Decoding/Numbers / Re: - - Special paint 69

It's clearly a V and the date is in perfect alignment with the VIN

Probably was an L78 as advertised. Motor rebuilt by 1971 and gears changed by 1972, unless the 1972 ad guessed wrong about the gears.

Wonder what gears are actually inside now?

Reproduction tag, and not a good one either. Caulk looks like they put some effort into making it look good though.
The rest of the data don't look good either.

Actually, there were only 3 different 396 engines in 1968, L34, L35, & L78. The L89 was a cyl head option that could've been ordered with the L78 engine....Joe

Nope. You have to add the 272 L89 engines and the 4575 L78 together. It also has it's own engine suffix code, MT vs MQ.

Show me a 1968 WS that has both L78 and L89 options on it and I will change my mind.

I would say that’s an erroneous statement because the small block was only available in just one hp rating. The 396 had 4 different versions.

I don't see how that is erroneous. Add up all the 4 versions of BB available and compare it to the one small block version available as an SS. There you go, more big block SS than small block SS in 1968.

Decoding/Numbers / Re: Caveat Emptor...tag swap?
« on: February 14, 2024, 02:36:02 AM »
So William edited his comment after my post and when the seller added a new VIN picture to the ad. It was 124379N644550 in the ad and in Williams post. Then the seller added a picture of VIN 124379N605034 and William edited his post. Then the seller changed the VIN to 124379L516141, probably after someone here asked about it.

May be a legit car with paperwork. May be a tag swap. May be a seller using the Camaro police for kicks and exposure. Either way, buyer beware.

If that VIN is really on that car, it's a bigger problem than not matching the cowl tag.

That VIN is attached to this cowl tag and is on an existing vehicle recently sold. I suspect it's just a lazy dealer/seller that did not update his template.

Is $350 too much to gamble on being able to find a serial number, and then finding it to be what you are hoping for?

Thank u 68 ragtop.

Your welcome! You can see it online for free. It's just a single picture and paragraph in an article about BJ Auction cars and prices.

Where is that car today, 9 years later from the OP?

A simple internet search shows June 2015 P. 58

The OP is not researching what special paint is.
He runs a reproduction window sticker service and is only looking for very specific information on how the 1967 special paint option was represented on the window sticker.
Much information about special paint is already published, here on CRG and as linked above.

124378L3411401109 - 17 digit VIN on a 68?

Wow, must be a one of one special edition.  ;D
You can find a lot more info on this car if you search the proper VIN. Claims to be number matching, still doesn't show engine numbers.

^I  like this version a lot and really would not have minded if Chevrolet styled the car this way

Let's go one step further and send them right over the roof too.

Just want to add a kudo to David K! Kinda wish CRG would have been around in the early 70’s as I would not have had any problems finding for sure the all important paper work I need to know for sure what I have in my 69’ SS L78. 50+ years owned. CRG and the Forums is the best thing I’ve come across in my recent restoration of my car. Thanks.

Actually in the 70's Chevrolet had all the documentation, but no one wanted it. Then they threw it away.

I wish I would have bought $1 of bitcoin when it was introduced. Just one dollars' worth, and you could have all the Camaro's you wanted today.

obllique lighting can help ID shallow objects on a flat surface.

All the lighting in the world won't make a Z/28 code appear on that tag. 10D perhaps.

Blue dots in the back up lights. Dare to be different, I guess.

That was common in the late 70s and early 80s.

I was alive then. We put them in the red lens to make purple running and brake lights. The white lens only comes on when in reverse, so not very effective.
