The barrel nuts that stick out in the tunnel above the trans are painted or put in later after the under side was painted?I think they were put in after and are silver cad ,but not sure. thanks John

I am having the same problem.Should I ditch the smog and go with the repop factory headers??Smog and the cp look goofy together.I bet every car that received a cp also got a set of headers. The headers look real nice with the cp,looked at Jerrys pics a hundred times. The smog system is original to the car and is mint and so are the original tubes. Once the car is done there is no changing it back. Also I have loads of docs ,window sticker, order sheet ect..So anyone could see it never had headers or a cp. But 67 68 z/28 are real plain looking and the cp and headers add alot of snap under the hood. The hole is cut in the firewall already ,but the headers are in the basement . The smog tube under the cp will always look incorrect .What should I do? John

Originality / fender shims plating?
« on: November 12, 2010, 12:26:45 AM »
Removed the front clip from a very low milage rust free 68 z today and was very surprised. All of the fender shims are plated grey phosphate. I always believed the shims were plated silver zinc/cad. Did anyone else ever see gray shims? what does judging believe is correct? thanks alot John

Originality / Re: bell housing bolt painted or black phos.
« on: October 06, 2010, 12:18:32 AM »
There is another detail I picked up on. The left side spark plug heat shield brackets are painted orange on my original 68z. The front bracket has to be installed before the manifold and then painted with the engine. I have seen many many restored cars and nobody gets this correct. When I restored my brown z I painted them orange. Not one person ever said anything about them. The bolts would also be painted orange on the left side only . Details seperate the nice cars from the super nice cars! John Allouez Restorations

Originality / timing tab painted or not painted
« on: October 04, 2010, 01:42:31 PM »
Is the timing tab painted or not ? 1968 z/28 but I am sure all engines would be the same. My original 68 z engine was never painted and it is bare.  thanks John Allouez Restorations

Thanks for the info John.I thought orange would be correct because the bellhousing bolts match. If the bolt was installed later the head marking would be different.  thanks John  p.s. The paint will be chipped off.

Originality / bell housing bolt painted or black phos.
« on: September 26, 2010, 03:03:25 AM »
Here is a good question. The bell housing bolts are plated black then bolted to the block and painted orange with the block and bell housing. Is the bell housing bolt that is used to hold the starter wire harness clip painted or left black phos????Maybe the corvette guys would know? JohnZ? Looked at a few original cars but hard to see. My last two restorations I painted them. What does NCRS think is correct? Carlisle judging? thanks John Allouez Restorations     p.s. I am restoring that special car and these small details are important to me.
