Originality / 67/68 4 speed back up harness Cowl Location
« on: January 28, 2014, 11:55:49 PM »
Well today I’m at a total loss on what or how the back up light switch was hooked up. Why, because where the AIM calls out a .920 to .940 diameter hole to be drilled (dimple location) there is no hole in my cowl. I think I found the dimple or at least it seems to be correct and the NOS underdash mat has a one inch or so hole located where the dimple is. Can someone please show me what they have on their 4-speed 67 or 68 Camaro? When I purchased this car over 30 years ago it was already tore apart so assembly has been, let’s just say FUN.... LOL......
Some references: What the AIM calls out for 3C which I think is for the back up harness-

What seems to be my dimple (hard to see in a pic but prominent in person) that has no hole located under the ground strap and zinc screw-

The connection between the two harnesses that is supposed to connect at the firewall-

Restoration / Y55 Battery Warranty Label/Sticker
« on: June 19, 2013, 01:01:02 AM »
Posted this on my build thread but thought it might be beneficial to post here. I purchased an original Y55 battery in the early 80's (was a lot of money even then) but the warranty tag had years 1977 to 1980 listed. I wanted to fix this and started to search for anyone who makes these labels. Luckily I found this guy named Tom who reproduced warranty stickers for R59 and many other batteries but not Y55. I inquired and Tom communicated back that he'd never been asked to do a Y55 but had been wanting to complete at sometime. Well within a few weeks I had my Y55 stickers. This tag will look great on our original Y55 battery and assists with great detail!  If anyone is interested in obtaining one of these tags they are $16 plus $1 shipping. Contact Tom at mc71454@hotmail.com Like us Tom is a car guy and has some COOL machines.
Our original Y55 in the box.

The original Y55 with it's original warranty label from years 1977 to 1980.

The repro warranty label/sticker Tom made for our application with a Jan./68 build.

Restoration / 68 AIM Page 151 #3857706
« on: February 08, 2013, 11:59:28 PM »
I've spent time trying to figure out the best way to set these battery cable clips (68AIM page 151) #3857706. What is the best way to expand (set) the rivet type end that goes in the sub-frame? The other brake and fuel line clips that had a push rivet (Part #3881339) were easy since the internal portion was tapered and a tapered punch expanded the rivet. What has anyone found to work well with this type of clip?
I bet JohnZ would know what was used back in the day and maybe that would help with how to do it in the 21st century. :)

One I just set in position (correct I believe) but not expanded/set!

Originality / Correct starter restoration
« on: January 30, 2013, 10:55:59 PM »
I have noticed on some original (survivor) starters the end cover (not the nose end) seems to be phosphated and not painted black similar to the main black body noted to be 30-60% gloss black. Since I do have a picture to post I found a thread where JohnZ showed a picture of a 67 Corvette starter that displays exactly what I'm referring to. http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=4562.0 What is the consensus on the end cap, 30-60% gloss black or? The two screws that hold that cap on seem to be normally phosphated. Is that correct?

Originality / Harmonic Balancer Bolt & Pulley Bolts Finish
« on: December 13, 2012, 12:58:20 AM »
Our original Harmonic Balancer Pulley bolts sure seemed to be zinc coated yet the bolts advertised as correct are phosphate.
Were they zinc or phosphate?
The other bolt that had me not sure was the harmonic balancer bolt/thick washer! The inside of our bolt had little if any signs of being a phosphated bolt but again repro's are. Is phosphate correct or?

Thanks in advance & happy Holidays & new Year to ALL.......

Restoration / Console bracket & U-joint
« on: November 08, 2012, 03:50:20 AM »
Trying to determine what I should do with the console bracket studs and nut, meaning what finish should they be? It would be easy to assume the two threaded pcs. were natural but not sure. Need help :)

I have one original U-joint or believe it to be that was at the trans yoke. The rear yoke had been changed. I'm trying to find a replacement either in a good used one that could be restored, a NOS one, or a replacement that is similar to the original in configuration. I have not found any current U-joints that resemble the originals but was hoping someone might be able to assist. Need for our restoration.
Suggestions????

Originality / Small Block Spark Plug Wire Retainers Painted Black?
« on: October 24, 2012, 11:40:02 PM »
Working to finalize items on our 68Z motor (paint scheme) and noticed from my old supply of parts I had two original spark plug wire retainers that were painted black. I believe both of these to be original but not sure what small block they might have come off of. Were these or certain years painted black? They seem like they might have been dipped??????

Originality / 12/1/67 Stamped DF wheels used in Production?
« on: October 03, 2012, 02:33:51 AM »
Back in 2005 I was introduced to at the time my first dated 12/1/67 DF wheel via ebay. I was so taken by it I even printed off and documented the results. Since then, I have noted several DF wheels over the years with the same date stamping. Even have three of them in my DF collection! Interesting to note all of the examples I have seen have a 12/67 inner hub date as well. Does anyone have information concerning whether any of these were used in production? Note the K1 location & always a light stamp.

General Discussion / MacB's gorgeous 69 in Hemmings Muscle Machines
« on: August 03, 2012, 04:20:07 PM »
September issue of Hemmings Muscle Machines has Mac and his lovely wife Shelly's 69 hugger orange Camaro displayed on page 12. Mac and Shelly won top honors at the "Goodguys/HMM" Nashville Nationals, held May 18-20th. Many of us had the pleasure of meeting them at the June Frederick camaro show.
Congrats Mac!

Recently I had the good fortune to come across an original 68 Wide Tread Tire and DF wheel that
I feel is unmolested and totally original. Wanted to share and also learn from the valve stem as its
different from what I thought I knew about.  All I ever read about were Dill valve stems!
I believe the tire is dated Jan68? It came from the original owner of the 68Z/28. Micro weight is like new!
Plan on using this as our spare but leaving it the way it is. What do you think?

Oh, and I checked the valve stem length of several DF wheels along with other Corvette rally wheels (68)
and they all stick out approximately 1.300". Opps, wrong length!

Originality / Brake & Gas Liine Clip 3881339
« on: July 20, 2012, 01:13:55 PM »
Believe all the 3881339 clips in kits have a type of reddish clay color clip but most restorations observed have that clip
painted black. What was the correct color?

Originality / Speedo cable Clips
« on: July 10, 2012, 03:18:15 AM »
Both the 68 & 69 AIM call out 3 speedo clips. 68 AIM UPC M20 A6
Both the 68 & 69 AIM under UPC 0, A8.5 & A9 respectively, call out two holes to be drilled.
Our 68 did not have 3 speedo clips and two other 69's I'm aware of only have two.
Just wondering if two clips is a common sight among NOR Camaro's.
The other thing found today on a NOR May built Z/28 was a difference in the two clips.
We took the one out near the front of the trans tunnel and it is a totally different design
from the one on the cowl even though the AIM calls out 377324 for all three.
I know of one 68 that only had one clip! What do you have on your 4-speed cars?
Here are the two clips!

Was looking at old car pics for sale at Carlisle last week and ran across this old picture and what surprised me was the 68 Corvette. You can see it was a parade prior to a Nascar race of some kind. Was this a race Saturday before the Indy 500? Just wondering if the Corvette was some type of pre-production show car or? Would seem odd to have all those 69 pace cars together a year later???? Anyone know? Gotta love those ol' pictures.  ;D

Originality / Original Battery Hold Down Clamp
« on: May 04, 2012, 01:29:38 AM »
Many of our cars over the years have had the battery hold down clamp replaced and neither of our Camaro's had originals but our 67 Corvette did and it had been dipped in black paint so I assumed it was factory. Last week at Carlilse I asked a NCRS C2 judge (judges primarily late model C2's) I know if in fact Corvette battery hold down clamps were black and he told me yes. Additionally, I have looked at two 69 survivors and both those clamps had black paint or remnants of black paint. I also have two additional original clamps and both of them have black paint or remnants of. Restored cars I have looked seem to normally have a phosphate battery clamp which they were according to research but I'm thinking they were additionally painted black. Here are my three examples. Sorry, do not have pics of the 69 survivor clamps. Notice the black paint remnants and 'K' stamping on two pieces. So how about it, were those battery hold down clamps black from the factory on our Camaro's? So check your cars and please let me know if you have an orig. clamp and if it seemed to be painted black.

First off some history of discussions of a not too long ago thread- http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=7432.0
Yes I could have added to that thread but thought it might be more beneficial to add facts and work to find out what might have been different configurations. Here's why!
Numerous past discussions have discussed if the inside rear window & package tray mldg. was painted with suede paint similar to the dash or a satin to semi-gloss black. Seems the majority state just black but there were some notable exceptions from Camaro owners and a couple very knowledgeable people. I thought ours was just a semi-gloss black but upon careful inspection our originals seem to be clearly painted with both suede and a satin/semi-gloss black. I realize someone might say they could have been changed since leaving the factory, and yes anything is possible but I believe these to be unmolested pieces as everything in that area was original and typical except this. The backside of the mouldings had surface rust/scale and had no paint. This would indicate they were attached to the car prior to painting. The picture might not be the best but if you could see first hand they without a doubt look like the suede was partially put on after black. Has anyone else seen this?
Thoughts?
