6-cylinder Camaros / Re: New 1967 find! Early VIN 7L100118 L6 3 speed
« on: April 29, 2015, 10:38:48 PM »
Car was probably a dealer demo car for the first 3 months of its life, then sold in December.

That's what I was thinking. One of the first cars delivered to the dealer, with a hot color and low MSRP, it was probably used to upsell the customer into a car with a few more options.

It's not often you see the delivery date stamped on the VIN tag.

12/6 on an 08D built car is a long time when these cars where hot sellers in the fall of 1967

A trim tag error for the interior would be rare. Is there a grab handle above the glove box?

With 124 VIN prefix, X11 can be base V8 or SS350 V8.

An original correctly dated Muncie 4 speed with matching partial VIN stamp, along with date correct 12 bolt multi leaf rear end would be a good start to proving SS.

You can pay an expert $1000 plus travel expenses to fly in and check it for you, or you can try and decode it yourself with a little help by posting more information here and asking questions.

Let's star with the trim tag on the fire wall. Can you post a picture of it?

As far as "I need the "documentation" to sell it for big bucks", its not a numbers matching car because its missing the original engine, so collectors are probably not interested. The good news is that an enthusiast still pay good money for nice cars.

That guy sells a lot of Camaro's. He likes to photograph them at that summer resort area, Geneva on the Lake OH.

Looks like he found the HDR button on the camera!

The story .. not sure what sounds embellished to you  ???

This:

Quote
He bought all of them during the early 70's (71-73).  All supposedly matching numbers front to back and all original and untouched except for the (1) 68 that had front end damage (reason for the orange nose).  Six first gen true RS SS's stored away for the future

Looking at the pictures of the cars, I don't see original untouched cars that look like they where put away when they where 4-6 years old.

Maybe I misinterpreted your statement. Perhaps they where that way when he bought them in 1971-73 and then he proceeded to enjoy using them for many years before they got old and tired and then he stored them for the future.

To me, they look like the first gen Camaro's I used to find in the middle 80's, before the big restoration phase and run up in prices. Still, nice find and thanks for sharing.

Looks like a nice find! Too bad he will probably not sell any of them, at least not at current marked value. But it wouldn't hurt to keep in touch and continue trying. Sometimes collectors like this appreciate the attention. Sometimes they don't, but then they usually don't show them off.

The story is nice, but does sound a bit embellished. Those are 80's style steel wheels, how did they get on there if they where all bough in 1970-73?
As far as one car having every option available, that is just not possible. There are to many overlapping options and multiple option choice's for this to happen. But that was a common way to describe high option cars back in the day, before we actually White Books and RPO lists.

And the black one isn't an SS.

That VIN comes up clean on the NICB theft record check. Has it been reported stolen?

You used the word "kidnapped" not stolen. You are a PI so I assume you have a reason for that. Is this more of a domestic case or a skip trace than an outright auto theft case?

Do you know the identity of the mid 30's Hispanic female last seen driving it?

With that VIN and trim tag, your would have been a 307 or 350 V8 small block. No other engine possible.

The trim tag shows original Lemans Blue with white convertible top and deluxe ivory interior. That is a super desirable color combo. Someday you could put it back to that if you get tired of the triple black it is now.

That car is so far from stock, leave it as is. It's a nice custom.  If you wanted old school factory original, get another car.

General Discussion / Re: Ron Pratte collection

One thing, I'd like to know, how they figured out it is a re-body. Everyone was so sure it wasn't, back then.

Jerry M. wasn't there inspecting cars last time - he is this year.  :-)

Jerry M inspected the car for the owner before the 2008 auction and the car hasn't changed. What has changed is that Jerry M is now working for BJ and they are trying to reduce the amount of fraud and misrepresentation.

This car was outed on this site and TC, so much so that Mike Joy himself signed up to post about the car.

They really had no choice but to change the description to reflect the re-body. The restoration (re-stamped) drivetrain was noted in the "final" 2008 inspection report, but not in the auction description.

Does anyone see a change in how the cars are described this year? I have. Quite a few Corvettes now being described as having reproduction trim tags.

From BJ description:
Quote
Car was re-bodied and restored with all GM sheet metal, bumpers and tons of NOS GM parts.

I don't remember the "re-bodied" being there when the car was first listed. Maybe now that Jerry M is responsible for verifying all the Camaro's at BJ and this car is so well known on the Camaro boards, he requested a description change.

Jerry MacNeish and Norman Meads were hired by Vice President of Consignment, Gary Bennett, at The Barrett Jackson Auction Company.  Our job is to authenticate all restored first-generation Camaros, Nova’s and Chevelle’s that are consigned to all Barrett Jackson auctions.  Our mission is to protect the consigners and buyers who attend these auctions by verifying that the description on all vehicles is correct.  If the description states that the car is number’s matching, it is our job to verify and certify that the drive train in the car is original to the car.  If it is not, the consigner must change the description of the vehicle.  Due to all of the fraud and misrepresentation in the car hobby today, Barrett Jackson is going the extra distance to bring honesty back to the collector car hobby.

Everything I saw in the Ron Pratte collection sold well last night and this car was no exception. I was just dissapointed that they cut to commercial when it went across the block. I would have loved to hear the commentary on that one! I suppose they wanted to avoid any controversy like last time when Pratte bought it. Anyone here attend the auction and recall what was said about the car on the block?

Reproduction door panels have a "puffy' appearance, like yours. Originals are much flatter.

U17 was available on any model. However, you have the body broadcast copy, which shows what was installed at the factory. I can't read your small picture very well, and by no means an expert, but I believe on line 3 it should have a cluster box and yours looks like "NF". That would correspond to a sticker on the back of the cluster.  I don't have a list of cluster codes, but CRG should know. I am guessing Kurt knows these codes and NF is probably the standard speedo and fuel gauge.

Also, reproduction tachs look different. Post a pic of the tach if you want to know OEM or reproduction.
