Trans-Am Camaros / Old 1960's AC racing spark plugs
« on: February 04, 2016, 04:30:30 PM »
Anyone remember these AC plugs?
The are from 1960s and supposed to be a AC racing plug

the tip is a small diameter like some of the modern plugs

no numbers on the plugs but has 541-CAG on the large box

I couldn't find a listing for that number

been a shifter hoarder myself :)

the originals I have seen were sliver cad on the trans bracket
The silver cad can look pretty dark either from age or was dark when new

I have a set of 69 rods that are original and are dark silver/gray

there is a stabilizer bar that goes from the shifter main bolt to a small bracket that bolts to a rear trans case bolt

here is a repop on ebay but the funny thing is the picture is for a Saginaw bracket but the ad says Muncie
the Muncie bracket and Saginaw bracket look similar but the edges are not formed the same
In the side view, Muncie has a U shape and the Saginaw has a Z shape

General Discussion / Re: Would you pay more for a rare color?
« on: January 26, 2016, 08:31:20 PM »
I'm not sure if there is always a buyer premium for rare colors but there is one for what some call  wild colors or "hi po" colors or high impact colors

All the auto manufactures had these special colors in the late 60s early 70s
I remember reading articles about these colors
here is one
https://fourwheeldrift.wordpress.com/2006/09/30/color-me-crazy-%E2%80%93-the-best-and-worst-paint-color-names/

In 1969 and 1970 AMC offered a "Big Bad" color option on its Javelin and AMX.
Three colors were available ,Orange ,Green and Blue
http://bigbadamc.tripod.com/

Yenko ordered 6 Camaro colors ...Hugger Orange, Daytona Yellow, LeMans Blue, Fathom Green, Rally Green, Olympic Gold
I guess he though those were hi po colors

I have heard Camaro collectors say they would pay more for Hugger Orange,  Daytona Yellow and Black cars but of course some wouldn't

what color is the plating ?
Most of the 69 Camaros I have seen had silver cad on the 1-2 and 3-4 rods, and black oxide on the rev rod  but have seen all 3 silver and all 3 black

I disagree
I have been buying collecting rebuilding Hurst and Muncie shifters for over 25 years and over half of the ones I had
had the rubber on the forward levers or they had a trace of the rubber where it had been.
I have also seen the rubber bushings on unrestored cars
Some didn't have the rubber

I also had a NOS set that had the rubber

I don't know why some didn't have the rubber as the notched hole was designed for the rubber bushing
If they were not going to use the rubber, they would just need a round hole

here is a pic of some extra ones

144
I have seen  forward levers that look silver cad with no yellow and some look like a yellow tint

some forward levers have the molded rubber bushing insert and some don't have the rubber bushing

the AIM looks like no rubber in the drawing

its odd because the hole with the notches was made to accept the molded rubber like used on the shifter levers

normally a no bushing lever just has a round hole like used on the Rev lever and on 67 68 Camaros

most of the forward levers I have seen had the rubber or traces of rubber from a worn bushing

145
the mount plate is silver cad
originals are hard to find but you can buy a repop bolt kit
the small block kit has 2 hex head bolts and 1 button head

be sure to put the button head in the correct location as there is a pin in the Hurst shifter that comes out when in reverse and can hit the bolt if its not a buttonhead

on the Muncie shifter rebuild, ask about the gate spring and retainer

I had to re-rebuild a few because whoever rebuilt it did not put in the gate spring and hat shaped retainer
they are hard to find and are missing on many used shifters

I had to make a my own hat shaped retainers because I could not find any and they are missing on my spare shifters

instruction sheet shows contents, part numbers, assembly drawing and info

does not say what finish was used

Joe,
What changed on the 67-8  aftermarket shifter?

The original 67-68 Camaro Hurst aftermarket shifter has a two piece welded neck
Then in about 1969 they changed to a stamp steel neck and used it for 67-69 Camaros and still use today
now you get same shifter for 67-69 but 69 uses a different stick

The original Camaro Hurst used a curved stick and shifter is silver cad
I have an original with the stick and have the original install sheet that shows it
It was also shown in the 1967 Camaro Hot Rod Magazine article where they claimed it was the first Camaro to get a Hurst shifter

That article inspired my search to find one ,was hard to find as not many around anymore

149
I have been a Hurst shifter collector for many years and I know they went from silver cad to a black oxide color around 1970 -71 on the OEM shifters and about the same for some aftermarket shifters

on the aftermarket shifters, they would phase in some changes

for example the large Hurst letters vs the smaller letters or the welded stick vs the bolt on stick

for a the early Mustang and the 55-57 Chevy, Hurst kept selling the older version shifter with large letters and the welded on chrome stick
after some models were using the bolt on chrome stick

The 1967 and 1968 Camaro had 3 different Hurst aftermarket shifters
the original early 67 68 Camaro Hurst aftermarket shifter and chrome stick was only used a short time then was redesigned

Yes , as far as I know all the 1967 Yenko Harrell Camaros started as SS396 cars
only a small number of early cars were Yenko built SS350 to to 427 conversions
