Maintenance / Re: Rebuilt Engine - black spark plug at #8
« on: August 08, 2018, 08:55:34 PM »
There is a utube video of a guy a guy checking out of the box aluminum heads mainly for valve angle cuts and leakage. It shows some really surprising things good and not so good. I think you brand was one of the brands. Valve seals would be my first place to look. I might would contact them and tell them you are doing that.

William, you never cease to enlighten me. The 4889 for L78,s is what I always believed. For automatics 10% or 489 is what I thought. What is your thought on L78 auto?

Since no one has responded, I have looked at them but not side by side and the repop looked good to me. You might contact JM and ask. He is a nice guy and I feel sure he would know.

While I agree with the above, a few thoughts. I assume you have a dual plane intake? Kind of makes the pics showing one side of the motor with darker plugs rule out a few things.  What heads? rebuilt original done at the same time? aftermarket? two that were not a pair? I think several valves on one side are leaking oil. I would start with all the seals on that side with the head on checking for excessive clearance while doing it. Worse case you can pull that head with the intake on. Just bolts, exhaust, ect. I frowned on doing that until we had a completely show detailed engine with a gasket leaking water in one cylinder. It was fairly easy and a little touch up on the head paint and ready to go. If you have an AC car I would drive it like it is.

Maintenance / Re: 396 engine rear main seal replacement

I think the seal procedure is the same in or out on an assembled engine. It is getting the oil pan off and on that is the real b-t--. I did a pan swap (no seal) and should have pulled the motor. Some cars the pan drops off. Some cars fan shroud, hoses, exhaust bolts, motor mounts, ect. Then the motor is just sitting there.

Ed,s comment was $15k to$20k over priced at sale. I took that to be from the $52k ebay number. That would be $32 to $37k give or take. Very nice car but made up cars usually are $40k or less.

I think the AM/FM slider has to be removed. And no I don,t remember how to.

I think the car is really nice but agree with Ed,s pricing. If it were me I would lawyer up and offer a price change(ie) send me a check as a negotiation or else.

Memories of our old cars are great. But without a window sticker or build sheet that is all they are memories.

Decoding/Numbers / Re: What do you think of this stamp?

To me the broach marks do not look right. Too clean, like the cutter was brand new. But if you had not told me I would be fooled.

It looks as though most of the cars were dragged out of the pole building for photos. Look at the picture backgrounds. There must be a gozillion wheels and parts. Maybe a Friday and Saturday. Unless some bigtime dealer shows and throws a lump for stuff it could be a pickers paradise. I went to a smaller one in NC a few years back and they had alternaters, carbs, and muncies on pallets sitting in the field. Bidding started crazy but by noon they were asking for starter bids. You ought to try loading a L78 complete short block into a pickup by hand. (It was a Chevelle block by the way).

567
Most Novas were really low end or option cars. The L78 was not really that expense of an option but the L89 was. Low end is probably why they just do not bring much money. If you look at them at the shows a clock is rare and AC is even rarer.

Wished it was closer. It would be a nice way to spend Saturday and you might get lucky. There is enough that the guys with itchy bucks may stop bidding and really not nice enough for flippers.

General Discussion / Re: red 69 Z, original, but a project on ebay
« on: July 27, 2018, 11:08:48 AM »
Really? buy the car, 30k and a lot of work and then you have 65k in another red on black, non X code, undocumented 69 Z. And I did say a lot of work. And that piece of distributer in the block? Might want to drop the pan. Last time I saw that there were pieces of rod stuck at the cam.
