Trans-Am Camaros / Re: Smokey Yunick

Somebody posted this in Instagram with no further info.  Looks to be one of the '68 Camaros that Smokey ran at Bonneville along with the '67 car he had at Riverside a month or two earlier.  I see a tall '68 dash pad beside the lack of vent window and the roll bar is not a full cage like the Riverside car had.  Hopefully more get posted.

No experience with the single four top on the Offy crossram but we are looking forward to you being our guinea pig!

That is correct.  The original 61 amp alternator on the car did not have a deep groove pulley on it.  That optional alternator as an option for the Z was ultra rare, plus this car being built on the last day of LOS production, it was just delivered with what they had available.

Certainly one of the greats from his era.  Very sad news.  RIP and my condolences to his family.

Congrats on getting Tony's old car.  That's awesome that it's still around.  I love the black on red color scheme.  Best of luck restoring and racing it.

In this link at the top of the page you will find an article about the preparation of the Gerry Gregory '69 Camaro which ran four Trans-Am races during the 1969 season.  There are several pictures where you can see the roll cage bars coming through the firewall and attaching to the front subframe.

In this link you will find a '68 article from Corvette News which shows the preparation of the Penske Camaro (one of two team cars that year).  In the pictures you can see the roll cage bars coming through the firewall and attaching to the front subframe.  The SCCA GCR rule books from this era do not do a good job of telling you whether these were allowed of not, but they were.

What are they considering "period G1"?  1967 only, 1967 - 1969, or something else?

Yes, they did consult with me and I sent them pictures of a lot of details including the lettering.  It's not too bad but the worst part of the car is the rear.  The tail light protrude too much and the rear spoiler is not at the back of the deck lid like it should be.  It's still nice enough looking and I have it on my desk at work.

How close it got to accuracy with the real car?

Thanks, Nick.  Before I bought and then eventually restored my gold Z, it was a car whose history was forgotten and not cared about.  After I did it, some models got made, various articles were done, it made it into a few books, and now somebody has done kind of a clone or tribute car of it (with an obviously different number on it).  I'm glad to see the car and its history get a little more attention.

Lots of details that aren't the same.  Tribute car for sure and definitely not Trans-Am type wheels.
