This photo shows what looks to be either a way to manipulate the engine for painting or part of the mask for the end of the water pump and the by pass hose is this correct?

Originality / Re: N66 wheel paint colors

Kelly,
I believe you are correct as Jerry's book has SS wheels were availble from Sept. 1968 to Jan. 1969. Mine is a Nov. 1968 build that included the SS style wheels. The paint color appendix for the correct component color and plating chart in the back does not indicate the SS style wheel colors only the Rally style wheels.

Does anyone have documentation stating that they were discontinued?
The assem manual lists changes to the N66 package much later (mid summer) in production?

A friend just bought a 9B Norwood Vinyl Top Z28 which appears to have the original paint under a repaint, I am very interested to see the original stripe layout.

Does the standard procedure apply to YA SS wheels as well, were they masked/painted at the assembly plants, reason I ask is I have never see an original paint YA with anything other than gray on the reverse.

I think you're seeing Service wheels, which were painted grey so they wouldn't rust in depot storage. Wheels were jammed by the thousands herringbone-style in rail cars, and if they were final-painted at Kelsey-Hayes, they'd have been badly nicked, chipped, and scratched before they ever got to the tire mount/balance equipment. You had to be there to understand what a rail car full of wheels looked like when they opened it.

I did a little research and The NORWOOD built 69 Trans Ams survivors which have been unearthed have grey backed Ralley II's.

Please note that tonowanda built SB had the manifolds installed before painting Flint did not.
What this means is Z28's did NOT come with painted exhaust manifolds.

Actually, when I was growing up back in the 80's.. er..  70's..   well OK.    60's..  :)   I DID hear stories about 4-speed transmissions being lifted from cars on freight trains, but I think a transmission would be a bit easier to thieve from a car on a train car, than an intake manifold.. Ever tried to remove your intake manifold without opening your hood??  :)    Besides WE at CRG know that the factory DID NOT install cross ram manifolds; the dealer sold them OTC, and perhaps even installed them with appropriate warnings about voiding your new car warranty?? :)

When I traveled through Ohio in the 90's I heard stories from the racers about loading down impalas with 4 spds and being chased by the railroad police...

It still has a wiper bottle bracket screw cap.... SUPER RARE!

On BB TH400's the trans VIN is just above the Engine Vin on the edge of the trans housing directly across from the Block Casting Number.
If they aren't the same then...
Unless my eyes are deceiving me I read the block VIN as 11N6xxxxx. I swear I see identical shadows/highlights where the upper tail on the 1 would be.

Wow that is one I would love to own!

There are TONS of shots of the Penkse Camaros and a few of an AMC garage area with the Red white and blue cars being assembled. Many Corvettes at the Daytona endurance races, The DX 67 L88 which is Dana Chevrolet's race car I believe (which would be the one which broke the wrist pin during the 24hrs of Lemans), Tony Delorenzo's/Jerry Thompsons's 68 L88, Garners L88  - ALSO some drag racing photos of Wenzels  67 Z the 67 L78 Conv BATCAR, a couple of more 67-68 dragcars. All under this heading EXACTLY -   [[label]] (with the brackets)

Select 100 per page as there are 1700 photos under this label.

I dropped it in evaporust/safest rust remover, the plate on the top of the heater box which holds the air duct diverter is the same type finish, although most get painted or phosphated as well.
