Paul,

It has been my pleasure to help you in your efforts to find the correct pieces for your car. I look forward to seeing the car completed. I know Ken will do a great job for you.

You could get the wider 14x6 wheels on an L30/M20 as RPO P12 (code FC, off the top of my head) but if your car had a 350 in 1971 and has a Muncie speedo hole in the firewall, I think that tells you more than any tire sticker would.

The bolts on my low-mile '67 Z were not plated. I would guess they were supposed to be but maybe they were out of those bolts when the engine was assembled and they used the non-plated bolts. That sort of stuff happens from time-to-time.

My low-mile '67 Z has orange overspray on the fittings, the by-pass hose and the by-pass hose clamps. Less orange as you got closer to the intake manifold. Virtually no overspray on the underside of the hose.

Do these relay rods have casting or part #'s on them?

There are no casting numbers on the actual parts. I have seen NOS examples with a tag or sticker applied in the same fashion as a spring tag on a coil spring. It's a white tag with the part number on it. I had a photo of an NOS 3953221 drag link showing the sticker but I can't find it. It might be on my old computer, which is no longer hooked up.

Originality / Re: 1967 Camaro 396-325 air cleaner

Out here in CA I have seen 396-325 cars with the chrome or black lid on the open element air cleaner and also I have seen some with the snorkel air cleaner. I have not been able to determine the reason behind three different styles. I originally thought the snorkel air cleaner may have been due the CA smog equipment but then I saw many examples of the open element air cleaner on definite original CA cars.

The attached page from the 12-68 parts book (Thanks, Ed Bertrand) shows the 3 different drag links or "relay rods" as GM liked to call them. Note that the 3953221 is listed for '69 Camaros with special steering. The 3923589 is the other large bar with special surface treatment meant for the 1968 Trans-Am racers and not used in assembly line production. It is the one in the picture I posted above. 3923587 is the part number which superceded the original 3888637 number of the original small diameter drag link. By the '72 parts book, the only drag link listed was 3953221 and the notes said it superceded the 3888637 and 3923589 numbers. The small drag link was no longer available by 1972 and so anybody needing to replace that item for any reason would be doing so with the 3953221 piece. Martin, the majority of your car's history is unknown and it had been modified before you bought it.

The large drag link which came out on the '69s was part number 3953221, totally a '69 era part number, close in number to the 3953227 pitman arm which was also a '69 part. There would have been no need for GM to produce the large drag link I posted a picture of above for the Trans-Am guys in '68 if they had an off-the-shelf part ready to go that year. While some '68s may have the "221" drag link, I think they were probably retrofitted later in the car's life.

Tony,

I don't know for sure. Maybe a '68 guy will chime in.

My mistake --- I said it has a ridge where the inner tie rod attaches but what I meant is it has a ridge where the pitman arm and idler arm attaches. A view of the pitman arm side is shown below, as installed on a Trans-Am racer.

If you get a chance, post a picture of that area of the drag link. That is a very hard to find part.

Yes, that's correct. Standard belts in a red interior were black. Deluxe belts got you red webbing. I have no idea why Chevy that when they did match the standard belt colors in other interior colors.

The larger drag link did not become available until '69. Your car would have had the smaller diameter one when new. There was a HD service part available in '68 for the road racers but it is a super rare find. It has a large ridge around the area where the inner tie rod connects to the drag link.

Could that be a rare factory fiberglass hood on Estes' car? GM made a rare limited run of fiberglass cowl hoods in '68 as I understand it, and if anyone would have had access to one, it would be Pete Estes! It's common knowledge they were available through the "back door" during the Trans Am wars--just like the crossram and headers and JL-8 rear disc brakes. Or is this a myth as well, like the elusive photo of the highly-optioned black-and-gold '69 ZL-1 with a guy who looks like Michael Savage driving it?

Yes, that's a prototype fiberglass cowl induction hood. Notice the prop rod attached to the passenger side fender brace and the lack of usual hood springs. It must be being held up by somebody out of camera view. This hood was on the car when it was the pace car at the Road America Can-Am race (Elkhart Lake, WI) in August 1968.
