General Discussion / anyone use the HAys 85-103 clutch assy for Z28?
« on: August 06, 2009, 06:15:05 PM »
anyone use this setup? its their street/strip dia clutch with 2750 lbs holding pressure.

i tried the McLeod RST , which is a dual disk setup, but it doesn't have sring loaded hubs, and i couldn't eliminate the chatter in my car.

all the while, i thought it was the lightweight flywheel, so i put the Heavy one back in, and the problem still exists...

so i'm getting rid of this mcLeod and going with either hays or centerforce...

now the only other issue is whether or not to try the 10# flywheel again... ugh, i'd hate to put it all back together and have to pull it apart a 4th time. lOL

i'm not sure i follow... the 69 Z did have 2.02 and 1.6
so did the 67 and 68.

GM did produce the 186 heads in 1.94/1.5 versions... but not installed on Z28s.

How can you tell that it has the 2.02 combustion chamber vs the 1.94?

i'm not sure there is  difference.

thanks

General Discussion / Re: 4.10 and speedo accuracy
« on: August 03, 2009, 09:59:36 PM »
This is getting confusing...

i've now read that there were 6,7,and 8 tooth drive gears,,, but also read that there were 9 tooth drive gears...

and then others (like Liberty's Gears) say that there were only two... and they had 7teeth, but you could get two different Diamters which would change the speedo calibration...

can anyone confirm exactly which drive gear (the one pressed onto the output shaft of my Muncie)  to work with Stock 15inch wheels/ E70x15 tires.... 4.10 rear gears???

JohnZ's car came with an orange (25tooth) speedo gear.... so that much I know....

which gear shoudl I have pressed on the output shaft to make this combo accuate???

MAny thanks

thnks John, thts what I have in it now, and it is off... so i must have the different drive gear inside the trans.

thanks

i actually got the car out on the street this week with the new LT1 cam... although it is advanced.
the C/L are 110/122 which make it 6degrees advanced, and i have it installed another 2 degrees.

i have to agree that it really makes up a world of difference down low, and I didn't notice any loss of top end compared to the 30-30.

Often, with a torquey cam, you loose the "seat of the pants" effect because the "bigger" cam has no bottom end, and when it finally comes on, it feels great.
this LT1 seems strong right out of the get, and you definately feel it "come on" but it still pulls like gangbusters till 7k.

can't wait to get it on the track to see how a bias-ply stock machine with manifolds, smog, and full exhaust run... i have the wide ratio and 4.10s.
should be interesting

my car originally came with 3.73 rear... i now have 4.10s and can't seem to get the speedo accurate..

anyone know of the correct componants to get it spot on??  the trans is coming out this week, so if I have to change the gear on inside the trans... now is the time..

anyone??

Thanks

General Discussion / Re: Need help with Headers..
« on: July 26, 2009, 02:19:55 AM »
you are gonna leave a ton of power on the table with block huggers....  the bends are way way way to tight.  You'll be chasing your tail trying to get that thing tuned properly, and all tht motor potential is gonna be waisted with those things... not that sanderson makes a bad product, its just that block hugger headers are about as bad as you can get (performance wise).

for the money you have tied up in that motor, spend the extra cash on the stahls.... Jere can make them to clear the AC and his new ones are designed for the raised port exhaust.  The only headers I know of in that class.

yes they are expensive, but when you figure in how much better they fit, and how much better your car will breathe... you'll be glad you spent the cash.

plus they are tuned equal length, not shorty block huggers.

good luck

General Discussion / repop spiral shocks same as original GM
« on: July 23, 2009, 03:44:47 AM »
does anyone know if the repop spiral shocks are identical to theoriginal GM spirals?
when I bought my car, it had leaking original shocks on the car.. the previous owner bought NOS shocks that apparantly were junk..

i wound up selling them for peanuts and bought a set of the repops which i have yet to install... just in moving them with my hands... they vitually have no dampening.

i don't know how a shock really works.. but the KYBs i currently have on the car were very tough to compress, whereas these new spirals feel like mush.

i know that they stated that these were "show only" but jeeze... might as well not run shocks at all.

Anyone have good luck with these things?

they won't fit...

the subframe crossmember is right in the location where the center dump would be.

i have seen ramshorns that have a kickback allowing the exhaust to clear the crossmemnber, but i don't know they would work..

come to think of it, i've never seen a camaro with ramshorns period..

i suppose you could notch your kmember... but that would be silly.

General Discussion / Re: headers or manifolds on my 69 Z28?????
« on: July 21, 2009, 01:05:14 AM »
well, I go back and forth almost 2 times per year.... i love the stock look and knowing that my car is 100 percent stock...
but I also absolutely love to drive the car as it was intended....which means 3000-7000 rpm....  not exactly the sweet spot for a set of manifolds.

the manifolds will simply not perform like a set of headers (with good exhaust system)  but if you want it 100% stock... then you have to give up a modest amount of top end...

had I thought this through... i would have bought a 68 Z..... that way I could "claim" that the headers were ordered with the car... and have the best of both worlds..

LOL

with the potential of that 383, the manifolds will kill it.

i know there are headers available for sbc A/C cars.

i have a new set of Stahl 1 5/8 to 1 3/4 stepped that i'm selling..

the stahl site says that they clear PS (which i know they do for a fact)  but it says they need to be built to accomodate A/C

i'm not sure what that means, but if you call and ask them if the "model 106" they sold to Aaron Kaleniecki will fit A/C,, then i'll sell them to you for a great deal.

they are brand new... but painted..

good luck

yeah, I knew John had the 30-30 in his car, and i've run it at least a dozen times... the only time i used the LT1 was in a 327-365 and it didn't run very well at all, but that car had reduced compression and timing curve was way out of whack...

my Z has 11+compression,  wide ratio, and 4.10s... plus the motor is blueprinted and everything is spot on... before I rebuilt my Vette motor.. god only knows what it was up too LOL..

i currently have the 140 in the car an when it had headers on, it was very very nice to drive and enjoy, but i've put the stock manifolds and exhaust back on as I want to run the car in the Purestock drags.... while the LT1 cam isn't 100% technically stock for a 1969Z28, it isn't any bigger as the 140 is, so i'll be ok there.

i've gotten cam swaps down to an afternoon science in my car, so if i don't like the LT1 cam... 40 bucks worth of oil and gaskets, and about 4 hours, and i'll be back in business with the old 30-30 if the LT1 is disapointing.

i'm hoping the theory is true with regard to the LT1 cam being optimized for the Logtype manifolds on these cars... the 30-30 cam was designed for the L76 327 corvette engines which had 2.5 inch ramshorns... a far superior design.

So we'll see.

General Discussion / Anyone run the LT1 (178) cam in their DZ302???
« on: July 17, 2009, 09:38:31 PM »
does anyone actually run the LT1 cam in the 302?

After going back and forth between day 1 and day 2  for my 1969 z... i've decided to keep it day 1 appearing..

the only thing i might consider is the slightly smaller LT1 cam as i've read that it was optimized for the logtype manifolds on these cars, whereas the 30=30 wasn't.

my car has wideratio muncie and 4.10s... but i want all the GO i can get..

i ran several Engine Analyzers programs using as accurate of info that I could find, and in every instance... when using stock heads, stock intake, and most importantly stock manifolds, with a restrictive exhaust... the LT1 showed the best torque and top HP (only beating the 30-30 by a few HP at 6500 rpm)

i've run the 30-30 enough times to know how much improved it is with headers, but i'm just not thrilled with its performance when using exhaust manifolds...

I spoke to Wayne Guinn about this about 5 months ago, and he said that the LT1 was definately the way to go, but I wondered if anyone actually had any real "behind the wheel" experience with this cam..

according to the specs, it is 242-254 on a 116... so it shares the same exhaust lobe as the 30-30 but has a smaller intake lobe and is spread out to a 116...

thoughts?

i've read the 20% more torque and only a few hp off the top.. which is exactly what EA said, but i'd like to know from anyone who actually uses the cam?

Thanks

Restoration / Re: exhaust systems manufactures

I've talked to Joe a bunch of times, but i've not seen or installed one of their systems.

i suspect they are good, but in my case, i couldn't get the chrome tips, which was a deal breaker for me.

i've installed 3 Gardner systems on cars and every one has been a breeze to do on the floor of my garage... no cutting, no welding, everything lines up perfectly.

Gardners are expensive because are the simply the best... they fall together and hang strait with no issues at all.

every other system i know of is hit or miss... some fit nice, others are a joke.

an aluminized system will probably outlive the car unless you park it underwater :D
