General Discussion / Re: Need help with Headers..
« on: July 26, 2009, 04:26:56 AM »
I agree with Aaron on this one, get a set of Stahl's. However, you can modify the Hooker's for a lot less than the Stahls are going to cost. I have contacted the owner of the 68 we did that has these same heads and pictures will be forthcoming tomorrow. along with the Hooker part number. Been a little busy around here with a newborn so I am a little forgetful about things I have posted on here lately.............RatPack.........

Tom, I tried to invert the picture but it didn't help identify any other characters that might be present. If those numbers do not match the last 5 digits of your vin, then that is not your original engine.....RatPack......

Tom, I just reviewed your pictures and I noticed that you can see the vin stamp to another car in the picture that shows the side of the block. I cannot make it out completely, but is it a Camaro vin?.............................RatPack.............................

Damon, you are going to either need to build a custom set of headers or modify some existing ones to make them clear that a/c box. Currently there are not any aftermarket headers available to fit those heads and clear the a/c box on the firewall. Now we built a 68 a few years ago using those heads, but we used a set of Hooker Super Comps by modifying two of the pipes on the header. It is a simple modification that can be done by any good fabricator. Start with a set of uncoated headers, modify them, then send them out to be coated. I can get you the exact number for the headers later tonight as I will have to dig through my paperwork. I will try and get you some pictures of them also if I can get a hold of the customer that owns that car...................RatPack................

John, you can fabricate a connector to go on the headers to run the pipe up to the snorkle. Done this on a few cars in the past. Give me a little bit and will provide you with a drawing........RatPack..............

I can tell you this when it comes to fenders, both NOS GM ones and the repros have to be fitted to the car. The worst are GM 67-8 models driver's side rs or non-rs. I am not sure what they got out of place, but almost everyone has needed to be "pie cut" on the inner rear brace in the middle just to get them to fit to the door. The repros for the 67 & 8's are not the best in the world but will fit with some work, less work than the GM ones. The 69's are a great fit, that is if you buy the ones from Goodmark directly, or one of their vendors such as Year One, Camaro Central, Ricks, etc. There are some junk early ones that were produced with the wrong front leading edges and they will not fit the car period. They are usually sold for around $100 - $120 ea and come from either NPD or the Paddock. There are some issues with the 67-68 full rear quarter panel on the passenger side so I highly recommend that you do not remove any of the trunk jamb or the area where it is welded to the tailpanel. Somehow the die got damaged and the stamper for Goodmark decided they would fix it themselves w/o telling anyone stateside. They have it off in the jamb and tailpanel area. All of the others have no fitment issues for any 1st Gen. I know you must use the repro outer wheelhouses on the 69's as there is a slight difference the shape of the quarter panel just behind the rear wheel when compared to an original. It is so slight that it is not easily recognized w/o a template from an original 1/4 panel in that area.

As for the ones stamped from GM tooling....the only ones I know of that have been actually done that way are the 70-72 Chevelle 1/4 panels, and they are as bad as some of the last ones GM produced. The body lines are horrible! Depending upon the type of car I am building, and what the customer wants to spend, I would probably go for the repro stuff except for the 67 & 8 fenders.........JMO..........RatPack................

Originality / Re: 68 SS air filter assembly finish
« on: July 09, 2009, 09:07:44 PM »
John, the air cleaner assembly should be painted 80% gloss black, and what I mean by that is the gloss level is not the same as the exterior of the car which is 100%. Normally what I use is Duplicolor #T100 Universal Gloss Black spray paint over the top of bare metal just like the factory did, but instead of a smooth metal finish I glass bead it. Some people use primer, I don't as I want it done just like the factory, and if you prefer to use a primer then use a black primer with a final sanding using 800 grit paper before painting it. This paint is a lacquer and will dry to the proper sheen. One thing though, do not paint on a humid day or the paint will "blush" on you. (will have a cloudy look to it)....................As for the filter, black, I have seen white, but black is more prevelant...........RatPack................

Originality / Re: 1968 Astro Ventillation ball finish
« on: July 07, 2009, 10:31:36 PM »
They were black on the inside. You must have the cheaper repros as the ones from Rick's (CHQ) have the correct finish on the fins. Don't try to tape them off to be painted as the clear lacquer that is sprayed over the chrome on those cheap ones will come off with removal of the tape....been there, done that.............RatPack..................

General Discussion / Re: cowl plenum air cleaner
« on: June 24, 2009, 10:16:23 PM »
The Delco number is A226CW and the Chevrolet number is 6422544. Expect to pay a stupid amount of money for one, that is if you can even find one. However if correctness is not a concern, look into one from a 79-80 Olds with the 350 deisel engine. It is the same diameter, but about an 1/8" taller. It will still allow the lid to sit on the air cleaner........Rat Pack...........

Mild Modifications / Re: 69 motor mounts/frame mounts
« on: June 22, 2009, 02:39:15 PM »
You need them from a 6-cylinder car. Other items you will need to change during the swap are: throttle rod linkage, the 6-cyl models used a cable in 69, also the fan shroud will need to be changed, but you could modify a small block one to work as the 6-cyl shroud is very hard to find. Why are you changing to a 6-cylincer from a V8? Any particular reason you are not using the 250 instead of the 230? ...................RatPack...............
