Originality / 68/69 Door Mirror Gasket w/CAMARO script
« on: December 07, 2023, 04:30:19 PM »
Amazing at times how we continue to learn things about our cars we didn't know prior. An excellent example brought to my attention at last year's 2022 MCACN involved noting a '69 Camaro door mirror gasket that had the word "camaro" molded in. My mind raced to our 68Z restoration as I thought I had carefully reviewed parts for details but unfortunately I do not remember even having the original door mirror gasket to review back then but was determined to find out more. First step was checking my good friends '68 07D and late '69 09D survivors if they had the camaro script door mirror gasket and they did. You do have to look for it as the mirror normally covers 50% to 70% of the CAMARO script and in some cases only part of the "C" can be observed due to both mirror length variation and other tolerance build up's and mounting processes. From reviews of survivors and talking to experts it appears the gasket used did have the "camaro" script.  I'm curious to know if this was common or the norm used during the 68/69 model run. Can anyone with paint survivors chime in on what your car has?

General Discussion / Checking on our Mike S team member
« on: July 18, 2022, 11:09:06 PM »
I’ve been working on a book the last two winters and Mike has helped me with pics and info which is much appreciated. Approximately a month ago I emailed Mike but no response which was not liked him prior and have not noticed any of his MikeS posts. I’m hoping all is ok..... Anyone know anything? I started this as another friend was asking me same questions as he’s not responding to emails or text.

Originality / Short Spoiler Long Stud vs. Long Spoiler Long Stud
« on: March 10, 2021, 11:37:33 PM »
I'm trying to determine if the 68 short spoiler #3916633 all had a long stud with what JohnZ stated the plant called a "dog point" meaning the end of the long stud was undercut at end and the long 69 #3949798 spoiler came equipped with a long stud threaded to the end.

Can you please open those trunk lids and check configuration on that long spoiler stud? Undercut on end or threaded to stud end?
Thanks everyone,

Restoration / AC43 Original vs. AC43 reproduction
« on: June 10, 2020, 02:52:56 AM »
Recently I purchased a set of the AC43 reproduction spark plugs for $59.95 to compare to originals. I must say after installation one would have a difficult time knowing original or repro, as the differences are in the spring washer and script & knurl on the lower barrel of the spark plug. Script on the originals is "AC SPARK PLUG FLINT MICH MADE IN U.S.A." Repro plug on right side!

General Discussion / My photobucket restored
« on: January 14, 2020, 03:37:36 AM »
Knowing many review Skip’s amazing 69 z/28 and 68 RS Z28, both in the original survivor section along with my extensive 68Z build thread on team camaro I’ve recently worked with Facebook to restore (yes it costs some lol, but worth the effort).
Enjoy and hope it continues to assist us going forward.

Restoration / Gutting Original Y55
« on: April 14, 2019, 04:58:20 PM »
I added this information to my build thread on Team Camaro but thought I'd list it here for future use and if anyone has any good suggestions for battery to stuff inside the Y55 case.
The what was NOS Y55 battery I had added juice and charged in the spring of 2016 gave out on me when I tried to start the car to load this past MCACN. Geez, only 2 plus years, maybe I should have gutted it to begin with.  Luckily I had another Y55 but a later version that only has “DELCO” script and not the more correct “DELCO ENERGIZER” wording to install for the MCACN show. I did make several checks on that battery but it would not hold a charge so knew what the next step was. Was not looking forward but it was time to work to gut the battery so another smaller one could be placed in the gutted housing. There have been articles written about this that were given to me from a NCRS friend and a friend had gutted his original Y77 (Skip’s orange Z/28) so I had some information but one still gets a little goosey when you start to drill, cut, and remove the batteries guts. If you ever do this be patient and plan on spending several hours.

First thing other than safety items like glasses and rubber gloves was to wear old clothes knowing removing the battery acid might cause havoc. After removal of the battery acid I used baking soda to neutralize the acid removed and also mixed baking soda in warm water to pour in the cells which I did 4 different times working to neutralize the inside of the battery.

Took some 1X3 lumber pieces and make a simple frame to support the battery top posts while I have it upside down doing surgery and taped off both battery and frame to protect battery surface.

Placed some wire ties around circumference and made as tight as possible for support. Tools used were drill, Dremel with cutting blade, and assortment of hand tools. Marked one inch in and drilled corner holes and then the Dremel cutting blade to start the surgery.

What you see when you remove the cut out bottom and now the long process of removing all this junk.

After several hours its finally cleaned out and now to find what battery I’m going to use knowing some more clean out of internal ribbing will be needed, but the worse is over. Any suggestions on battery to use? The NCRS guys have used Miata batteries! More info forthcoming as we finish this part of the project.

General Discussion / Bloomington Gold adding Camaro's for 2019
« on: December 30, 2018, 12:45:32 AM »
This is a hot topic over at the Corvette Forum. No judging as of this 2019 but possibly in the future. The bad news for some might be the same weekend is the Frederick, MD Camaro Nationals, and Chevrolet Nationals in Carlisle.

General Discussion / Trying to find 69Z 124379N621880
« on: September 06, 2018, 02:20:31 AM »
Assisting car friend acquaintance (Dan) to find the 69 Z/28 with vin 124379N621880. It was sold several times during 2017 so this Z/28 with aforementioned vin exists. Looking for any help in finding and contacting the current owner due to Dan having the original block which he recently added to the CRG orphan list. The block is factory stamped with partial vin “19N621880” and DZ engine assembled March 19, 1969.
This Z/28 is Burnished Brown, White vinyl roof and stripes with white vinyl interior and was advertised with a recent restoration when it was sold at an auction last year.
Believe last known sales was at St Louis Car Museum And Sales, lot # RST-714704. Thanks in advance for any possible assistance.  The only goal here is to earnestly try to get the engine back with the Z/28 it was born with.

Originality / Original door mirror fame
« on: December 13, 2017, 09:25:41 PM »
During Legends judging I had a demerit since our original door mirror had no mold line in the mirror frame but I had had it re-chromed so it was assumed including me, that during preparation the mold line had been removed. The mirrored glass is dated October 1967. I had taken out the dated glass by soaking in mineral spirits for a couple days. Seemed unlikely they would have buffed that seam out but at the time the only thing I could think of at the time.
Our mirror base showing the underneath part # and the top area normally seeing a mold line.

My assumption that the mold line was taken off at the chrome platters kind of changed or at least cautioned when I observed a very original un-molested Lemans Blue 21K mile 68 Z/28 being judged in that always great survivor class at this years MCACN which just happened to have the same looking door mirror base as ours.

Has anyone else seen this no seam looking door mirror base? To be honest I’ve never looked at mirrors on cars prior looking to see if the mirror had a mold line or not but I am now. Thanks in advance for any information.

Originality / 1968 Z/28 distributors 1111266 to 1111467
« on: July 15, 2017, 11:38:48 PM »
1967 Z/28’s had 1111266 distributors and apparently large batches were made as many early 68 Z/28’s have them including at least three CRG members (Randy, Paul, and myself). This is an effort to help establish how long into the 68 model year were 266’s used and when did 467’s start. According to a GM memo in Jerry’s book 266’s were to be exhausted before 467’s went into use. Did it happen? When did the 467 start to show up? Since the distributor was put in at the Flint engine plant please give the assembly date of your engine, 266 or 467 and date code of distributor. Information from http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=1539.0;all and here http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=7371.msg48710#msg48710

Originality / Original Born with Battery Trays LOS NOR
« on: January 16, 2017, 10:12:27 PM »
Subject- Original born with Battery Trays found on 67-69 Camaro’s from LOS & NOR.
Realize many CRG members spend time on other Camaro websites but not everybody and thought this was a worthwhile subject to make sure it is documented and hopefully placed in the “Pictures and information of original details” section. Information on how this subject matter came up from MCACN show can be found in my build thread:
http://www.camaros.net/forums/133-build-projects/182584-time-another-68-z-28-restored-85.html
Special thank you to Steve who was able to show me examples of what is normally observed while inspecting original survivor type Camaro’s in Vintage Certification. Examining what is unique to original born with compared to GM service replacements include some things that can be seen and some not when installed.
Most noticeable is a tab where the battery hold down clamp bolts on. Please note I have not seen this tab on any service replacement battery tray to date and have observed some old ones on ebay for sale. A few examples including one Steve posted-

Darrell’s 03D 68 NOR L78

Danny’s 05E 68 NOR Z/28

Jerry’s 07C 68 NOR Z/28

Skip’s 07D 68 NOR Z/28

Steve showed this 01C 69 LOS

06A 69 by Yenko’s SSL78

Skip’s 09D 69 NOR Z/28

Now compare that tab area to this NOS service replacement. Different design!

The service replacements have the nuts used to bolt the tray in place from the bottom oriented straight. On every original born with tray so far each of the two nuts are oriented the same but each one is oriented differently from the other (see 01C 69 for good view).  Look at the tab of the examples and note how each one’s tab tapers from one end to the other.
Can anyone add to this? Here is a simple chart of examples which includes Jon's 67 low mileage take off which has correct oriented nuts.
67               Jon’s 1100 mile take off-No Tab- Has angled nuts
67 11A LOS Has tab but not as pronounced as many. Robert
68 03D NOR Has tab Darrell
68 05E LOS Has tab Danny
68 06A NOR Has tab DaveV
68 07C NOR Has tab JerryG
68 07D NOR Has tab Skip
69        LOS  Has tab Mike1971
69        NOR Has tab Mike1971
69 11A NOR No tab Has angled nuts & orig. battery hold down clamp. Noyenko
69               Has tab but not as pronounced as many. Noyenko
69 01C NOR Has tab Jude
69 02D NOR Has tab SteveS
69 03B NOR Has tab SteveS
69 09A NOR Has tab (late built) Robert
69 09D NOR Has tab (late built) Skip
