Originality / Re: D80 speedo cable

i do not necessasarly care about the rpm thing.  this car dosen't get driven down the interstate.  4.88 would be fun around town.  i am talking about originality.  the 4.88 were dealer installed shortly after the car was purchased new. would i have to change the carrier to go back to 3.73 gears? if any body has a set of oem 3.73 please let me know?
my 1971 z28 had 4.88 in high school, i drove it all over the place, but the speed limit was 55 then so no big deal.

i am supposed to be picking up the engine this month.  he had sent i arizona to sell at a big swap meet.  i caught him and he is bringing it back with him.  where in the world do you find a used set of gears.  most people i know are scared to install used gears?  would the 4.88 be so bad?

jerry this is jason in south dakota.  the speedo in my camaro reads perfect now with the 4.10 rear axle.  when i replace the diff with the original one will i have to replace the plastic gears in the trans or just install the adapter. i am pretty sure i have a few of those lying around.  the look the same as the one on a 70s 4x4 pickup that runs speedo out of transfer case.  i only want to do this once so any help would be greatly appreciated.

jerry, this is jason.  you are welcome in our state any time.  it just goes to show maybe we are not so backwards here in the middle of nowhere.  you would be suprised i am sure by the number of car outhere.  we value the past and do not salt the roads.  so no one drove there cars in the winter, only there 4x4s.  i have to busy to get the rear axle pics on the site as of yet. i guess that is good. if i am getting paid to work on other peoples cars than not looking at mine is acceptable to me.

the vin is stamped on lot of places on a 68 camaro. one other spot is in the trunk floor behind the left hand bumper support. also it is stamped on the trans tunnel towards rear from under car. i have also saw vins stamped on trunk dropoff.  maybe stamped at other places also,  these are just some of the places i have found vin stamping on my 1968 z28, have also noticed this on other 68 camaros i have owned.  these hidden numbers only became visible after completely media blasting the shell.

you know what happens when we assume!  i also never dreamed of finding the correct engine, not only found it it led me to the original rear axle assembly ect, ect.  maybe because there are so few people in south dakota did this happen, but never say never.  save the engine, or be prepared to pull it out if the correct car arises or you may have to sell it to the man with the car. either way never give up these thing are ment to rest together.
good luck in your pursuit!!!!
