Restoration / Re: inspection marks
« on: June 02, 2006, 03:20:13 AM »
Pace--I found many marks on my '68 of different colors, and I've been told they don't mean anything because GM didn't use inspection marks until the '70s--that they were simply vendor markings. I found a yellow "L" on the RS frame under the A-frame at the shock hole, a long yellow scrawled mark on the LS underside of the frame forward of the A-frame, as well as lavender and orange markings on my spindles, ball joints, tie rod ends, and drag link. I also found "68" scrawled in yellow on a brake drum. They may not mean anything, but I'm duplicating them anyway. You only get one chance to put your car back the way it was.

Restoration / Re: Removing control arm bushings

You can knock out the upper A-frame bushings with an air hammer and a blunt chisel, but the bottom ones won't budge! They need to be pressed out. A ball joint press will work. However, I'd recommend having a pro press all of the new bushings in ;). I used urethane, too, Rich. They squeak, but I'm told after a bit they'll take a set and stop. I sure hope so!

Restoration / Re: Quarter window chrome

I got a pair of ACC repros for my car. They came with the rubber glass-to-molding strips and the finish was good, but they were a tad too long and I had to bend them and elongate the screw hole  :-\. Fortunately, that is below the belt molding and weatherstrip and it won't show. I've learned if you can afford the Genuine GM part, buy it--although beware of GM NOS chrome emblems--they're poor quality compared to the better repros. Our dealership sells to Ausley's Chevelle Parts, and I've seen some pitiful GM emblems  :P. Good luck!

Originality / Re: Original inspection paint marks on underbody
« on: May 23, 2006, 04:12:56 AM »
So the early paint markings essentially meant nothing? There was no "paint code" to indentify parts or their location on the car? If I understand you correctly, the paint marks meant the components had merely passed Rockwell hardness standards and were approved for the assembly line, and were randomly marked with varying colors of paint. Thanks!

Ahhhhh  ;D  Thank you, sir! I hate to be a pain, but could you tell me why they marked the components prior to assembly? Was it for part/model identification on the assembly line or something like that? My right spindle had lavender on it, the left one had orange. Both outer tie rod ends had orange paint on them. There was an L-shaped yellow mark under the right-side upper A-frame where the jounce bumper hits, and a long, scrawled yellow grease paint mark on the bottom of the left-side frame rail forward of the spring. I'm incredibly curious about this stuff and I appreciate your time.  :) Thanks.

QQ John?
I found clearly-defined lavender and orange paint splotches on my front suspension--what do they mean if not assembly line inspection marks? I also found yellow paint marks on the bottom of the subframe and under one A-arm. I'm just curious to understand  what they represented when the car was produced. To this day GM uses lavender, green and red (among other colors) factory inspection marks. I'm simply trying to unravel the puzzle.  ::)

General Discussion / Re: Long Water Pump on 396 in '67 Camaro?
« on: May 20, 2006, 05:50:21 AM »
You'd have to change EVERYTHING in front of the harmonic balancer  :o The long water pump came out in '69, which means all the original pulleys, brackets and accesssory mounts will have to be changed. The alternator will be moved to the right side of the engine and that means major rewiring. You'd also have to change the fan shroud and fan spacer or fan. Do it right and get the short pump stuff  ;). For my part, nothing is uglier than a '67-'68 Camaro engine compartment with '69 accesssory drives. No slam on '69s  ::) Keep 'em original  :).

Looks like a '68 Chevelle light to me  ;)

Originality / Original inspection paint marks on underbody
« on: May 19, 2006, 03:25:19 AM »
Hi all  :). I'm doing a frame-off on my '68 and I soft-cleaned the front suspension and found the factory paint marks--but the rear suspension marks have been lost via rust/changed components, etc... Does anyone know what colors GM used on the rear, and on what parts? I.E. were there paint marks on the shackle nuts or spring mounting points to show they had been tightened? I've seen original orange marks on the nuts of '69 Firebird brake backing plate bolts, for example, but have no idea what my '68 would have had. Any help would be greatly appreciated  8).  Thanks, Barry

General Discussion / Re: Recommended Rear End Ratio...

I'd think with a 502 it would hardly matter :P. A little small-block needs deep gears to get the revs up, and that 502 is a torque pig! I ran mid-12s with a 400, Turbo 350 and 3:55 gears in a '68. I'd go with 3:55s  :)
