Lane, thanks for posting the photos. I'm sorry we weren't able to meet up over the weekend. I had my middle brother and my kids with me
and we did not spend too much time in any one place. Never made it up to the corkscrew or the outside part of the track. I'm glad to see
you had an opportunity to meet Chad though. They sure had the Trans-Am cars packed in like jelly beans, which I don't think anybody liked.
I suppose that's the new reality of how things are going to be since they expanded the amount of race groups for the weekend. I saw that
they added speed readouts on top of the bridge on the main straight, which was pretty neat. Saw quite a few cars in the 120+ mph range.

No worries Jon...wanted to hear more about your car....I saw a couple of people that looked like you however ;)
The speedo was neat and the large TV screen on top of the tower worked this year as well with live feed.
The first picture I took is from our camp at Rainey curve fwiw...

I saw the Yunick car go in..wondered what was wrong...looks like they were lucky from your of the Penske cars also went in with a lot of smoke...not sure if they ran later or not..

Here's a few pics I took over the weekend....

1) Morning session before the unfortunate incident for #77 Epsman
2) Leaders- #64 Chad
3) Leaders- #64 Chad
4) #67- John
5) Chad and his "Lead Crew Chief" that claimed the driver as his son :) - my son Alec got a lesson on bleeding JL8 calipers...I think Alec wondered what happens at the other end of his foot after hearing "up and down"...
6) Alec enjoyed the Mecum auction Friday afternoon and got to see his mug on the DVR when he got home..

I didn't see John with his car nor did I run into Jon in the crowd...

And finally a short video..and yes I will keep my day job :).

Hadn't thought about it much but Chad reminded me that these cars are doing about 120mph at start finish area (straights) and close to 130mph top speed..must be quite a ride...

The 67 console underdash wiring is p/n 71286- 70648 is without. Compare the pics.. can buy a jumper harness (I didn't look that one up) to add to the original idiot lite harness which would confirm in the future that it likely had no gauges (if anyone were too look and research).

If the car had a console you can see it on the trim tag (G)- looks like you confirmed that below... No way to know (via trim tag) if it had gauge package however- at least in my opinion.

So....add the gauges at your leisure if you wish!

The under-dash wiring harness differs between the console gauge cars and the "idiot light" version. You can compare the two by looking at the various catalogs or at a wire vendor like AAW...

Not sure if you have a harness in your car to look at?

Thanks CRG for the Trans Am forum- great photos, stories and history of these fantastic cars and their drivers- the efforts by Jon, Chad, Robert and everyone else is appreciated!

Anyone going to Monterey? I think there will be less rain than Sonoma :).

I'll be camped at Rainey curve/corkscrew 8-18 thru 8-21 if anyone wants to meet for lunch, or have a soda pop and view the races from the bottom of the corkscrew etc.

Camaros are running Saturday August 20th at 4:25.

Restoration / Re: 67 and 68 Grill rivets

I riveted the headlight door trim to doors by hand with a series of punches and drifts against an anvil with some original tubular rivets purchased on epay (with an old typewritten note they were from the the Norwood line). Didn't know AMK carried replacements- great CRG research article above on the 67/68 Grille- first I read it.

Anyway haven't had to rivet a grille and associated moldings by hand would appear impossible without a tool (I have an NOS set that needs to be done some day)...found the 2002 TC post with ref to browntool. Looks like this is the best tool for $220...,ProductNumber&ProductID=185

I am pleased with Rod's work on my Cali black plates. Have a 2nd set in process.

My car can be found in the photo section near the bottom of his photo page fwiw... ;)

Rod recently became a Giants fan after his Braves were pummeled :o

Do some research on Daryl's....some interesting threads a few years ago on the web from memory..

Although this post is part of a discussion regarding the 68 RS grille it does show a 67 with the vertical and horizontal ribs/bars level with each other.


Ah I see!

I did a search for '67 grille before I asked ..great post and the photos are helpful....sdkar may help you visualize as well.

My (2nd) NOS replacement is a '68 style- no surprise I guess...I had been told about the difference before but wasn't sure exactly what it was.
A woman backed into me in about '76 so my original is replenishing our oil supplies in a landfill somewhere in eastern Washington...looks like others had this same experience in the '68 thread.

I bought a replacement then as well...its in the attic- I'll have to look someday to see what version it is...thanks again..

The individual who did my grill had made a jig and sands the grill down to make it correct for 1967. It looks perfect. I also had the correct upper and lower grill sections riveted on. I recently sold my car and the new complete 67 grill assembly is hanging in my garage.

I've never understood the difference between the two versions..WHat is the difference and what is sanded off to make it "correct"?

Can we assume that all small blocks in 67 lacked lifting brackets?

I put a set on my resto and not looking forward to taking them off!

How were engines rigged at factory..or perhaps they were removed after use...thanks
