Originality / Re: 69 Z28 fuel pump
« on: April 09, 2013, 01:06:33 AM »
I can look if mine has the original, is the fuel pump stamped somewhere externally where I could see the number on the motor?
They are stamped but if standing on the right side of the car looking down it would be up top to the left or upper back section which is impossible to see without a small mirror when the pump is installed (underneath the car trying to place a mirror in that top section and shine light additionally). The few judges I have talked to look for the correct AC on the pump as again the # is difficult to see even with a small mirror & flashlight. Been there done that! :)

Here is a list at team camaro of 68Z's ownership. I started a thread a couple years ago and know some have been sold off, etc. but was a sizeable list of 68 Z/28's. And of course quite a few team camaro members are CRG members. I know of one CRG member who has a 01C 68Z as his engine was built the same day as ours, 12/21/67

Looks OK Angelo but only one pic of stamping around stem. One has curb rash as he noted but the dates should work well IMO.
He has a reserve and maybe he has run them before but the price might really change in the last few hours/minutes...
Good luck

Maybe there is a third Gen website you can go to and reminisce about that one......
In another 30 years maybe you will get that 84 as well?
nastyz28 has very active later gen groups

The side opposite the painters station is all ventillation.  Could have been later 60s - looks like a short leg water pump though. Great discussion - brings back memories.
Appears to be a water curtain in front of them. :)
Was hoping John or someone in the know could answer my earlier question concerning how the big blocks are shown being painted, i.e. hanging by the intakes carb bolt holes. Earlier question- Noticed the BB's were hung by manifold where the carb bolts on. Was that just for cast iron intakes or did they use that process for all Big Blocks? Is it safe or correct to assume SB's were completed the same way at Tonawanda? Was the same hanging process used at Flint?

I don't remember the paint line looking like that John - any idea when that pic was taken?

I don't recall exactly, but it was late 60's-early 70's; BB's and SB's painted on the same line.

Excellent information! Noticed the BB's were hung by manifold where the carb bolts on. Was that just for cast iron intakes or did they use that process for all Big Blocks? Is it safe or correct to assume SB's were completed the same way at Tonawanda? Was the same hanging process used at Flint?

Received my new mirrior from Paragon yesterday. Did the soak in gas trick to get the old one out, came out very easy. New one dropped right in and looks very good. The whole process took 7 days and $23.50 from MI to KS.    :)
Many of us have used mineral spirits and that works well. Kinda funny when you see the mirror is a mirror on both sides when out. I pulled our glass mirror so we can re-chrome.

Something is definitely wrong there - look at all of the paint on the ex manifold!

Tonawanda painted big-blocks with exhaust manifolds bolted on. I have noted other pics with them showing lots of paint. In the early 70's that process was changed I believe JohnZ noted due to the workers complaints of paint burn off.

The Mustang will never be second to anything.

Interesting as I always thought they were 2nd to Shelby Mustangs! And by comparable product, the Camaro. :)

Thanks John!   That's new information to me, and beneficial knowing that.  I assume your explanation referred to the Norwood Fisher body plant?
What about the paint on the front fenders, hood, valence, and other parts painted in the Norwood assembly plant??
Were those parts painted with an automated system? or manually painted?  I'm curious because the 'inner' portions of my front fenders (the part inside the engine compartment) didn't seem to get full coverage; as if the painter sprayed from above and the under areas where there were contours, didn't get much paint...  Is that typical of factory painted fenders on a '69 Camaro?
Maybe Steve S. has some information on that as well from his survivor/original judging activity?

The Fisher side at Norwood had the recip guns, but the Chevrolet side didn't - the Chevy paint shop was all manual, thus subject to more process variation.

John, is it true that one issue the Fisher side had with the recip guns if paint change (switching colors) was made between cars and a little too late from the more inexperienced relief workers the resultant color was just a tad off on the frontal area? I've read that was/might have been one reason the Chevrolet side had inspectors to inspect incoming bodies from the Fisher side with paint chips! And in the first gen life through the 1969 model year was the Chevrolet side still dependent upon experienced painters/tinters to mix paint for matching?

John, I do not recall ever seeing a 67-69 without them. Our 01B has them and they are re-installed as they were in great shape with the part # very evident.

I'm not a huge new generation camaro lover and maybe some of that sentiment stems from owning a first gen but GM apparently has done many things correct when one observes Camaro sales, i.e. bottom line, the results. I'm fortunate to have a grandson (one of 6) who drives and he and his friends come over to our place often. They all seem to really dig the new camaro's and the handliing thing is just as important as the get up and go. We can call it fat, too wide, whatever but that rascal is flying around a road course and it's going to catch an eye from many.  Personally I like the wider/lower look and when hitting speeds of 190 you better have some features designed into the car for aerodynamics.  We have a C6 Z06 and that LS7 engine rocks with performance as the torque band is unreal as it pulls from start to finish with no added turbo's etc.  I think they hit the nail correct using that motor and it will sell well along with having no engine engineering and development cost. Things change over time and I love those 427 and larger small blocks. The LS motors are even becoming the hot ticket for rodders, resto-mods, and touring cars. Another advantage with the LS7 is going down the highway in 6th gear doing 60mph at 1200 rpm and no downshift for speeding up (that torque) while easily obtaining 25 to 26 miles per gallon.
