I guess this topic comes up often -  but anyone who has later model, or aftermarket heads combined with factory guages is going o run into the temp sending unit problem...

the best solution i've yet read is to use a TS76 sending unit, and then replace the resistor on the gauge with a 150ohm resistor...

anyone done this?  how accurate?   is there another solution to keeping the sending unit in the head (do not want to go 68 style as my car is a 69 and has the harness with the shorter length)

just curious.

thanks

so, its not my camaro, but my 1970 Monte Carlo -
it has its original 350/300 engine but the qjet has been replaced with a correct rebuilt unit, and the distributor, while original, has had different weights and springs installed.

the car runs quite well - but fuel economy seems worse than i'd expect 10-12mpg granny driving all the time - and wot performance isn't great.

i suspect timing issues first - and then god only knows what the internal rods/jets are in the qjet -

any recommendations on how to get this straitened out?  i could put the stock advance arms and springs back in the distributor (if I could find the right ones to order)
and start there - but i'd kinda rather pay someone who has the a/f tools to do the job corruptly and without guess work.

General Discussion / 69 gardner exhaust w/resonators and chrome tips
« on: July 03, 2010, 06:54:59 PM »
i have this system on my car, paid over 1200 for it
going to switch to chambered exhaust.

would like to sell this one... it comes with the resonators, as well as a pair of pipes to bypass the resonators if you only want the transverse muffler.

system has been on the car for about 6 months... less than 1500 miles.

asking 1k or best.  comes with all clamps and hangers... everything but the heatriser.
concours package... ceramic coated joints etc.   all the goodies.

my car is the Green Z on the Gardner website (with the video of the car running)  the system is practically perfect.. but i prefer the chambered sound.

so... i converted my 69 Z to powersteering about 2 years ago... and now want to put my 68Z repop headers back on... and the headers don't fit with the powersteering box.

the system is virtually new with less than 1000 miles on it.

i'd be willing to trade the new gearbox, pump, hoses, rag joint, and pitman arm,
for a complete (rebuilt or at least in excellent condition) manual fast ratio setup.

i would want the gearbox, pitman arm, and rag joint.

anyone?

email me at akaleniecki@gmail.com

Footnotes say work with powersteering, but that apparantly is a crock.

Does anyone have these on their car without having to have dented anything?

if you did have to "massage" them... where?

Only place I seem to remember having to do this was the pitman arm...

anyone??

22
who has first hand experience with these 1 3/4 headers on their car... apparantly some guys have horrible problems with them... i seem to recall using them several years back on another car... but my car now has the correct 302 engine mounts and the correct 302 frame standoffs...

anyone know just how these headers fit, especially with power steering?

thanks

General Discussion / 4.30 or 4.56 gear set for 3series posi carrier???
« on: August 13, 2009, 07:07:07 PM »
well, I just figured out the source of the vibration coming from the rear of my car..
turns out that the differential yoke is not spinning "true"  which means 1 of 3 things..

either the yoke is worn out of round
the pinion gear is bent
the bearings in the rear are running sloppy on one side..

i won't know for sure untill i pull the axle apart, but while it's apart, and if I do need to replace the 4.10s that are in there... i might go with 4.30 or 4.56 for a little added fun on the street.

the only question is can they be purchased in a "thick" gear for use with a 3.series posi..

i don't have the $$ to even deal with this now, but it needs to be fixed.... and I can't justify swithing posi carriers just for the sake of getting a steeper gear..

I dont' drive long distances on the Highway with the car, so i'm not worried about that.

Any ideas??

General Discussion / anyone use the HAys 85-103 clutch assy for Z28?
« on: August 06, 2009, 06:15:05 PM »
anyone use this setup? its their street/strip dia clutch with 2750 lbs holding pressure.

i tried the McLeod RST , which is a dual disk setup, but it doesn't have sring loaded hubs, and i couldn't eliminate the chatter in my car.

all the while, i thought it was the lightweight flywheel, so i put the Heavy one back in, and the problem still exists...

so i'm getting rid of this mcLeod and going with either hays or centerforce...

now the only other issue is whether or not to try the 10# flywheel again... ugh, i'd hate to put it all back together and have to pull it apart a 4th time. lOL

General Discussion / repop spiral shocks same as original GM
« on: July 23, 2009, 03:44:47 AM »
does anyone know if the repop spiral shocks are identical to theoriginal GM spirals?
when I bought my car, it had leaking original shocks on the car.. the previous owner bought NOS shocks that apparantly were junk..

i wound up selling them for peanuts and bought a set of the repops which i have yet to install... just in moving them with my hands... they vitually have no dampening.

i don't know how a shock really works.. but the KYBs i currently have on the car were very tough to compress, whereas these new spirals feel like mush.

i know that they stated that these were "show only" but jeeze... might as well not run shocks at all.

Anyone have good luck with these things?

General Discussion / Anyone run the LT1 (178) cam in their DZ302???
« on: July 17, 2009, 09:38:31 PM »
does anyone actually run the LT1 cam in the 302?

After going back and forth between day 1 and day 2  for my 1969 z... i've decided to keep it day 1 appearing..

the only thing i might consider is the slightly smaller LT1 cam as i've read that it was optimized for the logtype manifolds on these cars, whereas the 30=30 wasn't.

my car has wideratio muncie and 4.10s... but i want all the GO i can get..

i ran several Engine Analyzers programs using as accurate of info that I could find, and in every instance... when using stock heads, stock intake, and most importantly stock manifolds, with a restrictive exhaust... the LT1 showed the best torque and top HP (only beating the 30-30 by a few HP at 6500 rpm)

i've run the 30-30 enough times to know how much improved it is with headers, but i'm just not thrilled with its performance when using exhaust manifolds...

I spoke to Wayne Guinn about this about 5 months ago, and he said that the LT1 was definately the way to go, but I wondered if anyone actually had any real "behind the wheel" experience with this cam..

according to the specs, it is 242-254 on a 116... so it shares the same exhaust lobe as the 30-30 but has a smaller intake lobe and is spread out to a 116...

thoughts?

i've read the 20% more torque and only a few hp off the top.. which is exactly what EA said, but i'd like to know from anyone who actually uses the cam?

Thanks

General Discussion / 1969 steering column help
« on: June 15, 2009, 07:21:23 PM »
anyone know if the "reverse lockout" arm can be removed (without cutting) on a 1969 Column?
I'm ordering a set of Stahl headers and they say the model I want won't accomodate that arm.,
So either I cut it off, or figure out a way to remove it, or disengage it so that the arm can be pushed down far enough to clear the header, and still be able to turn the key off.

any help would be greatly appreciated...

General Discussion / Stahl Headers anyone? pix please?
« on: June 12, 2009, 11:46:38 PM »
So I spoke at Length with Jere Stahl today about headers for my Z>. I'm just not wiling to pop the 1500 for the repop ones, especially since they aren't correct for a 1969 no matter what...

anyway...

he states that inorder to clear with 1 3/4 tubes, I need to cut off my column reverse lockout arm... the only header they make in 1 3/4 is the new model 105.

i don't want to cut my column apart, in which he said that the old version (106) will fit w/ powersteering, but only in 1 5/8.

anyone have the 106 or 105 on their car.. and can I see a photo of how they look? and if there really is an issue with the column reverse lockout arm.

I suppose i could swap to manual steering.. but that would suck.

if necessary, i could find another column to bastardize, paint green, and install...

any help would be appreciated.

i'm trying to find the best set of 1 3/4 headers for my car, and I believe Stahl to be the ones, just don't want to have to do serious and unrepairable damage to my column to make them fit.

Thanks

i posted this in Mildmods, and only had one response, but i'm going to order my clutch and p/p today, and wanted to firm up in my mind if i'm going to go with the OE flywheel again, or get a lightweight version.

the car has a wide ratio muncie with 4.10s , 302 with the 140 cam.
i had no trouble easing away from lights with the current flywheel, but i'd like the car to rpm a little quicker and this seems the obvious way to do it, i just do not want to make it impossible to pull away with too light of a flywheel.

anyhelp would be great.

thanksd
