jerry, jason here. picked up rear axle to day not 4.88 axle BU0425G1 looks to be 373.   inside ring and pinion is part number GM3862528  8.39  dated 12 68.   so that is not original.  he told me he was drag racing car in early years put this in shortly after he got car.  when he removed the engine he also took out the diff. and installed the 69 diff that you inspected, for better drivability.  i will send you pics for varification when i get someone out here smart enough to run a computer.  do you want the sent directly to your e-mail address?

jerry jason from sd again.  i am going to buy the original rear end for my z tomorrow, is the vin stamped on it, how do i know if it is the actual rear axle that came in the car.  the guy says it has 4.88 gears thats why he took it out and replaced it with the one in the car now.

jerry, jason here again,  i just located the original rearend for my 68z. thanks for showing me the light of originality.  i found the guy on that original sd title that i showed you, and it just so happens he has the rear axle assembly in his shed, it been sitting there for 35 years, he may have some other parts also.  this is so much fun, reserching this car and finding the correct parts, not just period correct,  but the actual original numbers matching parts.

if they a aftermarket stand and or mounts you will encounter dificultys.  try buying a used set of stand from ricks or e-bay and go from there.

Mild Modifications / Re: 5 Speed swap?
« on: February 14, 2007, 03:17:42 PM »
5 speed out of camaro, firebird bolt to original bell housing with little modification.  you can still use original throw out set up. modify crossmember slightly and move the location of hole in floor a couple in rearward.  remove 5speed shifter and flip it around and it fits in counsel once again this must be relocated about 2 inches rearward, no one will notice it.  i have done this many times, very simple. make sure you get trans from v-8 car.  must be early trans with speedo cable. late ones have electronic speedo.  should be able to by trans on e-bay for less than $500.00.

hey jerry, how much should this engine be worth?  the guy wants $6500.00 does that seem fair. will it increase the value of the car. the engine is supposed to be complete except for manifolds and carb.
