Originality / Re: Original L79 valve covers
« on: July 25, 2018, 02:39:10 PM »
I did the upside down in the 70,s and while retightening the intake notices the covers moving slightly while running. Later on I have seen covers with holes rubbed in them.

I have see the cable from the dash to the rear get a short and cause that also. Replacing seat frames and door sills are usually the culprit. If you unplug both ends and test it with a meter it is pretty easy to rule it out one way or the other. I doubt this problem and your brake light are directly related.

steering wheel looks like a mid year vette to me. Car would probably make a nice driver but the price is not for a driver.

Mild Modifications / Re: Hone-o-drive unit on ebay...

I read an article about installing one in a first gen and it did require tunnel mods but it was denting it not cutting it. I may bid on it if the price is right. The gasser I have not built yet would be cool with 488,s and the hone. Big block, 400 turbo, PS, AC, 488,s, and Hone OD.

I have been using 303 on my new boat and on my cars about a year now. I like it. Hope the uv claim works. It does soften vinyl and kind of dries so it is not so slick feeling. Kind of pricey but autozone has sales on it a lot.

Good old dishwashing soap and a soft brush. It says it is even kind to sensitive hands.

Maintenance / Re: Coil Issues
« on: July 11, 2018, 08:34:19 PM »
In the early 70,s we only had points and crappy wires. If you drove your car on the street a while the misfire around 4500 started. We called it (busting out). Fresh plugs, and I mean fresh would straighten it out. We carried a new set for money street races. Someone had a spark plug sandblaster that helped a lot, small unit with a grommet hole for the plug. Then came Accel points and the big yellow Accel super coil the hung on the firewall. You also have to remember the tune up intervals when cars had points. When HEI started the selling point on new cars was no tune up for 20,000 miles. I think some guys might have weak coils but some just have original equipment old cars.

Don,t let your excitement overwhelm your judgement. It may not be unmolested. The grill and the shine on that color makes me think it has at least be repainted. I doubt the stripe is original and there could be hidden rust repairs. At 50 years old 20 year old make overs can look original.

I think I would hit it with the good old wire brush first so the loose stuff does not slow down the evaporust treatment.

Although I don,t have the car anymore I think there were some clips that pushed on the metal of the package tray. I do remember it was not very neat.
