General Discussion / Re: any help

stock if it is still that way. If you don't want a stock car, sale it to someone who will keep it stock, then find one that is not numbers matching and build away to your harts desire.

General Discussion / Re: Camaro Publication ?

"Camaro Performers" is pretty good. https://www.circsource.com/store/Subscribe.html?magazineId=234

My only problem with Camaro Performers, is it is just about performance applications. There is very little info on correct restored cars. Yes sometimes they do a rare Hi Po car that is restored, but month to month there is not much on correct cars. Yes I also miss USCC.

Nice find! Love the blue on blue! Except for the drivers side quarter it looks like she fouled everything into the front sheet metal and doors which is better then both quarters.

Originality / Re: 68 Z28 with factory supplied headers ?

Jerry, Happy New Year to you also !
And thanks! The car 68 Z I just bought is drive train complete except for no engine. I want to restore it back to as close to orginal as I can. Does anyone know if the factory supplied headers are repoduced? I have always heard that headers do a lot for waking up a 302 and would like to go that route if possiable.

Although i have not been under many 67 rag tops, i have never seen an x brace. Is this feature for real?

Yes it's for real, most parts houses sale a repo one; NPD has it as part # C-12806-1A. The unibody cannot handle the twisting too well without a roof, so the brace was used to strengthen the body up. I live in the dry west and most convertibles out here still have them, as did my matching #'s 68 SS350 I used to own. I do imagine that in parts of the country that are prone to rust they might rott out quickly being they are under the car.

I don't remember the measurment but the windshield on a convertible is shorter than a coup. Also the fourth digit in the VIN should be a 6 for a convertible. It should also be a 6 in the fourth digit on the trim tag after the "ST". Also a factory convertible should have an "X" brace under the car to stiffen it up. The "X" brace could be removed but most I have ever seen have not been removed unless the car was striped of its parts in the past.
Hope it helps

Originality / 68 Z28 with factory supplied headers ?
« on: January 01, 2010, 09:30:57 PM »
I have a question about 68 Z/28's with the factory headers. As I understand the headers were supplied in the trunk of the car and shipped to the dealer for either the new owner or dealer to install. When the dealer installed the headers did they remove the smog system? Or did the factory supplied headers come with provisions for the smog system?
Thanks

I would think not: it was probably replaced at some point. If your not careful you can crack them removing the bolts to them.

Most states with docs. and matching hidden VIN's will assign a new VIN number to a car missing a VIN. It is not the factory type VIN that mounts on the dash, but it will keep everything legal. Usually it is a metal tag or plastic sticker that mounts on the door jam.

Originality / Re: 68 M21 question
« on: December 30, 2009, 01:02:54 AM »
 Thanks for the replys :)
I was asking because I picked up a 68 that was sold to me as a Z/28. It seems to have everything correct for a Z/28 such as 4 leaf rear springs, 12 bolt with BU code, and an M21 with the VIN of the car on it. It is a definate project but is missing the 302 engine. It has been sitting a long time but is complete minus the engine, the date codes on the trans and rear are with in two to three weeks of the build date of the car. Now I just need the weather to warm up and plan a trip to go get it as it's a ways from me.

Originality / 68 M21 question
« on: December 29, 2009, 08:39:24 PM »
I was reading the info on the main page about 68 Camaro's and noticed that in 1968 the M21 close ratio trans was only listed as available in the Z28 302, and the SS396, is that correct? Or did I miss something?

Maintenance / Re: Oil For 1969 350
« on: July 13, 2009, 06:04:57 PM »

PS- If anyone knows of a tag/badge on the block that will identify the engine as an actual 350 would be a great help as i am not positive it is a 350, and i will try and get some pictures up within the next week of my car!

On the front of the block on the passanger side beneith the head will be a pad that sticks out from the block it should be stamped with some letters and numbers, those letters and numbers will tell what the engine was orgionally, the other thing to look for is the casting number on the block which is located on the drivers side of the block by where the top of the bell housing bolts up.  The problem is if it has been rebuilt the letters and numbers on the pad might not be there because when a block is decked it will remove them most of the time. The problem with the casting number is that casting numbers were used sometimes with several different cubic inch displacements. Then if the engine has been rebuilt you still really won't know unless you find a way to measure the bore on the block or the stroke of the crank becasue either could have been changed and that will change the CID of the engine. Hope this helps even though it is not a deffient answer.

thanks Paul I have not seen that in a long time and it was good to see it again. Seening it made me think of another one I used to see and I don't remember the year but at the top it said "A word or Two to the compitetion You Loose". Seems like it had a 68 SS in it but I don't remember for sure.
