Maintenance / Re: 67 Engine + Muncie Installation

Thanks... I do have a tilter and a cherry picker with long support legs. I kind of remember (6 years ago) doing a change with the tranny on, but I wasn't sure. I plan on removing the radiator and using the 4 corner intake method. Dan

Maintenance / Re: Replacing rear housing
« on: March 12, 2007, 02:42:42 PM »
Since I worked for the GM axle plants iin product engineering in the mid to late 80's and  in 94 for AAM when they were seperated from GM, I should know the answer to this question. I believe the 12 bolt axles have a larger ring gear (8-7/8) vs 8-1/2 for the 10 bolt design. There could also be a different hypoid offset. Also, the axle shaft splines into the side gears are likely different. Don't remember about the wheel bearings into the housing or the fit onto the axle shafts. So, in a nut shell, not interchangeable. In later years, GM got smarter and upgraded the 8-1/2, 10 bolt and eliminated the proliferation of the  12 bolt. Even more recently, the 8-1/2 for passenger vehicles, specifically the F-car went to an  upgraded 7-5/8 rear axle with better steel and heat treat technology. There's no question a 12 bolt is a better (stronger) way to go!

Maintenance / 67 Engine + Muncie Installation
« on: March 11, 2007, 03:00:55 PM »
I have a 1967 matching #'s 350 stock engine, transmission and 12 bolt rear axle I've just rebuilt. In the car is a mod 4-bolt main 350/400+hp solid lifter drag engine / tranny & 4.10 rear axle (car runs low 12's). I'll be putting the vehicle back to stock. My question is can the engine and tranny be installed assembled together from the top side with a cherry picker and the hood off? The vehicle will be on floor jacks. Or should I install the engine/clutch/bell hsm. asm first and then attached the tranny from the bottom? Also, can the starter, exhaust man, carb, alt, water and fuel pumps be installed with the engine, or do I need to do those after the engines in place? Thanks....

Mild Modifications / Re: 350 Won't Start???

Don't know if you solved your problem, but another reason you could have those system is if your cam is shot. Happened to me on a later model 350 and it was the cam. Seems the lobes were worn..... heat treat issue I suspect!

That agrees with my measurements of my distributor housing. If you come up with the hole size, please let me know.. Thanks.. Dan

Does anyone know what the hole size should be for the machined hole in the rear of the engine block that the distributor housing slides into??? I want to be sure I have the correct slip fit with the distributor housing. I believe its specification is 1.2485/1.247.

I agree with you on some sort of oiling scheme for the lower dist. bushing/bearing! But, my distributor housing does not have a cross drilled hole. So the only lube it will get is from splash off the cam/crank or leak down from the oil galley hole which intersects with the dist. hsg. So I'm wondering if I need to worry about the hole (which your picture shows) in my ..2657 block which is plugged?? If pressurized oil from the oil galley would work it way up (or down)  the distributor housing, it would overflow the top of the cast tower in the block. Hmmmm..... Does your distributor have the cross drilled hole? Does anyone else have a distributor housing w/o the cross drilled hole shown in on of the above pictures? ... Thanks... Dan

Gee thanks... Does anyone know the purpose of the angle hole shown in the "distributor oiling system" cross section view?? My hole is plugged and I don't know if I need to open it up! Thanks.. Dan

Does anyone out there know where I can find articles on how the GM sbc oiling system works for a 67 - 350cid engine. Thanks!

General Discussion / Re: 3892657 Engine Block Distributor Tower
« on: December 02, 2006, 11:00:14 PM »
I do have the cross drilled holes (one in the front and one in the back) in the bottom of the distributor hole . The one I have the question on is drilled from the outside to the inside, about 1-1/2 inch down from the top, and about 1 inch above the the oil galley where the #8 lifters holes are. It is drilled slightly at an angle front to the back of the block and angles down from the outside to the inside at about 45 deg. I  don't have a picture, yet!

Thanks for the response. The distributor 'tower' is cast vertically at the rear of the oil valley. This is the valley where the holes are drilled for th lifters. The distributor is drilled out vertically with a hole for the distributor shaft. This is standard and in some blocks, the top of the tower is nearer the bottom of the valley (short tower), and some, like mine, the top is up near where the intake seals on the rear of the block (tall tower). I have seen several pictures showing this tower, some with the cross drilled hole I have a question on, and some without the hole. Still looking for knowledge.... Dan

I have a 3892657 engine block I am rebuilding (numbers matching) for my 67 camaro, 350SS/RS. The distributor tower that is cast into the block in the oil galley is the tall style. There is a 'sleeve' pressed into the distributor hole, and there is an angled (down) hole drilled through the tower from the oil galley into the distributor hole and through the sleeve. However, the hole appears to have been welded closed! I have a 68 block w/o the sleeve and the hole is open. Does it matter if the hole is open or not???? Confused!
Thanks... Dan

Re: Wheels..... I know it sounds crazy, but I have a 67 SS/RS 350 and am looking for 5, FC code, 14x6 steel wheels. I have drum brakes that work fine and wish to keep it stock. Any leads on where I might locate such type wheels?? Dan (owned an identical 67 in 67). Thanks
