Originality / Re: Rally Wheel Derby Cap Differences
« on: February 02, 2013, 09:09:45 PM »
I ran an industrial manufacturing facility for 20 years, I fully understand supplier differences, and yes I had figured that the supplier changed, given that one physical mold is significantly different that the other. .
I was trying to determine when, and if any other later caps/later manufacturers had the pointed peak and also if the lines and profiles were sharper like the 3 originals.

FYI: The center caps on Shaugers 04C 13k mile SSRS 350 has the peaks on it...

Originality / Rally Wheel Derby Cap Differences
« on: February 02, 2013, 02:38:59 PM »
VIN 531196 69 Z28
I noticed that 3 of my caps are different from the 4th.
They were wrapped up in old news papers with the vehicle I believe they (at least 3) were the originals. The car was run into a ditch before being parked, therefore a reasonable assumption would be the odd one is the replacement (it also has Canada inside).

The center of the 3 have a peak/point, which can be felt with the tip of your finger.
The odd one is rounded, the reflection shows the difference well however it is very easy to feel.

Note in the reflection how there is a distinct angle

Note in the reflection how it appears as an Arc vs an Angle

So a decent price for the smog system would be in the $500 ball park, maybe a little more? What would be a better area for him to put it towards his car, or since you don;t know his and your trying to make yours more correct what would you put $500 towards?
I about choked... give me every one you can get your hands on at $500... I've got 500k to invest

General Discussion / Re: L89 Camaro At Mecum, Not So....
« on: January 27, 2013, 09:47:08 PM »
I would be surprised if Mecum wrote any ad copy with respect to how a particular car may or may not be equipped.
Auction companies don't incur liability nor should they when it comes to whether or not a car is what the seller states, that is for the buyer to determine.

The problem could arise when/if the auction company is alerted to a suspected fraud and they do nothing with-in their power to correct or advise potential bidders of said potential fraud, such as add a disclaimer or to place conditions on the sale or etc, then there could possibly be grounds on which a lawyer may base their case. If however an auction company pulled a listing or even TAINTED a car which could not be disproven, then the auction company could end up being liable for seller's TIME, SHIPPING, REPUTATION, ETC.

What happens when/if someone doesn't like the fact that the car you are selling is nicer that the one they are selling and cries wolf and it ends up costing many people TONS of $$$.
Is the wolf crier liable?
Should they be?

Studying the what if's for each party involved reveals the answer is not so simple.

Restoration / Re: '69 z/28 ENGINE LIFT BRACKETS
« on: January 26, 2013, 07:04:32 PM »
My group at the Chevrolet Pilot Line developed the new assembly plant engine hooks and lifting brackets for all GM car lines in 1967 for the 1968-69 model years. Prior to 1968, engines were carried by the exhaust manifolds - left side of the photo below shows how many hooks a plant needed to carry C-B-O-P engines in 1967, and the right side shows the only two hooks necessary in 1968.  :)

That is almost humorous as it is unbelievable to anyone introduced into manufacturing from the 1990's forward, I can't imagine how many man hours were exerted towards the switching of these... man hours which could have been building vehicles... wow!

It appears the exhaust is painted on both sides on the turn downs so as not to show behind the wheel in the wheel house...

Photos like this are invaluable to those of us trying to replicate assembly line authentic finishes and assemblies during our restorations.
The understanding JOHNZ has brought with the research report from sheet metal to drive off is irreplaceable to any restorer of first gens, this is why I was questioning JOHN as to the differences in the processes between the two plants. I also restore Pontiacs so any information as to how things arrived/were done within that division helps me as well.

Understanding assembly lines helps immensely when putting assemblies into cars, if done how the factory originally did it, the restorations go together correctly the first time, rather than assembling then disassembling in order to install an assembly which should have already been in place.

That is a good looking 69 Bird... Red with Redlines.
I see the Pontiac Axles did not have the backing plates in place when the rear ends were painted... Neat difference.

Am I reading this correctly?
That you were involved in the builds of the last 69 Firebirds coming out of Lordstown?

If so I have a couple of questions as to what was different about assembly processes in Lordstown VS Norwood?

Did they have a separate Fisher Body plant as Norwood or was it more like the other GMAD plants and specifically Van Nuys?

Those are Lordstown cars correct?
Did JohnZ have anything to do with the setups there as he did with the Chevrolet F line?

My 57 Chevrolet had a 60 over 283 with Fuelie Heads and a "30/30" camshaft... same set up as my dad had in high school.
