Originality / Correct Carb Part #
« on: October 22, 2006, 01:31:38 AM »
Hello:

I want to get back to the correct Holley 780 on my 68 L78. Just a check on the correct part number. Is it 4053 DZ? I know (unless I get really lucky)  I won't be able to have the correct date code but would like to at least get the correct part number.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for pointing me in that direction.  I will look into the plating kit.

Guys:

This may be another stupid question from a newbie but here goes anyways.  I positively dislike nasty ash trays and although the previous owner did not smoke for 20 years the ashtrays have obviously been used.  Can I just take them out, mask them off and blast them or do I need to paint them as well?  If I need to paint them can someone recommend the correct paint to use?

Thanks

Here is the date code and information off my windows:

Right side:      SOFT-RAY
              SAFETY  L    FLO-LITE
                  AS-2   O   AZ-10
                             F
                 SOLID TEMPERED
                       M74

Left side:      SOFT-RAY
              SAFETY  L    FLO-LITE
                  AS-2   O   LX-10
                             F
                 SOLID TEMPERED
                        M74

So one window is from September of 1967 (with Astro-Ventilation graphic fired on inside of window) and one is from March of 1968 (without Astro Ventilation graphic)

Steve:

He does not have the old grille as he sent me all the Camaro parts he had along wiht the car.  I think he wadded his original car up pretty good as he said there wasn't much of anything left that was straight.  One door and one trunk lid was pretty much it.

RJ:

Thanks for the link to the interesting article.  The information is both interesting and yet troubling. The door is pretty surely the original as it is the correct color and has the factory crayon marks on it, so I assume the glass is original too, but the build date on my car is 06C.  It's late now so tomorrow I will check the date codes on the glass to see where this leads us.  This will be fun to see where it ends up.  Here is a picture of the inside of the door.

Steve:

I believe the VIN on his other car that got wrecked was 124378L312627.  I think this brings the build date to November 1967 but will have to check the numbers.  I do know that he did not use the grille from that car as it was not usable.

Hi:

My passenger side window has the Astro Ventilation graphic frosted or painted in the front corner of the glass and I assume this is the original glass.  The drivers door does not have this graphic.  Did this graphic only come on the right side or was it on both sides and my drivers side is a replacement?

Thanks

Guys:

Most definitely chrome on the horizontal bars.  Of course the perimeter cleans up easier because the black paint is on the metal piece there.  It is harder to clean up the horizontal bars and I had to resort to a Q-Tip with the lacquer thinner on it but there is definitely chrome on the horizontal bars.  The shame of this is that these are original parts and it is totally not practical to clean the grille and HL covers up so I will either just hold on to them or sell them to let someone else do what thy want with them.

Sorry this may not be what you want to hear Steve, but it is what it is.

Guys:

I got some lacquer thinner and worked on the headlight cover a little bit and there is definitely chrome under the black paint.  Here are some pics.  To refresh your memory my car is an 06C car.

Well that's what I was thinking too but being a newbie I wanted to get some more experienced opinions.  I will try to check it out this weekend if it doesn't snow  >:(

Philliip:

You make a good point and we already lubed it once.  i will check to make sure we did it good but I am thinking I will just replace it.  They are not too expensive and it will just eliminate the problem.

Maintenance / Transmission/clutch noise

Guys:

I am getting a minor squeal when I let the clutch out in neutral.  As soon as the clutch starts to engage the squeal starts.  One knowledgeable guy said it was transmission, possibly a bearing.  Does this sound right?  Would fairly suck if that's the case.  BTW L78, M22.  Pretty new clutch in good shape.

Thanks

Hi guys:

My speedo is sticking and not reading the right speed.  Any special tricks to replacing the cable?  I see there are several lengths available so I will need to research which one is correct for a 68 L78 with M22.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Steve:

My drivers side is cavity 4 and my pasenger side is cavity 3.  I am guessing they were either four cavity molds or more likely they were in a 2+2 mold where two cavities are the left and two cavities are the right side but they are molded in the same mold at the same time.
