Originality / Re: Small Block Spark Plug Wire Retainers Painted Black?
« on: October 28, 2012, 05:50:52 PM »
My '69 Z/28 has all four of its original plug wire retainers, and they're natural (unpainted) with the ends dipped in black vinyl or plastic; they were apparently shielded from orange paint by the plastic mask used on the aluminum valve covers.

Thanks John for the info. The two pictured came out of a old group of parts & did not come off our Z (either a 327/300 or 350/300) but that black paint surprised me and seemed odd.

Considering the painting process for the 302 (the intake and rocker covers were masked with plastic shields), my guess is that the retainers would remain black with maybe some orange over spray on the very outside edges and underneath.
The question John is were they dip painted black or natural from the factory? Even if it was any hyd. motor the retainer that goes inside would protect the black from being sprayed orange. But your comment is 100% correct.

James, anybody, have you seen this on other cars, i.e. these looms painted black? I'm detailing our finished motor and trying to determine what is correct.....

Welcome aboard Roy and X3, what do you have now? Any Corvettes?
P.S. Purchased our first vette in 83 (1967) and still have it.

Working to finalize items on our 68Z motor (paint scheme) and noticed from my old supply of parts I had two original spark plug wire retainers that were painted black. I believe both of these to be original but not sure what small block they might have come off of. Were these or certain years painted black? They seem like they might have been dipped??????

X3 on the hat!  ;D You started something now John......
Here is a picture of the mark on a 69Z survivor I referred to earlier.
Notice the mark is just to the left of the right side stripe and the mark is in the middle of the OAL.
I have the pic too large so you have to arrow it to the left to just see the white of a stripe.
Very similar to what James showed.

Eddie, the trunk w/s did vary in the start/stop position but most of the NOR cars I have looked at did not normally have the start/stop ends of the w/s at the latch. It was usually left of the latch. Just my observations and what others have said over the years.

It's normally a light grease pencil mark (IIRC, not red). Fisher used it to center the trunk ws. Not very visible, per design.
And very rarely is the ws truly centered.

I have seen this faint mark on two survivors, a 68Z and a 69Z. Both of those cars as Kurt mentioned had a faint mark approximately halfway between the center of trunk and the right upper side. I assumed it was some type of mark for cutting the w/s to a desired length as both marks seemed to be at a half point of total length.

Thanks everyone. I am leaning towards AMD for quarters, tail pan and floor... I got positive reviews on AMD from a lot of folks around here as well.

I brought the L78 to the body shop last week.  So the fun begins...   :D
Joe, sure its in good hands but assume you have good knowledge of the body shop. Many do great work but have seen first hand work that was not correct or sat due to being busy with insurance work. Many do not have jigs, or the knowledge to install to a factory look.

Whats odd is I just bought a set off ebay that are in the gm boxes, both marked   #  3957935   ,and inside were the emblems with part #681 and #682

Were the emblems NOS or possibly used? What a surprise that must have been or were they advertised that way?
Good buy.... :)

just wondering how much value I would add to my car if I put the vinyl top back on. Here is a link to the car I bought.

First off Danny, Congratulations on what appears to be a very nice addition to that L78 Nova.
Yes, I agree the black vinyl top would look great and be in many of us purist minds more correct/original but for now, I'd suggest just sitting on it and enjoying the car. Yea, maybe its something down the road but for now just let the car settle in and see where your mind takes you a year from now. Just my .02 but again, congrats Danny!

My '69 Chevrolet P&A list 3957935 for the left side and 3957936 for the right side.

On a side note; the "Z/28" emblems for a '68 Z28 are 3947011 for the left side and 3947012 for the right side.  On 2-15-69 these emblems cost a whopping $3.65 each!

Paul
Hey Paul, I have a pair of 68 Z/28 emblems purchased in the 80's and same thing as the 69 Z emblems, one part # for both sides. Might have been around $10 then.... Darn inflation!

I remember in the 80's when you purchased them they were the same part #. Noticed no one had responded so dug out my GM April, 1983 parts book and it shows only #3957935 with no designation to left or right and states two (2) are needed. Not sure exactly when it started. Who's got a 70's GM parts book out there to assist with the question  ;D

Originality / Re: 12/1/67 Stamped DF wheels used in Production?

Good info Bill and thank you! It's interesting to note the different forms of DF wheels used during the 68 model year.

Looks like they were being used even before the 50's! If those are casting dates, 1952 and 1928!!

Ed

They were on our 68 and had undercoating on them which protected them I guess. Would assume the #'s are some type of mold identification, etc., or they really had a severe problem with first in first out. :) Where's John, bet he knows!
