me eyes, but, I have to be sure..
Thanks in advance.

Originality / Part numbers from the 60's, is there any difference
« on: February 07, 2010, 04:19:07 PM »
Have a set of 11/32nds SJ rods  part number 3927145 from way way back with 3 runs on them.. wrong gas and a 060 327 block w/ TRW 2211 AF slugs don't make for a durable combo, eh?
Ran a 12.03 @117 mph in a mid 70's F'bird - no suspension and a fairly stock 'verter. We were happy as heck when we saw the numbers on the board, but after pulling plugs, a couple of the plugs were speckled on the porcelin, and 2 plug tips were a missing..  No scoop on the hood just a hole for the Holley to stick out a mite and be visible when she "belched a 'goodie'  on the line.  Had a 150 lb battery in the trunk to transfer weight more effectively, and she porpoised down the track  a bit.
Sorry about the l'il story, me hearties, but, querstion is, I believe GM has a new number set up for them now, and as such, are they the same rod or a newly manufactured item??
Thanks!

Originality / BBC stock rockers arms with raised "L" on valve tip end
« on: January 28, 2010, 08:57:37 PM »
Going through my BBC stuff from way back and I chanced upon a couple of sets of GM rocker arms with the letter L on the valve tip end.. Is there any difference between these units and other rocker arms that have no lettering in same place??
Thanks!!

General Discussion / Bit of advice re. not checking B 4 winter arrives
« on: November 12, 2009, 12:57:28 PM »
Heard a story yesterday, re. not checking the temperature at which one's anti-freeze quits working.
Fellow had a high dollar 565 BBC with water in it from racing and did not bother to check the above..
He wasn't a happy camper, eh!
Take the time out and check or have it checked.  Guys with electric water pumps, run the pump for a bit and then get your known-good reading guage in there and adjust appropriately..  This happens I am sure more than people admit to..

Originality / 3932472 intake couppla Q's ? ?
« on: November 05, 2009, 07:36:30 PM »
Anybody have a pic(s) of the front of this intake - specifically in the thermostat area..  I have 2 studs coming outta the intake where the thermostat would bolt on and, I am not sure they are what came outta GM in '69??  Also, second part of the query is, what thermostat housing is correct numbers-wise, for this intake??
Thank You!!

Decoding/Numbers / Cast Iron water outlet housing 3705018
« on: July 27, 2009, 06:37:54 PM »
Just came across this cast iron water outlet housing raised-numbered 3705018 - heavy l'il beast it is..
On the other side of the housing opposite the above number is punched  number 2 over GM.
Over the casting number is a square with something in it.. Very hard to de-cipher..
Possibly an early Vette thermostat housing..  Googled number but it seems a mite "murky"!!
Thanks!!

Originality / Oil Pan / water pump cleaning in order to...
« on: May 15, 2009, 11:32:22 AM »
What is the proper way to clean original oil pans/water pumps/valve+timing covers etc in order to get  the "best bang for the buck"??  Right now, old grease and gunk on 'em from way, way back..
Don't wanna be chincy but, would like to do it right..
Thanks!!
