Originality / 67-69 Shock Retainer/washer
« on: February 04, 2012, 12:59:09 PM »
I thought this was one of our original shock retainers (one on the right).
Still has the trunk spatter on it but it measures 1.5" in diameter??
Other originals I have have similar design bur measure in that 1 3/8" ballpark (1.390").
Now I'm not so sure it was off our 68 but have no idea where else it would have come from???
Has anyone observed or have these 1.5" shock retainers/washers?
The AIM calls out the same part# shock retainer for the front and rear shocks.

Originality / Documenting 68 Camaro Fasteners & Hardware
« on: February 03, 2012, 02:43:55 AM »
In an effort to determine what would normally be considered the correct fastener for different applications this thread is being developed to coincide with similar threads for 67 (hopefully) and 69 Camaro fasteners.  For a preliminary on how this came about please review the birth in thread http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=9074.0 and http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=9130.0
This effort will need the support and creation of sorts of a "team" and I have volunteered to be the team scribe and a team member. This could be huge in benefits for all of us and for years to come. Let the investigation and data collection begin.
Please help  ;D

Originality / Painting 12 bolt Differential detail Questions
« on: November 27, 2011, 02:40:39 AM »
When the differentials were painted originally I've read and researched they were of course painted as a completed assembly with the emergency cables attached but no brake lines and that the yoke and emergency cables were protected from paint with a cardboard sleeve or some type of protection.
1. Was the wheel cylinder brake fluid bleeder installed after paint or before. Other words, should it be bare metal or painted? I assumed bare metal but found traces of black paint on one of ours.
2. On the emergency brake cables, how much black paint was normally on them?
Thanks for any assistance as we need to get this rear finished ;D

Originality / 12 bolt Yokes Slinger
« on: October 13, 2011, 11:06:28 AM »
The yoke attached to the rear end has a large cup style washer that we always called a "slinger", and assume it got called that since it slings the crap away from getting in the seal area. I would like to find a slinger that is in better condition than the donor I have currently as that one has pits. The orig. owner changed rear gears back and forth (put the originals back in before selling) and the slinger has been gone since 1974 or before, hence the need for a donor.  And if forced to keep what I have and move forward I'm not sure what finish they came from the factory with.
1. Can anyone help me with obtaining a nice used or new slinger?
2. What type of finish did that slinger come with new? Natural, phosphate, etc.????
Appreciate any help and thank you!

General Discussion / Need help on orig. 68 std Gas Cap
« on: August 20, 2011, 02:58:36 AM »
I do not have the orig. gas cap and have no idea where it is but I did compare one NOS cap to what I believe to be a Nova gas cap. Notice in the pics the Nova cap (kinda of a white) has a much wider piece that is used to open/close and the underside has the screws with a plate but the NOS has no plate. On the Nova cap the center part of the underside is riveted to the plate and is held in place by the two screws going to the exterior handle where the NOS center part is riveted to the large round sheet-metal piece. By the way, that rivet process causes the large round sheet-metal plate to be warped. Other words, it does not lay flat whereas the Nova cap does.
Can anyone confirm what their orig. gas cap handle width is? The what I believe to be a Nova cap is approximately .670" wide and was wondering if an orig. 68 gas cap had the same handle. Also would greatly appreciate a picture/info of what the orig. is like underneath of the part that goes in the filler neck. Is it similar to the one with the screws/plate? Again, pictures of an original would be greatly appreciated. I completed some searches and found many posts concerning RS caps and 69 caps but not std..

Originality / Original rubber brake hoses
« on: July 18, 2011, 01:08:34 AM »
Saw some NOS flexible rubber brake lines advertised for a Chevelle that had the SAE info in red with long red dashes 180 degrees from the red SAE info. I trashed the front disc brake hoses on our 68 z/28 but had the rear one. After a little cleaning the red SAE information and dashes were very prevalent. I do not recall reading about this before and was wondering what information might be available. Here are pics of our orig. rear brake hose. Is this new info to anyone else or was it just me again ;D

General Discussion / Picture of actual random inspection audit sheet
« on: April 08, 2011, 01:37:14 AM »
A good friend is restoring his 69 SS396 Nova and they found this under the carpet. Its dated Dec. 7, 1968 and was wondering if anyone had found this in their camaro. Per JohnZ it is a random audit inspection sheet which I would think would be not that common to find. Anybody else find one? Can you post a picture or supply and information?

General Discussion / Gas tank strap question
« on: April 01, 2011, 01:31:18 AM »
We are restoring our 68 and recently I was reviewing the condition of the orig. gas tank straps. Except for one being a little bent from  when it was taken off it seemed like they would be quite usable but thought about just purchasing some new ones but one thing jumped out, that being the offset of the bulge. Maybe it had to do with how they were put in a press (process variation) but both have a very similar offset. Looking at one set of reproduction this bulge seemed to be in the middle. Is this normal or did they in fact have that much process variation that straps varied from having the bulge anywhere from the centerr to being way off center?

General Discussion / 12 Bolt Paint Process Questions
« on: March 22, 2011, 01:12:04 AM »
Our 12 Bolt is re-built and I'm in the process of final prep prior to paint. When the factory masked off the yoke was the slinger (between yoke and housing) masked off alsol? Were the brake cylinders attached during this paint process or put on after paint?
Thank You!

General Discussion / Oval floor pan plugs-stamped?
« on: January 22, 2011, 02:52:09 AM »
I was doing some research and found this thread ( http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=2438.0;all ) discussion on floor pan plugs and stampings. I personally took our plugs out of our 68 Camaro and found zero trace of any stamp showing on the bottom side. Was this something that started on 69 Camaros or not all plates were stamped or???????

Restoration / Tie rod sleeve and bolts/nuts
« on: January 20, 2011, 02:52:57 AM »
Car-68 z/28  I have looked at several restored cars, pictures, & searched trying to determine the correct finish for the tie rod theaded sleeve, the two small brackets that go around each sleeve and the bolt nut finish. Seems the sleeve itself is natural and the bolts/nuts were not dark phosphated, and the rings the bolts go through for tightening are natural. Have noticed several variations on how these have been done in restorations and need help. Having the hardware correct is the hardest part to get correct up to this point.  ;D
Would appreciate some expert advice as I'm all ears.....

We are restoring our 68 Z/28 and just yesterday I was checking out the ol' NOS body mounts I have. Some were purchased in the late 70's early 80's, and others maybe mid 80's to early 90's. I posted this information on the restoration thread going on in camaro.net but thought it would be worthwhile to communicate here additionally as I'm sure many have noted this but probably many like myself had no clue.  First example up is #3901361 position 3 under the seat. The picture shows two NOS same part number cushions but note the differences. The one on the right is the oldest of the two. Is this old news or ??? Learn everyday ;D

And a close up of the older version. Assumed it was a supplier change or some significant change as the years went by but same part #.

Now part 2 of changes! I could be totally incorrect but thought bushing #3928380 (under firewall) was later superseded with 14008366 but look at the differences between these two. Some significant differences......

General Discussion / Camaro Hi Performance-thank you Jerry!
« on: December 11, 2010, 02:09:09 AM »
Was down yesterday picking up some parts that Jerry and his band of merrymen had restored. Great looking 610 intake, our 266 distributor and bell housing, a WT 346 master cylinder Jerry located for me and restored, and some fixing and rework on our air cowl plenum. The orig. owner purchased the now famous or sought after air cowl plenum air cleaner and installed headers because he told me he was a huge Mark Donahue fan. But our air cowl plenum was a 67 version and not a 68 we desired for the restoration. After much, and I mean much internal debate and reviews I decided to have Camaro Hi Performance put the bump in for the smog pump. Yea, I know the smog pump set up cannot be used but still wanted the bump in to be period correct for our 68. The other issue was our plastic duct had the bottom corner broken off from a over tightening at some point. The fix looks, well it looks like it never happened. And the bump, you be the judge ;D Huge thanks to Jerry and Camaro Hi Performance......

Restoration / Y55 Battery- Need the yellow circled battery caps
« on: October 04, 2010, 05:56:56 PM »
I purchased in the early 80's an original Y55 battery for our 68 Z. It is still in the orig. box and recently I pulled it off the shelf and looked at the caps that came with it. The still bagged caps have the red circled instead of the yellow circled. I have heard of people having to paint them but are they available anywhere or reproduced? And if you have to paint them what paint/process is utilized?
thanks in advance,

The top front section of the sub-frame has three holes of which normally the middle one is utilized for mounting the radiator support. Today I noticed on our sub-frame it surely appears the front hole location was used. You can clearly see where the washer/rubber mount were as that area is pretty clean but slight pitting around the area that the washer/rubber mount did not cover. Sure they put three holes there for a reason so can only assume some cars had different holes used for some reason. Anybody run into this or? How did they determine what hole to use? Started to mount the front fenders and placed the rad. support in the middle mtg. hole but noticed the rad. support seemed to be leaning forward and then noticed it sure looks like the front mtg. holes were used.
thanks in advance,
