I should add that I had a pair of the 1 3/4 supercomps on the car some time ago... i seem to remember having to run a shorty plug for some reason as well...

with the Z28 headers... aside from the darn powersteering box clearance.. (which is minimal)  changing plugs is a breeze and you have no issues with plug wire contact.... in fact you can use the factory looms and all... i believe you even have clearance for the sparkplug heatshields... but i'm not 100% on that.

if the car had manual steering (which it just might get)  then the headers are a perfect fit and they hang nice and close to the floor so you have no scrapping problem like you do with the hookers.

Several reasons i wont use the supercomps

They hang too low
They interfear with the stearing linkage at one extreme

With the repop headers. You can run the factory wires and plugs with no issues. Aside from the slight clearancing of the powersteering box.   Evertlythin

General Discussion / Re: Adjusting rocker clearance on 30-30 cam.

I certainly understand "taking the slop out"  but unles i'm doing something wrong... (and i've followed John and Duke's procedure)  you can tell a difference with the .004 taken out of the lash adjustment...

unless I have my cam freakishly advanced to where it is climbing on the clearance ramps when I'm tryin to set the lash... i don't know...

i can tell you that i tried the lash adjustment in both my 69Z and my 64 L84 Fuelly ... and neither motor responded well to the tighter lash...

i'm about to break in a different cam in my Z (probably tomorrow)  it is a tight lash modern shaft... i'll probably go back tot he 30-30 if this expiremnent is a failure, but we'll see.

Thanks

ok John,
so then you are saying to lash at .026 even with true 1.5 rockers?

i have a set of Comp Roller Tips on my car... they are far superior (at least in consistency) to the factory arms.

The other thing I don't understand..... if you tighten the lash from .030 to .026  you notice a difference in the way the car idles, and revs... and it makes slightly less vaccuum.
less rocker noise obviously... but if all you are doing is taking the slop out (before the lifter even moves the valve) ... why then do you notice a difference in idle quality and vaccuum with the tighter lash?

I can't believe that the .004 additional valve lift makes a difference
Thanks

here is the deal..
Chevy rockers aer supposed to be 1.5 but in actuality, they are closer to 1.37 as  John said..
the tighter lash is to compensate for the sloppiness in the OE rockers..

if you are using blueprint rockers or aftermarket rockers with true 1.5 or higher ratio... then you want to lash at .030

i've read somewhere that the .030 lash setting was originally supposed to be .026 but the FI 327s wouldn't make enough vaccuum to idle properly... so they opened it to .030..
whether or not this is true.. JohnZ can probably verify..

i've never had good luck lashing at .024 or .026 (or whatever the article reads)

but i've never used sloppy OE rockers either LOL.

they make little torque as it is... why would you want to make the cam feel bigger by tightening the lash??? LOL

Hi , and thanks for the info Jerry,

i called Larry's old Busness today and was quoted 1500 for the 68=69 Kustom versions and everyone is aware that they come in contact with the powersteering gearbox... how stupid..

the guy who makes them, wont modify them either..

oh well..

thanks

Aaron

well I believe Bill Thomas and Kustom made the originals... but i am sure they are long out of business...

there are a number of vendors who sell the reproductions and the cost 1700-1800 bucks... which to me is outrageous for a "replica" especially when there is really nothing special about them...

i refuse to pay 1800 for a pair of headers only to know that I have to beat the piss out of them to make them clear my powersteering box...

granted, i'm sure the orignal car that was used to mock them up didn't have P/S  but since it was indeed an option on Z28s... i believe they should fit...

they only need about 3/4 inch clearance to work correctly.

thanks

General Discussion / idiot lights with guages???? 1969
« on: April 02, 2009, 02:31:08 AM »
so if a car came with the console guage package....

did any of the idiot lights work?

i seem to recall my original 69 console guage car having the oil and low fuel light work...

the car I have now was restored by someone else and none of the idiot lights work..

can anyone help with this?

Aaron

Anyone know who is making these? i've heard that 2 or 3 people were repoping them...

anyone know who id building them?

i owned a set of the 68 "Kustom" headers, but they contacted the powersteering gearbox...

i understand that the 67 version do not, but my car is a 69 and even though these headers weren't a factory option for 69, i believe they were available "over the counter" much like the crossram...

i'd like to get another set , but want to findout if they can be built to accomodate the powersteering box..

thanks

I didn't see a classified section, so I appologize if this is in the wrong spot...

i have a mint Gardner Chambered Exhaust on my car. I bought it from Eric, had the entire system ceramic coated on the inside and outside... and only had the tail pipes polished.. becasue I like the shiny tail pipe look.
the rest of the system is satin and looks just like aluminized steel... the system has been on the car for a year... you can steelwool the ceramic to make it look new again at the joints without ruining the coating.

the ceramic coating cost about 400 bucks to do it complete.. i'll sell the system for 1300 bucks... or you can buy me the correct transverse resonator system from Gardner and when they ship that, i'll put this system in their box and ship it right to you.. if you go to Gardners website.. that is my GreenZ that is in the sound file spot.. I've purchased 2 systems from Eric over the years and he will vouch for me as a seller.

please email me for photos of the system on the car..  I'll probably be pulling it off in the next week so it will be available asap.

Thanks

is there a spot on this forum to post items for sale?
I have a practically new Gardner Chambered system that i'm going to remove and sell becasue my car is a late production 1969 Z28.

system is for a small block car obviously...

i had the entire system ceramic coated (non polished) looks exactly like aluminized steel, but will not rust or discolor..

please email me if interested, and if this is in the wrong spot, i'll be happy to move it..

thanks

Hi,

Many of you are aware that approximately April/May of 1969, all duel exhaust cars switched over to a resonator/transverse exhaust system which included chrome tail pipes.

After months of looking for an appropriate system for these cars.. I contacted Stainless Works about having one made and we are discussing the possibilities of this.

Would anyone be interested in a group buy if they were to be manufactured?

I currently have a Gardner Chambered system on my car and while I wouldn't reccommend anything else, my car really should have the Resonator/transverse system, but with the few times I drive the car a year, I don't want to put a non-stainless system on it.

After looking for months, I contacted StainlessWorks about making this system.

the system would be high quality, non-polished stainless, include resonators, transverse muffler, and chrome (or polished stainless) tips so that the system is correct for these cars but in a stainless material.

I don't know of anyone who manufactures such a system, so if it is out there, please let me know.

Anyone interested? email me at akaleniecki@gmail.com

Thanks

Originality / original exhaust size
« on: May 01, 2008, 11:49:20 AM »
Anyone know for sure the correct exhaust pipe size for Z28 cars?

i currently have a Gardner Chambered system on my car which I believe are 2 inch...... the problem is that the little locator piece (which is the small piece of pipe that holds the composite gasket in place (at the manifold)   that piece brings the ID of the pipe down to 1 3/4 before going into the headpipe... (talk about a restriction for a high winding motor)

i see that many suppliers state that there is a 2.25 system that is for SS350 and 302 Z28 cars.....

did the small block and bigblock cars really have the same diameter exhaust pipes? with just a change at the manifold?

Thanks

Aaron
