General Discussion / Re: Crossram and exhaust manifolds anyone?????
« on: October 16, 2006, 10:16:51 PM »
Do you guys have real experiance with the crossram?

Wayne Guinn has stated to me several times that the crossram is what the 302 is designed for and in both of his books, there are dyno sheets showing more peak torque and more peak HP across the entire rpm range. In his opinion it is a very streetable intake and equally streetable to the 30-30 cam and 4bbl intake... (IF USING HEADERS although his books show several pix with the crossram and cast manifolds.)

I've seen several photos of cars with this manifold and the exhaust manifolds and I'm trying to determine how well it runs in that situation.

My car woke up a ton when i went to headers, but i also changed from the Chambered exhaust to an almost no backpressure 2.5 inch mandrel best system with a crossover, so I'm not sure how much of the "waking up" was a result of the headers, or the entire exhaust system.

I'm not concerned at all about running it above 3000 rpm... thats where it loves to be now anyway...
with a wide ratio and 4.10 gears.... low end isn't really an issue even for a 30-30 cammed 302.

General Discussion / Crossram and exhaust manifolds anyone?????
« on: October 16, 2006, 02:02:38 AM »
i am going to put the crossram on my Z, but would really like to keep the manifolds and smog on...

I put the repop Z28 headers on this week and even with the 30-30 and single 4bbl, the car runs a 1000% stronger from 2000 on up to 7000.

it will actually burn the tires off the car from 4000rpm on up....

but not only did I install headers,  I pulled the chambered exhaust off and went with a 2.5 mandrel bent system and crossover tube....

is anyone running the crossram with manifolds with good results?  We see alot of the cars in photos with them on, but i've never actually spoken to anyone who runs the crossram 140cam and manifolds - regardless of exhaust system.

any info from somone who has experince with this setup would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

i've had 3 Zs (2 were manual and 1 was power steerint)

the 1st z seemed to have a pretty effortess manual steering,  much like my 64 Corvettes manual steering..

the Z i hav now came with manual, and I coudln't take it anymore... either it wasn't rebuilt properly, or those E70x15s really grab the road..

i put power steering on the car just as John Z did (in fact our cars are almost sister companions as the only difference is I have an endura front bumper and delux seat belts with Standard interior, and his has delux interior with standard seatbelts. Aside from a few other differnces, I too couldn't take the manual steering in this car and coverted it over with all factory parts as well....

can you feel the road better?  I don't see how, the power steering is much more responsive to me and turns on a dime.

General Discussion / Re: Can a Saginaw 4 speed be built to handle Big B
« on: August 03, 2006, 12:05:50 AM »
you can buy a new muncie super case which is supposed to be able to handle 500 ft/lbs with no problem... you can also buy 2.52 gearset with the M-22 angle for improved torque handling.

the supercases are new and i think it adds 1/2 inch to the length of the trans... but for the cost of a supercase.. you can put a Tremec TKO 600 in it.. which is a close ratio 5 speed that has a 2.87 1st gear and .87 or optional .64 5th gear.

I have a TKO 500 in my 64 Pontiac behind a 428. the tko 500 has 3.27 1st gear and I have 4.88s in the back of that thing... talk about fun LOL  runs out of 1st gear at about 25 mph but 0-60 is about 4 seconds,,, which isn't bad for a 4500 lb car LOL

i don't think i can get a photo of it...

all I had done was a balance tube (crossover tube)

they drilled a 2" hole right into the inside of the pipes, just before it goes into the 1st chambered section.
then welded in a tube to connect the pipes.

it was a fairly simple procedure and made a world of difference...

i'd bet that you don't get as much of a crackle with headers as headers balance the exhaust into the rest of the system whereas Manifolds are not nearly as effecient.

eitherway,  it was the best move I could have made with my system, and if you suffer from uncontrollable crackle, then I'd highly suggest it.

by the way,  most people add crossovers for a performance gain..

i can honestly say that I can't tell if it made any positive or negative difference on the performance of the car, but it certainly took care of the unpleasant popping noise that was going on.

i have a smog system, but its non functional... i pluged the tubes and gutted the pump..
incidentally, I added a crossover over the weekend.

and it was 100% the correct decision I made... it eliminated the untolerable crackle or raspiness that the system had.... it is still loud, but the best sounding system i've ever heard.... when you get on it, it crackles like it should, but under part throttle and routine driving, it isn't uncontrollable like it was prior to the crossover tube.

Restoration / Re: 1969 Z-28 Tires
« on: July 29, 2006, 12:06:06 PM »
I have Kelsey Goodyear wide tread GTs on my car with no complaints...

it doesn't seem to lack any drivability or handling with the bias plys... plus it just looks right.

i had Sports Car 200s Firestones on my last Z and it wandered a bit,  the Goodyears seem to ride a little better, although I can't say for sure why that is.

Restoration / Re: need a transverse muffler for 69 Z ,
« on: July 29, 2006, 12:03:25 PM »
i know... it seems odd,  but everyone who is familiar with them says that the Chambered is more restrictive than the transverse system.... i don't know why.

I have the system on my Z and i've been told that by adding a crossover tube, it elimintaes alot of the brutally loud pop and crackle under part throttle accelleration.

i don't mind the noise whent he pedal is kissing the floorboard, but just cruising from 1800-2200rpm it crackles so bad that it soudns like a fleet of harley davidisons with strait pipes driving under a viaduct LOL...if you can imagine.

i know this is why the system was discontinued, and I know that all of the other Chambered systems on the market use a packing material that deadens the sound to a greater degreee but the Gardner is concours and what I want to keep on my car.

anyone have any input on this?

Thanks

Restoration / need a transverse muffler for 69 Z ,
« on: July 27, 2006, 11:19:01 AM »
i have a gardner chambered exhaust on my 69 Z and it is simply too loud, and very very restrictive.

i'm done showing the car, and want to put a 2.5 inch mandrel bend sytem on it, but want the stock look of a transverse muffler behind the rear axle and the chrome tip pipes.

where can i get the correct style muffler and tail pipes? anyone know where I can get these things?

thanks

General Discussion / corvette bronze code OO in 1968..how many made?
« on: July 06, 2006, 12:50:00 AM »
i have a friend with a 68 rs/ss which is an original corvette bronze code OO car.
i understand that these are pretty rare...anyone know how many were built?

this car has a 396-325 pb/ps/ac

any ideas?

Rich,

what about when you have to replace the dash panel??  are you expecing to cut around the vin plate and section the rest of a new dash in place/?? this is neither probable or practicle.

anyone who has worked on more than 1 first gen has undoubtley seen the rot that grown under the bottom edge of the winshield.

in this instance, you are simply replacing the panel that the vin plate is rivited too...

playing devils advocate here...

if you only replace that single panel... is the car anymore valid than a car that has had every other panel replaced?

135
you hit the nail on the head with the new kits...
they fit is a joke and there is more wrong than right in my opinion...

as far as a rebody is concerned,  where is the line as to what is a rebody and what isn't a rebody?...
if all you have left by the time you replace each panel is the roof,  cowl, and firewall,... then you hardly have a body left.

and in most cases, these cars rot out right at the bottom of the winshield requiring a new dash anyway... I don't think anyone even second guesses when a vin plate has been re-installed on a new dash panel do they?

so if you replace each and every body panel, dash, including floorboards, fillers, etc. how is this not considered rebodying a car? only thing left would be the roof (unless we are talking convertible) and firewall, both of which could be replaced fairy easily if needed to be in a restoration.
