Decoding/Numbers / Shat R Proof Front windshield with no DOT?
« on: December 04, 2013, 09:13:01 PM »

The M15 is difficult to read as it appears as a M18 except at the perfect angle.

The whole thing is double imaged on the windshield and is in a 12C 69 Big Block Conv. upon close inspection the glass doesn't appear to have been removed at any point.

Originality / Foil tape over conv pinch weld?
« on: November 17, 2013, 11:02:07 PM »
This is a 45 k mile X66 conv I am painting for a customer.
I have been photo documenting much of the dis-assembly and have found a 1" wide .005 adhesive backed foil wrapped over the pinch weld where the convertible top well trim clips attach. I do not believe the trim has ever been removed, the foil has orange overspray on it, the car had been repainted with Hugger Orange lacquer very early in it's life before being  returned to silver(wrong shade) in the 80's.

I have never seen this, however I have dealt with few original convertibles.

Originality / Rally Wheel Derby Cap Differences
« on: February 02, 2013, 02:38:59 PM »
VIN 531196 69 Z28
I noticed that 3 of my caps are different from the 4th.
They were wrapped up in old news papers with the vehicle I believe they (at least 3) were the originals. The car was run into a ditch before being parked, therefore a reasonable assumption would be the odd one is the replacement (it also has Canada inside).

The center of the 3 have a peak/point, which can be felt with the tip of your finger.
The odd one is rounded, the reflection shows the difference well however it is very easy to feel.

Restoration / Strightening and polishing stainless trim a Primer
« on: October 13, 2012, 04:57:13 PM »
If anyone is interested...

I suggest you find a few pieces of mangled trim which you do not care about to test your abilities...

1.  I use a leather bag filled with shotgun shot as a backing to tap into and various pieces of wooden dowels shaped to fit what I need, most can be pushed out with light pressure.

2. After which I use a small rubber pad with 220 to find the highs and lows, repeat above until the dents and dings are near flat,

3. Then I use a fine diamond nail file to file the minor highs and lows smooth.

3. The next step is sanding with 180 grit length wise until the finish is uniform,

4. Then using progressively finer sandpaper 220 - 320 - until I am using 400 wet I sand the surface in the same direction until the previous sanding scratches are removed.

BELOW (this is the front side of the first piece of trim shown here. Passenger side lower rear glass trim for a 69 Z28 the slight smudge horizontally across the trim in the bright area is the exact position of the pushed out dents shown in the first picture.

Here are 3 different stages.

Next is polishing on a buffing wheel with rouge.

Originality / Any Interest in Original Type Door Watershields?
« on: July 27, 2010, 02:25:52 PM »
I have the originals off the low mile 69 Z I am restoring and the repros are nowhere close to correct. The originals are manufactured from coated brown kraft paper.
I have located a company who can coat the paper and diecut the shields, I am now trying to guage interest to figure out if this will be economically feasible, the first ones would be for 68-69 Camaro Coupes.

The price will be equal to or less than the currently available product (Mylar) which is nowhere close to correct.

I appreciate any input and or comments,

Thanks

Here is the photo of the black survivor 69 Z's cowl top Vin stamp... the clear brushed over I have been told is not original, however the clear has small chips of orange paint over white paint so I am going to have to go out on a limb and say this was applied just after the VIN was stamped on the Chevrolet side and maybe N633598 was a pace car...

OPINIONS?

Block has never been bored. The block # is 3932386. Date code: K-19-8. The engine code is: V1I21DZ. Vin is:19N548841.

Originality / Question about the rear axle hard line for the brakes
« on: May 08, 2009, 06:31:04 PM »
I have read that the hard line was installed at the assembly plant... but when?
When the axle was dressed with springs, shock plates etc the axle was upside down making it impossible to install the hard line.

The reason I ask is because on the black RS/Z survivor the line was moved around so they could put U blots on the inside positions... when it was moved you can clearly see that under the line the rear had not been painted...the line masked it...

Originality / What was used to cover the chipped paint on the VIN#?
« on: January 05, 2009, 06:53:16 AM »
Does anyone know what was brushed to protect the chipped paint where the VIN was stamped into the top of the firewall after being assigned at Chevrolet?

In the lower right of the photo you can see the VIN and something brushed over like clear or glue...

Originality / 69 12 bolt Eaton Rear Axle Assemblies
« on: January 05, 2009, 06:19:28 AM »
How complete were the Eaton 12 bolt rears when they arrived at Norwood?
Were they Drum to Drum assemblies minus the brake tubing and springs?
