Originality / '68 firewall
« on: June 06, 2007, 03:50:33 AM »
'69CONVRAT brought to mind a question I also have--did the automatic cars not have the hole punched in the firewall for the clutch pedal cross-shaft pushrod and boot? Or was the hole there on all models and covered by a factory plate if the car was automatic? Velly intelesting.... :-*

Restoration / Shackle color
« on: January 02, 2007, 04:28:52 AM »
Tonight I started cleaning the rear suspension components on my '68. After I scraped off all the crud and rust and undercoating on a spring shackle, it appeared to have been natural steel with no protective coating at all. What's right? I've seen them zinc-plated, but never natural metal. Help!!!

Restoration / '68 rear wheel cylinders
« on: December 18, 2006, 05:47:39 AM »
Tonight as I was soft-cleaning a wheel cylinder I came across this white paint. The brake backing plate had the same color around the mounting hole, as if the cylinder had been installed with the paint wet. Is this paint or some sort of sealer? I hate to be a pain, but this thing just keeps raising questions as I roll the years back. Thanks.

Restoration / Re-created suspension marks
« on: December 09, 2006, 07:05:53 AM »
Here is a pic of the factory front suspension paint marks I found on my '68 when I took it apart. They supposedly don't mean anything, but I'm curious if anyone else has run across something like this. I carefully "soft-cleaned" everything and I know they were there.  :) I've reproduced them as closely as I could.

General Discussion / How do I post a pic?
« on: December 06, 2006, 04:35:26 AM »
I've re-created the factory front suspension markings on my '68 and would like to know if anyone else has seen anything like them, but the Help menu doesn't tell me how to add a pic. Would some kind soul help me?  :-\

Restoration / Another underbody question...
« on: December 02, 2006, 04:48:05 AM »
I've read all the links that Rich sent me and some more besides, as well as JohnZ's excellent assembly documentary post. One question remains vague--at what point were the fuel and brake hard lines put on? My AIM talks about "Body Drop" and shows all the relevant mechanical references, but it seems to jump around as far as the actual chronology of assembly. I'm debating trying to re-create a factory appearance under my car, and it would be great to know if the hard liines were already installed and subject to the body paint overspray. I guess I'm just dense or have missed something, but I haven't figured this one out yet. If the body was already painted at "body drop" then I guess there would be no overspray on the lines, shocks, etc...  Also, excellent information about the cowl blackout--I never knew there wasn't a nice, taped separation line. You guys amaze me with your knowledge and thanks for all the support!

Restoration / Correct color for '68 underbody
« on: November 24, 2006, 04:59:42 AM »
I've almost got the front-end back under my '68 :). Next comes removing the rear axle and painting the floorboards before putting the gas and brake lines back on, then sliding the 12-bolt into place so I can begin major re-assembly  ;D. I've heard the car came with black primer on the underside, red primer, semi-gloss paint..etc. I've also read that there could have been body-color overspray on whatever color might have been there after painting. I've already stripped the underside and it's primed in red, which was the factory sealer color which had black over it. What's correct to go back with? I'd sure appreciate any feedback.  ;)

General Discussion / Fish story or not???
« on: October 28, 2006, 03:51:59 AM »
Today a mechanic at our dealership told me of a red '69 Yenko Camaro on eBay. That's not so unusual, but he said the seller is claming the block is a ZL-1 casting. Now it gets better; the seller claims that GM cast FIVE special ZL-1 blocks with "Yenko" clearly visible on the block, and they were sold through Canonsburg. Being that were only 69 documented ZL-1 Camaros and 2 ZL-1 Corvettes offered for public sale, and that the COPO Yenkos were iron 427s, I find it hard to believe that GM cast 5 rare ZL-1 blocks just for Don Yenko when the REAL ZL-1s barely got through the central offfice. Am I all wet here or is this a legit claim? I went to eBay tonight and couldn't find the car the mechanic was talking about, and I call b-s. I know it's possible--I've seen the picture of the phantom black-and-gold ZL-1 that was optioned to death and built for a GM executive--but that was a GM bigwig and not a dealer. Is this a fish story, a hoax by the seller, or a legit engine?

Originality / EPDM coating
« on: September 15, 2006, 04:40:59 AM »
:o I'm curious--is the black EPDM coating (primer/sealer?) that GM uses today on components the same kind of coating that was used in '68? I hear and see endless speculation on the correct "gloss" for subframes, radiator supports, inner fenders, A-frames, rear axles, etc... NOS GM sheetmetal and many new car parts still come with this coating, and it occurs to me if select parts were EPDM coated back then, a lot of the mystery would be taken out of the correct "sheen" controversy if EPDM is in fact the same stuff from the Old Days. I know different parts have different degrees of gloss--a bumper bracket may be gloss black and a fender will be EPDM, but surely there was a pattern... Is this a valid speculation or is my logic all wet?  :P

Restoration / wring harness boot
« on: September 08, 2006, 04:06:08 AM »
:P Does anyone know of a vendor that sells the rubber boot that goes on the oil sending unit for the idiot light? No junkyards even now will let be buy just that wire and break the harness up, and I can't find a boot anywhere outside of buying a whole new harness, which  don't need.  :'( Any tips would be greatly apppreciated  8). Thanks.

Decoding/Numbers / cowl trim tag
« on: September 06, 2006, 03:49:45 AM »
??? My '68's trim tag was missing when I got the car--is there any way to trace back to GM records by the VIN and find out how it was optioned? It appears to be a base 327/210 manual transmission car with few options, but some of the things I found upon disassembly don't make sense going by the RPO codes. Would appreciate any help finding this out.  ;)

Originality / PTB stamps
« on: September 02, 2006, 03:23:20 AM »
:-\  I've seen a lot of restored '68s in magazines that have the "Paint, Trim, Body" letters stamped on the firewall above the heater core. Did all 1st-Gens have these markings? Any trace of these was long gone by the time I got my car in 1983, so I have no idea if it had them. They look trick in the pictures, and I've got old magazines from '67-'68 that show them clearly. But I also know the factory deviated on a lot of things! I've read that they all had them...the colors were different according to the assembly plant..etc. Help me, experts!  ;D

General Discussion / 1987 IROC-Z
« on: July 11, 2006, 03:50:10 AM »
Yeah, I know this is a 1st-Gen site but I'm almost desperate! Does anyone have any experience with TPI? In addition to my '68 I also have an '87 IROC, which is almost a Camaro  :-\. A couple of times lately the car has stalled on startup with the a/c on, and the Service Engine light comes on. Trying to restart the engine results in it runs for a few seconds then dies again. I can let it sit for awhile and the ECM will reset itself and the car will run fine. I've had it on a Tech 1 at the dealership and no codes come up.  It only has 64,000 miles on it and is a cherry car and optioned to death, so it's worth fixing. I know I'm sitting on a ticking Time Bomb before whatever it is that's causing this stall leaves me stranded somewhere. I'm thinking maybe the Idle Air Control valve, but I know next to nothing about TPI. The car has developed a very slight off-idle hesitation if that helps, idles high (1500 rpm) on startup, and it only does it on an extremely hot day starting the car with the engine cold and then I turn the air on (go figure! :P). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Originality / Original inspection paint marks on underbody
« on: May 19, 2006, 03:25:19 AM »
Hi all  :). I'm doing a frame-off on my '68 and I soft-cleaned the front suspension and found the factory paint marks--but the rear suspension marks have been lost via rust/changed components, etc... Does anyone know what colors GM used on the rear, and on what parts? I.E. were there paint marks on the shackle nuts or spring mounting points to show they had been tightened? I've seen original orange marks on the nuts of '69 Firebird brake backing plate bolts, for example, but have no idea what my '68 would have had. Any help would be greatly appreciated  8).  Thanks, Barry
