Originality / Re: N/66 option phase-out for 1969 Camaro production

Jerry,  do you deduct points for a non-original (but correct) engine, trans, rear axle, or other component if the guy has documentation it was replaced under warranty by the dealer?...............RatPack................

Steve, you will have problems getting the OEM moldings to fit the Goodmark 1/4's, but not as bad as trying to put repro moldings on GM 1/4's. Make sense?...... Check your email for some questions........RatPack...........

If your car has GM quarter panels on it, then you must use GM moldings. The Corvex part is made to fit only the repro 1/4 panels which are a little different than the factory ones behind the wheel. There are new correct repros supposedly being tooled up right now that will fit properly on original 1/4's, but it will be awhile before they are going to be available. Before anyone asks, no they are not being tooled up by Corvex  (Dynacorn). If I find out anymore info I will pass it along..........RatPack................

You know, I have a mint set of NOS ones that somebody sent me with a car that he supposedly wants restored........they MAY  ::) still be in my attic unless there is a great offer sent my way ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ..................

I just checked and there is not an air shock made by Monroe that fits multi-leaf 68-9 Camaros anymore. The closest is the one for the single-leaf which doesn't make sense as it is a longer shock, and usually the multi-leaf cars need the longer shock. If your car is finished, I would remove the rear shocks that are on there now. Once you have them removed, measure from the bottom of the upper shock mount to the center of the lower mounting point on the shock plate. If that distance is equal to or longer than the compressed length of the air shock dimensions listed above, then I would say try them. Also compare the extended & compressed lengths of the shocks you removed to the dimensions above. The dimensions are so close that they should work, now don't forget to take into consideration the upper washer and bushing for the shock when measuring your car. I wish I could have helped more. BTW, the NAPA number is MA711 for the single leaf shock, which is the same for O'Reilly's, Advance, and Autozone...............RatPack...........................

Mild Modifications / Re: Hurst Comp Plus Shifter Alignment Problem.
« on: July 15, 2007, 03:39:04 AM »
I've never seen a Competition/Plus mounting bracket like that--perhaps Hurst has changed the design. In the old days they bolted straight to the tailshaft with the triangular bolt holes already there, with no plate that went under the transmission mount. For use with a console there was a dogleg handle mounting bracket that the handle bolted to to move it over. That looks more like an old Hurst Indy shifter mounting plate to me.

That has always been the mounting bracket for the 67-68 Camaros with Muncies since at least the early 70's. The 69 uses a different mounting bracket (triangular one you described) as the hole in the floor is in a different location than that of the 67 & 68's with 4-spds. I found this out the hard way a few years ago when we used the Hurst mounting kit for a 69 in a 67 as it had the side cover and forks for a 69. The shifter would not come through the hole unless it was in 1st gear, and then it was jammed at the back of the factory hole. I bought the 67-68 kit as shown above and I used the levers from the 69 kit, with the rest of it from the 67-68 kit. The mounting bracket shown above is exactly what I needed to put the shifter handle in the correct location. All worked great after that.

Franko, make sure your mounting kit looks like the one pictured, if it doesn't, then that is probably your problem. Also did your car come with the console originally? From your post it sounds as if you added it. If so, then you may have it off to one side a little too much, maybe a slight adjustment of the mounting holes is all that is needed............RatPack...............

The ones you mention sound very close - NAPA we don't have up here - was it a brand exclusive to them or was it a generic brand you ended up with like Gabriel or Monroe?
Thanks - Randy

Randy, those are made by Monroe for NAPA. I can do more verification Monday through a friend that owns the local NAPA store, but I believe Monroe supplies Pep Boys, Autozone, and Advance Auto..........RatPack..........

Randy, I bought a set from the local NAPA back in November that said they were for single leafs, but it is possible they will fit multi leaf cars by the specs shown.

Air shocks for single leaf applications:
Extended length:  19.625"
Compressed length:   11.875"
Total travel:  7.75"

Stock replacement rear shocks for multi-leaf cars show similar specs:
Extended length:  19.375"
Compressed length:   11.75"
Total travel:   7.625"

It would be up to you as to whether they would fit or not. The last set I bought for a multi-leaf car was about 4 years ago and they were from NAPA. I cannot believe that Monroe would quit making these.............RatPack...............

Our table is incorrect and should be updated. Agreed.

If the hobby went by what people thought or remembered Z/28s would have black grilles. And they all have ZL2 hoods and spoilers too.......... ;D

Bill, according to the charts on the CRG X-code page, all SS models have the chrome trim on the bezels (see the link below). I know of many X66 cars that have the chrome trim on the bezels. As for the Yenko, that is not really a true comparison since those cars all specified the standard production grill in silver, so maybe they got the headlamp bezels w/o the chrome, unless they are X11 coded. Dunno?...............RatPack.......................

Bill, I thought all (non-RS) SS Camaros in 69 received the chrome trim on the headlamp bezels? X55 does, so why not X66?..................RatPack....................

General Discussion / Re: Enclosed trailer
« on: July 10, 2007, 03:06:30 AM »
Paul, the first thing you must consider is how much weight can your tow vehicle pull per the manufacturers GVWR located on the sticker in the drivers door jamb. The GVWR of the trailer cannot be more than the GVWR of the tow truck or you are considered overloaded per DOT regulations, even if the trailer is empty. Most trailers with 5-lug 3500# axles can be safely towed with a 1/2 4wd extended cab truck or larger SUV (Suburban, Tahoe, etc.) without any problems. Just make sure you have the largest engine available for your vehicle, and the lowest gear ratio possible. (Torque is what you need, not horsepower). Any trailer with the 6-lug 5000# axles will need either a 1500HD truck that has the 3/4 ton truck axles, or you will need a 3/4 ton or larger truck.

Now without knowing what your vehicle is, a 20' enclosed trailer is more than enough to haul your Camaro. I have a 20' Haulmark and when my 68 is in the trailer there is another 4' of room at the front center (the front wall is not flat) with a foot or so at the rear. Let me know and I can post some pictures of the trailer with the car loaded in it. You can go to a 24' trailer but you will need the larger 3/4 ton truck for towing as most, if not all of those trailers have the 5000# axles. Two mandatory items are a weight distributing hitch and a sway bar, or you will not enjoy towing on the interstate when a truck passes you from behind.  I have hauled cars as large as Chevelles, and mid 80's SS Monte Carlos with room left to spare, not much, but enough to keep tools and equipment up front.................RatPack...................

Originality / Re: 1968 rs/ss fender emlem confusion
« on: July 06, 2007, 10:22:07 PM »
bigrob24 7, I have never seen any production 68 RS/SS with the "rally sport" lettering above the SS emblems on the fenders as seen in the factory literature. My Oct 67 built RS/SS has the original fenders on it and it has the "Camaro" script above the SS emblems. There was one car that Kurt and I have seen that has the "rally sport" lettering above the SS, and I believe there is some doubt as to whether it is an original SS.

On a side note, the 68 Camaro promo's from MPC, including the MPC model kit, had the "rally sport" lettering above the SS just as in the Chevrolet literature............RatPack...............

Decoding/Numbers / Re: Where to find RPO codes?

Wow, a friend of mine has a car with the same paint and interior codes, built 01A. It also is a 307 PG. The car is red now though.

John

John, your friends car wasn't a low mileage original was it with a dark blue vinyl top installed over the white painted top?...........RatPack...................
