So Paul, I read that thread also. What letter would you pick if you had my car? I am thinking "W".. D

Danny, if I had your car, I'd go with "X".  I've notice many survivors here in the Bay Area with April build dates with "X" plates.  As per reply #9 (mine) in the CRG thread I linked above, "I looked at a 1968 Rally Sport (04D) survivor and it's original California black plates are XABxxx."
