1968 - Orphans / Re: 1968 Z28 short block 18N403270

NMVTIS is the national public title database established by the Department of Justice after a report by the FBI concerning vehicle branding and cloning was being washed by the individual states titling and branding practices.  For instance one state may a flood brand for the titles and another state may not an instead brand it salvage or reconstructed.   If someone with a flood title no longer wanted a flood title they would only have to run it through another state that doesn't recognize the flood brand.  The National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) was established to connect the public and the individual states DMV offices with each other.

What this means for collectors is that with access to this database we can tell if a car is still registered and in what state.

This car still exists and is still registered in some state.  I ran the VIN through NMVTIS and can see that it still exists.  Run the VIN through http://www.add123.com/ and pay $4.95 and you can know the state it is registered in.  With this you can see if you can track down the current owner.

I didn't pay the $4.95 to find out the state, but it is good to know that the car exists.

General Discussion / Re: Good deal on 69 GM Overhaul Manual on ebay
« on: August 07, 2014, 03:10:14 PM »
The overhaul manual shows you how to rebuild the components of the vehicle.  The service manual shows you how to service the components and remove and reinstall the components.  The overhaul manual is not always needed, but it often has information not found in Chiltons or Motors manuals so I consider it a valuable resource to be included in the vehicle's library.

Restoration / Re: Fuel Line - '67 L30 w/Q-Jet
« on: June 16, 2014, 12:58:24 PM »
Why don't you get a pump with a 3/8" output and install a fitting for a 3/8" input on the carburetor?  That way you can take full advantage of your 3/8" fuel line.  But I agree with Darrell above, it shouldn't cause any issues leave it 5/16" from the pump to the carb.

Decoding/Numbers / Re: Zeroing in on X code start up

Since the X-codes were on the Fisher Body side of the plant and before the car got a VIN wouldn't it perhaps be more proper to analyze Fisher Body Numbers and cowl tag dates as opposed to VINs which were assigned on the Chevrolet side?

Decoding/Numbers / Re: 69 DASH VIN #
« on: May 05, 2014, 08:00:12 PM »
I agree, do not sand the block.

If you are concerned about your car, how about taking pictures of the dash VIN and cowl tag and posting them?  A picture of the dash VIN without the dash pad in place would be ideal so that the members here can evaluate the rivets and the complete VIN tag piece.

Originality / Re: Convertible visors

I believe that the visors are the color of the seats.

I have used Sealed Power/Fed. Mogul/Speed Pro camshafts in the past without issues.  This is a very common camshaft brand for stock replacement and rebuilds.

With respect to quality control, I was told about 10 years ago that there were only 1-2 camshaft makers in the world and that all of the cam grinders got their blanks from the same basic maker.  This however seemed to coincide with the reduction in zinc in the oils.  Who knows what the problems was, but the solution now seems to be more diligence and attention at the break-in and the use of appropriate oil/additive.

In conclusion, I do not know it is so much who grinds the cam, I believe that it is more the grind itself.

I saw the car in the link which is what triggered my original question.  I am not sure however that the car in that link is actually butternut, it is too hard to tell.

Here some pictures of three cars that I have on my system.

I am restoring a 1967 convertible which is coded as Y-2 and 707 yellow interior on the cowl tag.  This is the standard butternut yellow with black convertible top.  I have discovered that some 1967 Camaros came through coded Y-1 which would be a white top. I have only seen one or two photos of butternut yellow cars with white tops but they were not good quality photos.

Also, I believe that the D91 color was the same as the top color?  Is this accurate?  So if the car had a white top and D91 stripe then it would have a white stripe?

Thanks.  If anyone has any pictures or any cowl tag photos showing Y-1 and 707 interior, I would love to see them.

Thanks

General Discussion / Re: Where to find a black oil fill tube
« on: February 04, 2014, 11:48:04 AM »
Is the fill tube with the return spring tab proper for a 1967?  Or di the 1967 use a smooth tube without the return spring provision?

Mild Modifications / Re: 8.2 10 bolt differential
« on: December 19, 2013, 02:18:06 PM »
The power isn't necessarily the problem, it is how hard will you launch your car and how well will it hook on that launch.  Your car could have 500hp+ but if your rear suspension isn't set up to put all that to the ground with no or minimal wheel spin then perhaps you won't have a problem.  Fresh, well set-up Rear axles are usually only grenaded when someone abuses the car or drags it or when the car is designed to hook and not spin at all.

If you have a car that is designed to hook and not spin, then I suggest something more stout like a beefed up 12 bolt, 9" or Dana 60.  If you have a car that you like to run on the street and occasionally have fun with and you don't have an insane amount of torque or horsepower then I would say you would be fine with the 10.2.

The Cherokee's VIN is 124677N233228 and according to the cowl tag has an 06B build.  The car was for sale at Russo & Steele in Jan. 2012.  How could of it then have been at the April '67 auto show?  Or were these pictures from the 1968 show?
