General Discussion / Misc. info from another early LOS '68...
« on: March 08, 2016, 10:01:42 PM »
Have some general data and a quick question on an early ’68 LOS RS Convertible.  Ran into an acquaintance of mine last Sunday at Cars and Coffee and briefly checked out his blue/blue/white ragtop before it started raining (he’s owned it for maybe 15 years).  Noticed it was an early LOS car, 08E, body number 0043.  Scheduling sequence number was F239 I believe.  VIN was in the low 600’s.  He has three ‘68’s but I don’t think he visits this site.  One of his others is a 396 A/T with no console, and has the funny Mustang looking shifter.

When he first bought the conv., it was partially stripped (no drivetrain, etc.), but still retained some of the RS equipment.  It may be just an RS, but it supposedly has a correctly dated 12 bolt with multi-leafs (which seems a bit unusual) and a single 3/8” fuel line.

Just wondering if more accurate research or data from this car would be helpful for any reason or if it rings a bell in the registry as something of special interest?

Decoding/Numbers / Re: Z28 VIN tag for sale
« on: January 15, 2016, 07:11:15 PM »
I compared the posted Broadcast Copy to remnants from my old LA built RS Z (built a couple months later than this one) and the data seems to line up consistently.

I'm guessing the sheet and the tags all came from the same car.

Not sure where the Cowl hood info comes from, since it is an early '68 built car, but I don't know all the BC codes?  Maybe he parted the car out and it had a cowl hood on it?

Did you happen to see how far they hung below the car (or even better, perhaps a picture of below) - as compared to the bottom of the subframe?

Those look extremely nice and would be worthwhile for my next purchase/experiment.  Unfortunately, other brands I have tried in the past always seemed to end up hanging way too low.

Originality / Re: 69 Gas Caps revisited - original Cap?
« on: December 09, 2015, 01:49:35 AM »
OK Gang, here’s an observation that I haven’t seen mentioned in these gas cap discussions yet (or maybe I just missed this detail).

My ’69 Camaro AIM (UPC 8 – page B6) shows gas cap part number 3843698.  In the notes is states “10-10-68, WAS 3914863 CAP ASSY”.  With a fair amount of googling research, I see an overall consistent pattern for these numbers (but not with 100% accuracy), as follows:

3843698 / typically ROUND cap / RAISED LETTERS / ANTI-SURGE on top and VENTED on the bottom.

3914863 / typically EARED cap / RECESSED LETTERS / VENTED on top and ANTI-SURGE on the bottom (discontinued from parts books 7-71).

So the question is, was the EARED cap the first production line version, and then replaced with the ROUND version sometime after the revision noted in the AIM?  If so, then is it possibly: EARS for early cars, ROUND for later built cars, and a mixture for the in between models while they used up various inventories?

If we could validate that theory, and narrow down the time frames, I’m guessing we could have a lot of gas cap trading opportunities on hand….

Updated the list with a few more bits of info.

Also corrected my car data on the chart...  Went to the attic to look at my original gas tanks and discovered I accidentally took the round gas cap off my 02B and put it on my 10A car.  Old tanks all look the same in a dark attic.

Thanks for providing the additional info Gang.  This will be a work in progress...

I updated the list and embellished it a little.  Maybe it will show a trend after we gather enough data?

Rick,

Just so I get it right, do you mean it is a 12B 1969 Camaro body built in calendar year 1969 (versus 1968)?

There may yet be an early/late correlation to this subject, although the current data group is still way too small to tell.

I gathered the little bit of the data that was shared in this post and entered it into a spreadsheet then saved it as a jpg..  Some of the info is missing or I wasn't clear about it, and those items are highlighted in yellow.

If you throw out my car (10A '68), and if the 11C and 12B cars are from '68 (I wasn't sure), then maybe there is an early eared version versus a late round version.

More info would definitely be helpful.  It would be great if those who already posted could provide the missing pieces or identify any mistakes I made.

Hopefully my chart attachment experiment works... if not, perhaps someone could coach me on a good way to do it.  It's worth a try....

Yes, it looks like it's time for another survey...

My gas cap, which I believe to be original to my car (and is still on the car) is round, no ears, S stamp in the center, SM stamp on the bracket.

10A of '68 Norwood car.

Originality / Re: M22 Rockcrusher applications / percentages of usage
« on: September 29, 2015, 12:25:27 AM »
Thanks for the SWAG William,

That's the basic info I was looking for and roughly what I would expect for Z/28 usage vs. others.

Since only a small percentage (5%) indicates validated/known M22 usage, I realize that it's not going to be very accurate at this point in time.  Perhaps we can improve those results by conducting a survey, or creating an M22 registry, or ???  I would be willing to take on such a project, if someone else hasn't already started the efforts.  I'm pretty good with creating spreadsheets...

I know that many cars had M22's added, and some original cars no longer have them, so it would be very important to validate and document the source of info.  And they can fairly easily be faked/cloned, which wouldn't help the database.

But there are definitely documented factory equipped M22 cars out there, so it could be a worthwhile adventure.  I believe there are more people with vehicle info that would be willing to share than what is currently available in your database.  Many people don't offer info unless they are asked specifically....

So how about it, can we work with this topic a little further?

Originality / Re: Deluxe interior trunk mat part numbers?

Here's the part number on the trunk mat that came in my '69 with standard interior.  Curious how many part numbers were used?

Car hasn't been restored, but who knows if this is factory original or has been replaced.

Originality / M22 Rockcrusher applications / percentages of usage
« on: September 25, 2015, 09:03:02 PM »
Hey Gang,

I was wondering… has anyone compiled a list / spreadsheet that breaks down the known M22 rockcrusher Camaro application percentages by engine usage?  Basically, how many are associated directly to a 302, L78, L89, 427, etc.?

I believe that a specific breakdown by GM isn’t available (only the year-end production totals), but based on the many years of data gathering efforts by this awesome dedicated group of enthusiasts, perhaps someone already created a “guestimate” of percentages using known examples?

Beyond just a summary percentage, a more detailed breakdown would also be helpful:  How they were verified / source of data (such as window stickers/docs, orphan transmissions that aren’t with their cars anymore, cars that still have their original gear boxes), and even LA vs. NOR cars, etc?

This type of effort has been done before on other categories, but I can’t seem to find anything on the internet specifically covering M22’s.  My motivation for asking this is because I am one of the lucky ones with a ‘69Z that still has its born-with M22, so I"m curious as to how many (theoretically) were installed in Z's versus other applications.

So has this already been done and I just can’t find it, or is this maybe another category that possibly a “volunteer” could take on and then share the results with the community (like them cool gas tank date codes)?

General Discussion / Re: My New '68 Camaro Z/28 Butternut Yellow

Danny,

Nice collection of wheel weights...  I have a few coffee cans of those you can route through as you continue your search.

I do believe the 60's version of these wheel weights only had ounces written on both sides of the word Micro.  Such as "2.0 Micro 2.0",

Pretty sure they didn't change the numbering format to the "Ounces Micro Grams" version until the mid seventies, when the metric craze starting kicking in.

General Discussion / Re: What starting letter should my Plates have?
« on: March 07, 2015, 05:25:28 AM »
Hello Danny,
As others have stated, the plate numbers really depend on when a car was first sold or transferred into the state and not so much on when it was built.

Here's my two cents worth of black plate info and maybe a suggestion or two....

Even though the Y series plates that you have were once assigned to your car, in my recent experience it's been difficult to get DMV to work with plates that are not "clear".  It would be cool if you can them reassigned to your car, but it may be more of a challenge than you wish to deal with.

I've probably had at least 30 original local Bay area 1968 cars with W series black plates, but only a few with the X series.  There is one local 68 RS Z that was special ordered by a guy in San Rafael (through a Point Reyes dealer - Cheda Chevrolet) that was built a little later than yours and has plates with "WNA" series.  I would use that as a high letter target when choosing a set of plates if you go that direction.

It might be easier for you to get a set of clear W series plates and have then assigned to your car.  I may even have an extra set you can use...  If you do. you might also get less grief from the local "experts" who see your car with the Y series plates and tell you they are wrong (like I get on my 67 Corvette which has Y series plates).

I could probably give you some more accurate letter series suggestions based on some of my old cars, but my records are at home and I'm currently in Korea.  I'll chat with you when I get back.
BTW - any progress on your distributor?  I may need mine back some time in the next couple of months so I can get that Z fired up and dialed in.
Talk to you soon, Charlie
