I seem to recall a lot of photo mistakes in this book, but I still refer to it a lot.

You are right, there are some mistakes, but I'm not sure a book was ever written that didn't have mistakes in it. I always try and read multiple sources, which helps if you are really searching for facts.

Here's another book, more of a picture book than a novel, and one which also has some mistakes in the captions but which is a great source for many very nice "period" photos of the Trans-Am cars in action. It should be on the bookshelf of any true Trans-Am fan. Many comments throughout the book are provided by drivers who raced back then.

Chad, The photos of the cars on the track are fun to look at but these shots that allow us to see more of the details of the cars are the ones I really enjoy. The '67 rule book does not discuss spindles but the '68 rule books says the spindles can be modified or changed as long as there are no changes to the track or wheelbase. I'm not sure if the Corvette spindle would do any of that. I guess that needs some research. I think it's pretty clear the car did not run that way in '67 but as for '68, I don't have an answer for that at this time. I don't recall another Camaro running with the caliper on the leading side of the axle centerline back in the old days. Anybody else aware of an example?

Chad, Thanks for taking the initiative and finding out more history on that 5 on 5" wheel. You found out some great information that I hadn't previously known and now thanks to this forum others are being educated as well. Great job!

Michigan-based Kustom Headers became the supplier of Z28 headers to GM starting in 1968.
I don't know if it was based strictly on cost but certainly that probably factored into the
equation. The most high-profile team to use Kustom Headers were the "Chaparral" Camaros
of Jim Hall.

Close-up view of a GM part number on the header flange. For some reason there are a few
different GM part numbers for these Kustom-built headers. These were also available direct
from Kustom and those are stamped KH-37 on the flange.

Some Kustom header flanges are squared-off on the ends and some are pointed.
There does not appear to be any clear reason why. Note the 4-bolt collector flanges.

Info provided in the '68 Z28 brochure. Note the different part number(s).

It was a factory job. My '67 NOR Z-28 was done pretty much identically.

I don't know if the seat designed by Solar Plastics was called the "Total Environment Plus" seat
or not but comparing these two ads, it seems like it may have been. Anybody know for sure?

A little intro from Bill Thomas, found in his '70 catalog. There are probably not enough superlatives to say
about this man who did so much for Chevrolet performance back in the late '50's and throughout the '60.

Ralph Webb's Camaro getting ready to head to the track for the '68 Meadowdale Trans-Am.  [EDIT: This car has been found and is being restored by Keith Libby.  He is planning to race it in the HTA group on the West Coast.]

Lance Pruyn hangin' the tail out in his nearly stock '67 Z-28. I believe this was taken at the car's first race
at the Lime Rock Trans-Am, 5/30/67. The car was not even a month old at the time. (built 05A)

This is the ad Mo Carter placed in the October-November 1967 issue of "Track & Traffic" magazine when he put his Z-28 up for sale.
