Decoding/Numbers / Re: Transmission, Rear End and Trim tag

There is some more information.  The numbers above the ST 68 read 06C and P074, so the trim tag reads:

                            06C                         P074
                            ST 68 12437 LOS 43226 BDY
                            TR 749         Z-Z PNT
                            ACC

Hope this helps.

Mark

Kurt:

Wow, you have good records or recollection.  The previous owner acknowledges that he replaced the 4.56 gears with 3.73.  The original was the 4.56  I am totally okay with that as long as I know what the original was.  Actually I prefer 3.73 for more regular driving.  I don't have a real good pic of the cowl tag but will send you what I have later this evening.  I do have a drawing of it that the appraiser I had look at the car in Nevada drew up.  I can send that as well.

Mike, if ACC doesn't mean anything then why is it there?  Maybe the powers at GM put it there just to throw us off lol.  :-\

Yes it makes sense that ACC stands for Accessory, but what does that mean in terms of the car?  Is this what signifies a true RS SS, or what?  I know there is not much documentation for first gen Camaros, especially 68's, but is there a way to tell what this car was originally?  Also, why does the trim tag say ACC and not have any other X code like I see on other cars?

I'm so confused and I just want to understand what the car was originally, and if that coincides with what the car is now.  I do know it was definitely a big block car from the factory, and it appears to be original, it's just that there is that small percentage of doubt that I would like to eliminate.

Thanks

Decoding/Numbers / Transmission, Rear End and Trim tag
« on: August 10, 2006, 11:23:27 AM »
I recently bought a 68 sold as an RS SS, L78 block, M22 numbers matching car.  The engine is indeed an L78 numbers matching with what certainly appears to be the original block stamping (correct broach marks and fonts).  I am not so sure about the tramsmission and rear end and I am also not sure I understand the trim tag.  The VIN is 124378L344764.  There is no build sheet or POP.

The transmission has a date code of B8R30 and has the correct VIN though this could have been restamped.  Haven't had it out of the car and had to use a mirror to see the VIN code.  Is this a correct date?  This transmission has three drain plugs, two on the side and one on the bottom.  Is this an M22?

The rear end stamping is BW1101G2 which I believe is the code for a 456 rear end.  Interesting that the date code is within a day of the transmission date code if I decoded correctly, but it seems that both are a little too early for what I think is the June build of the car.

The trim tag reads:  ST 68 12437 LOS 43226 BDY
                            TR 749         Z-Z PNT
ACC  (What does the ACC mean?)

I am just learning about all the codes and everything and am liking the car more and more as I look into it.  The underside is very clean with no rust as it lived in the high desert out in Nevada.  Can anyone provide input on the codes please?  Also, if this is a true RS SS with a numbers matching L78 block, M22 tranny and a 456 rear end wouldn't this be a fairly rare combination?

I have a lot of pictures but am not sure if they are to big for down loading here.

Thanks for the help.  You guys on this site are great.

Thanks for the pic.  Great car and it looks awesome with the stripe.  This is exactly what my car will look like if I bring it back to original color from the current black.  Hope all is well in sunny California.  You guys have it great with the cars there and no rust.

One compelling vote for stripe.

Thanks Ed.  That's great information and is consistent with what the guys at Camaro Specialties say.  I guess I will change it out and will let you know the date code on the 069 manifold.

Joe:

When I describe the stripe I am distinguishing bewtween what is usually called the Bumble Bee stripe (D91, early 68) and the stripe that comes about half way vertically down the nose piece then extends back along the front quarter and down to just about the lock on the door.  If I am correct this is the D90 stripe that was added for later production in 1968.  My car was built in June 1968 so this would be the correct stripe.

I appreciate any and all feedback on this decision.  I know the car will look great either way and it is subjective, and for some reason I just can't make up my mind on this one thing.  The car is mostly original or factory correct and I want to keep it that way.  I also know it could have been ordered stripe delete, athough this doesn't really matter, because the one thing that is not factory original or correct at this time is the color.  I just want to get people's opinion on this.

General Discussion / To stripe or not to stripe? That is the question
« on: August 06, 2006, 03:04:40 AM »
Okay Camaro experts, I could really use some input here.  I just bought my first (well actually second) Camaro.  It is a 68 RS SS 396/375 and the previous owner had repainted it black from the original Z-Z British Green code, removed all the badging and wheel and rocker panel chrome trim, and blacked out the grille.  I am putting the SS badging and RS chrome back on along with a new grille with chrome leading edges where the factory correct is painted silver.  The grille should look like the one on the 68 RS SS on the front of Chevrolet By The Numbers 1965-69.  The paint is good and I will leave it like this for several years before I consider repainting.

Now the question; do I put the SS stripe back on?  The correct stripe would be the D90 that goes down the quarter panel and door.  With all the chrome back on the black and chrome look will be sharp and I am undecided about the stripe.  On the one hand the stripes all look great, on the other hand I wonder if the stripe will take away from black and chrome look.  Does anyone have a picture of a black RS SS with the prroper chrome and the stripe?  I have not been able to find one yet on google images.

It will be fun to hear what everyone's opinion is on this?

Thanks, Mark

Steve:

The manifold on the car now is the #3885069.  In the CTBN book it is on page 164 and is listed as correct for the 1968 early 396/375.  The 3933163 manifold is listed as the 396/375 manifold for laet 1968 but there is a note stating that 1968 applications for this manifold are unverified.  This is what is confusing me.  The car was built in June of 68 and while I am doing some work to the car we have the opportunity to change the manifold out if need be.  I am just not sure which manifold is correct.  I guess the only way to tell is to pull it off and check the date code?

Decoding/Numbers / Re: 68 Camaro big block or not?

The cross member is almost a sure way to tell if the car was an original big block.  Very few people change these out so it is almost always the original.

RJ and Steve.  Thanks for the help.  I just bought the car and most of it is original so I am trying to make sure I get as much as possible factory correct.  Yes Colvins does say that the 1968 application for the 163 code manifold is unverified, which throws some confusion into the mix.  The code on the manifold is correct for an early 1968, and Camaro Specialties who is doing some work on the car for me recommends changing it out for a 163 code manifold.  No reason to spend the labor if I don't have to.

Steve, we have not had the manifiold off so I do not know what the underside numbers are.  Wish I did as I think the date code will tell us more.

Decoding/Numbers / Correct intake manifold code

What is the correct intake manifold code for a 1968 L78 built in June of 1968?  This engine has the snowflake high rise manifold and I am not sure it is the original, though the previous owner says it is.  Thanks
