General Discussion / Re: Correct Date Code Carb or New?
« on: November 05, 2006, 03:09:49 AM »
Okay gus:

Eric at Vintage Muscle Car Parts found me a date correct carb and, being as his busines sis restoring carbs he will restore it to like new condition.  I have heard good things about him from either this site or TC so I guess I will go with him on this unless anyone has any reason that I shoudn't.

Thanks for the input and JohnZ, I am sure Jerry would do a great job too, it's just that Eric came through first.

I'll let you all know how it turns out when I get the carb in a month or so.

Phillip:

I already have too many personalities to fit in one car, never mind three  ;D  I think I will go with the correct date carb.  I know where there is one with a date of two weeks before the car build so it works out good.  it's just a tough hit money wise.  Especially considering I will not be driving the car again until March or April.

General Discussion / Correct Date Code Carb or New?
« on: November 03, 2006, 01:39:45 AM »
Is it worth the extra $$ to find a date correct 4053 DZ carb for my 68 L78 or should I just go with a new one? Will it increase the value of the car to have the date correct carb even though it is not original? A very reputable guy from all I have heard can get a date correct carb (not a restamp) and restore it. His work looks great and he is well thought of. Or I can just go with new from Heartbeat City or others. The car is mostly original or factory correct and I tend to lean toward that but we're talking about $300 or so difference. I will show the car locally but it is by no means a 1000 point car or anything like that. It's mostly a really nice driver for cruise ins and shows and sunny days (the six or so sunny days we actually have per year here in Central New York)

Any opinions?

Thanks

General Discussion / Re: Cost of Camaro

First Gen:  Thanks for the kind words on the car.  I remember back in about '84 when I played golf at the first course at Keowee and thought to my self "self, $35,000 for a building lot is too much to spend"  What a wing nut was I?  Oh well the old 20-20 hindsight.

Research Topics & Reports / Re: 68 RS center grille

Steve:

Sad to say that my grille is not atached with rivets but with screws, and the top screws and nuts are different than the bottom ones.  Here are a couple of pics.  Based on this I guess we have to conclude that the previous owner was incorrect and that the Grille had been replaced at some time.

Steve:

Just t clarify one thing on my cenetr grille, it is attached to the outer frame by bolts, not rivets.  Sorry for any confusion as I reported and sent pics earlier that my headlight covers were attached with rivets but did not report on my center grille.  My AIM looks like it shows that the grille is attached to the outer frame by rivets, then that is attached to the body by bolts and nuts.

I will be looking at the clutch/transmission this weekend, weather permitting.  Some more info is that the car is wanting to creep forward in neutral when I let the clutch out.  Does this help with the diagnosis?

Originality / Re: '69 Z/28 Stripe Widths?
« on: October 26, 2006, 10:44:08 AM »
Jim:
I don't have the dimensions you ask for however my 68 AIM has the stripes laid out for the 68 Z.  You should be able to get the dimensions from the 69 AIM.  Hope this helps.

Guys:

The "circles" are ejector pin marks for where the part is ejected from the mold.  The number 1 is just the cavity identification.  Mine has the same cavity number.  Due to the size of the part I would guess this is most likely a one cavity mold, however there may have been more than one mold.

Thanks again John.  Now the search is on for a correct date coded 4053 carb for a(n) 06C built 68 L78.

Don:

Here are pics of a 68 and a 69 AM.  Here is a link to this source for radios from a previous post.  I call dibs on the 68 AM/FM they have on their site.  Now all I need is $450 that I have no other use for. lol

John:

Wow!  That looks awesome.  Thanks for the reference.  This will make a nice winter project.  Find a proper date coded Holley, send it out for restoration and then install for spring.   ;D  Can I ask what is the guideline on the carb date code vs. engine build date and car build date?

Thanks again for the reference this is a big confidence booster for getting a correct date carb.

Thanks Ed.

I will check Ebay although I am a little concerned about getting someone else's problem, I would prefer to have a correct date code.  I see in the Year One book they will recondition/replate carbs to bring back to original but it is a little costly.  I guess I can always sell my carb to help, offset the cost.  I will have to double check the numbers on it.
